Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Leaving me behind alone, doesn’t your conscience hurt?
The man who had been kicked struggled to breathe and couldn’t get up; seeing this, two of his companions immediately saw red and viciously pounced over.
Zhou Lin pushed Cheng Zhiwei back towards Meng Qiancheng, "Protect her well."
He rolled up his sleeves, his face cold as ice, stoically took a blow from a stick, and ferociously slammed the attacker to the ground; his aura burst forth, exceptionally intimidating.
Four or five people circled around them.
Meng Qiancheng’s feet twitched, but then he retracted them.
Fortunately, before those people could start fighting, Secretary Zhang and a few bodyguards rushed in and quickly subdued Mother Gao and her group.
Mother Gao kept cursing Cheng Zhiyin non-stop, "Little whore, may you die a horrible death, all your Cheng family may you die a horrible death, a family of whores... wu wu wu..."
A bodyguard casually grabbed a towel and stuffed it into her mouth.
Zhou Lin moved his shoulder and arm, it seemed he had really taken a few hard hits just now.
Cheng Zhiwei’s expression was somewhat complicated, unsure whether she should step forward or not.
Cheng Zhiyin’s face was pale, she had truly been scared just now, and now regaining her composure, she hurriedly asked Cheng Zhiwei if she was hurt, and then sneakily nudged Cheng Zhiwei with her elbow, signaling her to go over to Zhou Lin’s direction.
Cheng Zhiwei hesitated, but still limped over, "How are you? Are you okay?"
She had just seen him take at least three hits, if Secretary Zhang hadn’t arrived in time with reinforcements, he would have suffered more.
Zhou Lin, his right hand hanging down and left hand on his shoulder, met Cheng Zhiwei’s worried eyes, "I’m fine", the words reached his lips but he swallowed them and decided to tell the truth.
"I don’t know if the nerves were injured, but I can’t move my arm."
Cheng Zhiwei’s complexion changed, and the awkwardness in her heart was instantly replaced by worry, "Then we must hurry to the hospital."
Zhou Lin subtly glanced at Secretary Zhang, who tacitly understood, handing the car key to Cheng Zhiwei, "Young Madam, I need to handle things here, please take Young President Zhou to the hospital for a thorough examination."
Cheng Zhiwei took it, took a deep breath to maintain her composure; no matter what, Zhou Lin had just taken a hit for her to save her, she couldn’t really turn a blind eye.
Taking Zhou Lin to the hospital was the right thing to do.
"Do you want me to help you?" Cheng Zhiwei asked softly.
Zhou Lin’s eyes flickered; he remembered how back when they first got married, Cheng Zhiwei spoke in that same gentle and sweet manner, not nearly as sharp and sarcastic as she was now.
"Okay," he whispered, nodding.
"Let me come with you as well," Meng Qiancheng walked over, took the keys from Cheng Zhiwei’s hand, his eyes cold as he silently mocked Zhou Lin’s pretense.
Zhou Lin remained unruffled and composed, stood upright, and nodded graciously, "Then thank you, Doctor Meng."
Meng Qiancheng gave him a cold glance and went out to the car.
Cheng Zhiwei and Zhou Lin followed behind.
Once inside the car, with Meng Qiancheng driving, Cheng Zhiwei initially moved towards the passenger seat but was pulled back by Zhou Lin. He looked down with his deep eyes, carrying a hint of a sneer, "After all, I was injured protecting you. If you leave me alone in the back, wouldn’t your conscience hurt?"
Cheng Zhiwei looked at his hand dangling at his side and, ultimately, not being stubborn, sat with him in the backseat.
That way, Meng Qiancheng appeared as if he were just the driver.
He glanced through the rearview mirror, met Zhou Lin’s gaze looking back at him; his expression was flat, yet on closer inspection, it was brimming with sarcasm.
Meng Qiancheng cursed inwardly and accelerated the car’s speed.
When they reached a red light, Zhou Lin said, "Please, Dr. Meng, take me to Zhang Yuanheng’s place."
Meng Qiancheng finally found an opportunity to retort, and said without courtesy, "Young President Zhou is indeed wealthy. Are you looking down on The People’s Hospital?"
Zhou Lin spoke calmly, "That’s not true at all; I have never looked down upon The People’s Hospital. It’s just that I don’t trust you, Doctor Meng. I’m afraid that after one visit to the hospital, this hand might really become useless."
Meng Qiancheng’s face darkened, and he felt an urge to pull the car over to the side of the road and abandon it.
But he thought that if he didn’t go, then it would definitely be Cheng Zhiwei who would end up taking Zhou Lin, and who knew what might happen between them then.
Therefore, he suppressed the discomfort in his heart and turned the steering wheel, "Suit yourself."
"Zhiwei, take my phone and call Zhang Yuanheng," Zhou Lin suddenly lowered his voice and turned his head towards Cheng Zhiwei.
Cheng Zhiwei nodded, reached into the pocket of his clothes, and found it empty.
"The right side," Zhou Lin reminded her as he sat up straight.
Cheng Zhiwei reached out, but couldn’t touch it, so she had to lean her entire upper body onto his chest to reach for the pocket on that side.
Zhou Lin watched her soft hair fall on his arm, his fingers twitched, and he couldn’t help but stroke it...
Suddenly, the car jerked to an abrupt stop.
The huge inertia threw Cheng Zhiwei forward, Zhou Lin’s expression changed instantly, and without caring about his immobile arm, he caught her with his left hand, holding her tightly, while bracing his right hand forward to prevent both of them from slamming into the backrest.
In a moment, his forehead was covered with sweat.
But his left hand remained steady, firmly stabilizing Cheng Zhiwei’s waist.
The inertia lasted only a moment, and the car came to a stop.
Cheng Zhiwei immediately climbed out of Zhou Lin’s arms and upon seeing his pale complexion, she realized that his hand injury must have worsened.
With no trace of discomfort in her heart, concern burst forth, "Zhou Lin, are you alright?"
Zhou Lin steadied his tone before he replied indifferently, "Don’t panic, I’m fine. The phone."
"Right, the phone." Cheng Zhiwei fumbled to take out the phone, unlocked it, and called Zhang Yuanheng.
Zhang Yuanheng asked what the situation was.
Cheng Zhiwei glanced at Zhou Lin’s pale cheeks and the sweat on his forehead, feeling a surge of guilt, and quickly explained his injury.
"Understood, I’ll be prepared; come straight here," Zhang Yuanheng instructed, "Protect his hand, make sure it doesn’t get injured again."
"Okay."
Meng Qiancheng turned around, full of anxiety, "Are you alright? Weiwei?"
Cheng Zhiwei looked outside, "What happened?"
Meng Qiancheng restarted the car, "Just now, a car suddenly changed lanes to overtake from the opposite side at a high speed. I had no choice but to brake."
Cheng Zhiwei was leaning over Zhou Lin at the time to retrieve the phone and hadn’t seen what exactly happened. Upon hearing this, she complained casually, "Really, some people drive so recklessly, don’t they see other cars coming?"
Zhou Lin tugged at his lip, suppressing the mockery deep inside, as his cold gaze fell sharply on Meng Qiancheng, as sharp as a knife.
Half an hour later, the car arrived safely at the hospital.
Cheng Zhiwei hurried out of the car, helped Zhou Lin out, and handed him over to Zhang Yuanheng, who immediately arranged for an examination.
Cheng Zhiwei and Meng Qiancheng waited outside.
Meng Qiancheng watched as the door to the examination room closed, gripped Cheng Zhiwei’s shoulder, turned her around to make sure she was unharmed, and then exhaled in relief, "It was terrifying when that car charged over; I didn’t even have time to warn you. Luckily, you’re okay."
He looked utterly worried and afraid.
