Chapter 373: Chapter 373 I Am The Most Suitable Person
Zhou Lin looked at her with a smirk that wasn’t quite a smile, his eyes clearly understood her thoughts, "Why draw the curtains during broad daylight? Does it pain your heart?"
Cheng Zhiwei retorted with an annoyed sneer, "What’s it to you?"
Zhou Lin took a step forward, and Cheng Zhiwei immediately stepped back, ending up against the window.
Before she could speak, Zhou Lin pinched her chin and a gentle kiss landed on the corner of her lips, then it deepened and grew more insistent.
The moment he tasted her breath, he found it hard to control himself.
His palm tightened, trapping her in his arms.
Not even giving her a chance to speak.
Cheng Zhiwei felt a mix of shame and anger, her fingers clenching his shirt until it slightly deformed.
Not to mention it was broad daylight, right beside the window, his reckless disregard for her, showed no respect at all.
Fortunately, Zhou Lin stopped before Cheng Zhiwei completely lost it.
His finger trailed over her lips, shiny with moisture.
Cheng Zhiwei’s breathing was erratic, so agitated she couldn’t speak clearly; she raised her hand and delivered a fierce slap across Zhou Lin’s face, "Zhou Lin, if you want to go crazy, go find someone else! What do you think I am, a toy for you to freely manipulate?"
Zhou Lin turned his head, not at all angry about being hit, just gripping her wrist and pulling her towards him.
"What’s the matter? Afraid He Ye will see?"
His tone was dark and menacing.
In that instant, Cheng Zhiwei saw the shadow of the past Zhou Lin on him.
She clenched her teeth, "Any normal person knows to protect their privacy."
Not daring to mention He Ye by name.
How could Zhou Lin not see her deliberate avoidance? The more she acted like this, the more it seemed she cared about He Ye, and the worse Zhou Lin felt.
"Protecting privacy?" Zhou Lin laughed loudly as if he had heard a joke, "Cheng Zhiwei, do you realize you’re actually really bad at lying?"
Cheng Zhiwei gritted her teeth, "Are you done?"
Zhou Lin’s expression suddenly softened, "Since you’ve broken up, it’s not right for him to keep waiting downstairs. Go down and make things clear to him."
"I won’t go," Cheng Zhiwei refused.
She didn’t want to see He Ye, not because she disliked him, but because she feared she might waver at the sight of him.
"If you can’t clear it up, then just stay in Yucheng," Zhou Lin let go of Cheng Zhiwei, and with his arms folded, watched her leisurely.
He was brimming with arrogant confidence.
Cheng Zhiwei was furious and couldn’t help but look out again, her gaze falling on He Ye.
The last thing he should be doing was seeking her out.
Pain and sadness filled her eyes, and Zhou Lin felt irritated just looking at her, scoffing coldly, "Do you really need to cling to such a useless guy?"
He was angry and said with a stern face, "I won’t allow my child to be around such a loser."
He had utter contempt for He Ye.
"I’ll go," Cheng Zhiwei cut Zhou Lin off coldly, her eyes sweeping coldly over his face before she turned and headed downstairs directly.
She didn’t need his threat; she had intended to go downstairs and clear things up with He Ye anyway.
She didn’t go because she wanted to avoid it.
Downstairs, He Ye sat on the bench by the flowerbed.
Having waited for Cheng Zhiwei here for several days straight, without changing clothes or washing his face, he looked disheveled and haggard.
Cheng Zhiwei felt worse the closer she got.
Only when she stood in front of him did she manage to ask expressionlessly, "What are you doing here?"
Hearing Cheng Zhiwei’s voice, He Ye leapt up, exclaiming with surprise, "Zhiwei, you finally agreed to see me."
"I made it very clear over the phone," Cheng Zhiwei said coldly, "We’re broken up."
"It’s my fault, I let you down," He Ye sincerely apologized, "I’ve thought it through, we can move to another city to start over."
"He Mingzhu has won this round, she won’t bother us again, we can start anew," He Ye spoke excitedly about the departure, "Zhiwei, if we work hard together, we can definitely do it."
"Enough, He Ye." Cheng Zhiwei sneered contemptuously, "Even if we start over, can you hold on? Do you have the ability to hold on?"
He Ye’s face slightly changed, "Zhiwei."
"What I want is a stable home, not to live by others’ looks," Cheng Zhiwei took two steps back, increasing the distance between them, "Your sister, and your mom, how overbearing they are, always wanting everything. And you, you still have to just give in."
He Ye stared at Cheng Zhiwei steadily, then suddenly pulled her into his arms, "I know you’re saying this on purpose."
A hint of pain pricked Cheng Zhiwei’s heart, and she faltered, "He Ye, stop making a scene here, we’re over."
But He Ye acted as if he didn’t hear those words, holding on without letting go, only saying softly, "I know you don’t want to drag me down."
All those hurtful words were suddenly stuck in her throat.
Cheng Zhiwei’s eyes were red, and she fought back a sob.
"I’m waiting here to tell you, I’m going back to the He family," He Ye announced with certainty.
Both knew that returning meant more than just the literal sense.
He Ye stroked her hair, as tender as ever, "I understand you, and you understand me, so don’t deliberately say those things that hurt me, Zhiwei. I will go back and talk to her, letting dad decide."
Cheng Zhiwei felt utterly bitter. He Ye was still too naïve; the He family was under He Mingzhu’s influence, and his father barely had a say.
She released He Ye’s hand and looked at him coldly, "I wasn’t speaking in anger, I was speaking the truth. He Ye, you’re too useless, you can’t protect me."
"But..."
"To be with you, to live by He Mingzhu’s whims?" Cheng Zhiwei scoffed with scorn, "You’re probably used to seeing her face by now, but I’m not, I can’t stand it."
He Ye, criticized to the core, slumped in defeat, "But I..."
Cheng Zhiwei, heart hardening, added, "Really, even if I married you, the moment she told you to divorce me, would you dare not to?"
"He Ye, you really are too useless."
Cheng Zhiwei finished speaking and turned, striding away.
She didn’t dare to look back, afraid He Ye would see her tears.
But her heart was in agony.
Without a second thought, He Ye chased after her, "Zhiwei."
"Young Master He," Zhou Lin’s figure suddenly appeared in front of He Ye, arrogantly tilting his chin up.
He Ye paused in shock, "Why are you here?"
Disbelieving, he looked past Zhou Lin’s shoulder at Cheng Zhiwei, "You two..."
Had they made up?
Zhou Lin grabbed Cheng Zhiwei’s wrist and moved forward, then wrapped his arm around her shoulder, "In her eyes, I’m the most suitable person."
"Zhiwei, you tell him," He Ye didn’t believe it.
Cheng Zhiwei clenched her hand, feeling the pressure of Zhou Lin’s hand on her shoulder, and said word by word, "Yes, we’ve made up, so could you please stop coming to see me, can you?"
