Chapter 203: Chapter 203: Only by Seeing with My Own Eyes Did I Realize How Devout She Is
"I’m not clear about the young master’s situation, but I think, once he gets a bit better, he will definitely want you to visit him," Wang Mei dared not say much, only making up a reason along the lines of Cheng Zhiwei’s words.
Cheng Zhiwei felt a bit sad, bowed her head, sighed, and said with a downcast tone, "I know, but I just want to see how he is doing now. Has Auntie mentioned that he often has nightmares?"
"It’s... it’s okay."
Cheng Zhiwei looked at Wang Mei; she felt that Wang Mei was not telling the truth, but since she was not acquainted with her, she didn’t feel it was right to probe further and thus fell silent.
After changing clothes, the two of them went downstairs together.
Downstairs, Zhou Lin was on the phone with someone, his expression somewhat gloomy.
Cheng Zhiwei lowered her head and hurried past him as if she feared his anger might spill over to her.
Zhou Lin saw her and softened his tone, then hung up the phone.
Cheng Zhiwei sat on the sofa, constrained, and as Zhou Lin approached her, she immediately moved to the side in a slightly flustered manner.
She had no memory of him, but she carried an innate fear towards him in her heart.
Zhou Lin paused in his stride; he had seen her reaction, but still chose to sit down beside her.
Instantly, Cheng Zhiwei sprang up, saying in panic, "I’ll go help Aunt Wang."
With that, she quickly ran to the kitchen.
Zhou Lin’s eyes darkened, but he did not follow her. Just then, his phone rang again. He answered with a "Hmm" and then stood up and left the house.
Cheng Zhiwei heard the sound of the door closing, and stealthily peeked out the window. Seeing his car drive away, she breathed a huge sigh of relief.
Wang Mei sighed affectionately, "Miss Zhiwei, are you very afraid of him?"
Cheng Zhiwei shook her head, then hesitated and nodded, saying troubledly, "I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s our first meeting, but I just have this feeling that he’s not a good person."
Wang Mei fell silent; for Cheng Zhiwei, Zhou Lin indeed was not a good person.
Even if forgotten, that deep-seated sensation in her bones would not be forgotten.
She then changed the subject, talking about some happy matters.
Cheng Zhiwei quickly shifted her attention.
Cheng Zhiwei ate more at dinner, and Wang Mei felt that her forgetfulness was not necessarily a bad thing, as it seemed to improve her overall state.
After dinner, Cheng Zhiwei helped clean up the kitchen and, holding her phone, said, "Aunt Wang, I’m going over to my sister’s house, thank you for the dinner."
Before Wang Mei could even attempt to stop her, Cheng Zhiwei had already run out. She chased after her, but outside the snow flew heavily, blurring one’s vision, and Cheng Zhiwei’s figure was nowhere to be seen.
She hurried back inside to grab her phone and call Zhou Lin.
Cheng Zhiwei didn’t go to find Cheng Zhiyin; instead, she took a ride out of the city and caught the last bus to Tongen Temple.
She was going to Tongen Temple to request scriptures for Zhou Lin.
Zhou Lin had been kidnapped, and it was said that he had been tortured with extremely extreme methods. He couldn’t eat or sleep and had seen countless doctors without any effect.
She had heard that the scriptures blessed by the master of Tongen Temple were highly righteous and thought they might be able to ward off all evil spirits. Therefore, she had specifically calculated a good time to make the trip to the temple to request the scriptures, hoping to bring peace to Zhou Lin.
Whether it was true or not, it was her goodwill.
After all, all treatments had been ineffective on Zhou Lin, it wouldn’t hurt to try such a mysterious remedy.
She prayed devoutly, then looked up at the endless stairs stretching above and proceeded solemnly, kneeling and bowing every three steps.
When Zhou Lin found Cheng Zhiwei an hour later, amidst the falling snow, he pulled her up abruptly, his voice colder than the winter’s snow.
"Cheng Zhiwei, what are you doing?"
He had initially thought she really went to Maple Courtyard; after a wasted trip there and having people search everywhere, he finally found her here.
Cheng Zhiwei kept walking upwards, still bowing every three steps with the devotion as if she was a disciple of the Buddha himself.
Her hair had turned into strands from the wetness, and due to the cold weather, it began to freeze and harden, while flakes of white snow accumulated on her head, making her appear as if her hair had turned white.
Just as Cheng Zhiwei was about to kneel again, Zhou Lin, no longer able to bear it, pulled her up once more, this time directly grabbing her waist and halting all her movements.
Cheng Zhiwei’s pale face flashed with anger, and she cried out furiously, "What are you doing?"
With snow and wind against him, Zhou Lin’s dark eyes focused directly on Cheng Zhiwei, emotions swirling tumultuously in his heart before he asked steadily, "What are you doing here?"
"I can’t tell you."
"If you won’t tell me, I’ll take you away," Zhou Lin threatened.
Cheng Zhiwei grew immediately angry, "How could you be like this, this has nothing to do with you."
"I mean what I say."
Cheng Zhiwei stood puffing with rage for a moment and seeing that the man truly intended to take her away, she could only whisper anxiously, "I’m seeking scriptures for Ah Lin, he... he can’t sleep, and I heard that the abbot here blessed scriptures with strong Buddha power, so I wanted to ask for a copy for him, but you mustn’t tell anyone, it’s a secret."
Zhou Lin’s heart shook, glancing at the long staircase ahead and then back at the path already taken, thinking of Cheng Zhiwei’s devotion, his Adam’s apple bobbed, and suddenly he took a long stride forward, his other hand cradling Cheng Zhiwei’s nape, pulling her tightly into his embrace.
Only by seeing with his own eyes could he understand just how pious and hardworking she was.
Cheng Zhiwei was taken aback by his sudden embrace and, upon regaining her senses, immediately struggled forcefully, "Let me go..."
Zhou Lin let go and held onto her shoulders, speaking gently yet firmly and decisively, "Cheng Zhiwei, don’t pray for him, he’s not worth it."
"Shut up," Cheng Zhiwei glared at him fiercely and turned to kneel again, "Buddha, I do not know this man, please don’t believe his words, he is worth it, he deserves it the most."
After saying that, she bowed deeply.
Then stood up and continued upwards.
The biting wind slashed against her face like knives, but Cheng Zhiwei seemed unfazed, continuing step by step, her footsteps unwavering, her faith eternal.
Zhou Lin’s heart was scorched by such stubborn actions, making it difficult to breathe.
"Cheng Zhiwei, get up," he demanded, following her with heavy steps, pulling her up once again, his fingers under her chin, scolding with a frown, "In such cold weather, are you trying to lose your life?"
Tears suddenly fell from Cheng Zhiwei’s eyes as she yelled back, "What about Ah Lin, what is he supposed to do all alone?"
In the midst of the snowstorm, the two stood in a standoff.
Taking a deep breath, the cold air invaded Cheng Zhiwei’s lungs, chilling her emotions down a few degrees, calming her slightly, "I know you care about me, but I must do this, sir, thank you for your kindness, but I still insist on reaching the top of the mountain. It’s very cold here, you should go back first."
Saying this, she turned and continued upwards.
Her coat had frozen into a heavy, hard shell in the winter wind, making each step Cheng Zhiwei took extremely difficult, yet she refused to bow her head in defeat, her gaze fixed firmly ahead.
