Chapter 125: Chapter 125: There Aren’t Many Who Want Cheng Zhiwei’s Life, But There Are a Few
The waiter brought over a new cup of coffee, but Meng Qiancheng only took a light sip before setting it down, revealing a faint smile, "I’ve been abroad for five or six years and still can’t get used to this stuff."
Cheng Zhiwei blinked in confusion, not understanding how the topic had suddenly shifted to coffee.
Meng Qiancheng calmly told her, "You see, I spent five or six years and still couldn’t get used to the taste of coffee, because I clearly knew I would return one day, and because I knew you don’t like this sort of drink either. I understand what kind of person you are."
"Brother Qiancheng."
"If I didn’t understand you, then I wouldn’t be worthy of you calling me brother. That day, you spoke up because you didn’t want me to be targeted by Zhou Lin, right?" Meng Qiancheng looked down at her tender profile, "I heard what you and Gao Wei talked about in the shop."
He pointed at the ceiling, "Surveillance."
Cheng Zhiwei clenched her cup tightly, feeling an embarrassing discomfort. She had spoken those heartbreaking words to try to keep Meng Qiancheng out of the affair, but it seemed she hadn’t managed to do so.
"As far as I know, even if Gao Wei has a bad relationship with your sister, it doesn’t have much to do with you. Why would he want you dead?" Meng Qiancheng worriedly analyzed, "I feel like he is targeting you on purpose."
Cheng Zhiwei took a sip of hot water, loosening her nerves a bit, "Mhm."
"Think carefully. What kind of deep hatred do you and he actually have?"
Deep hatred?
Cheng Zhiwei pondered, her expression subtly changing. If she really had to consider it, there was Xiao Ru, who was pregnant with his child. Xiao Ru’s child was gone. Could Gao Wei be seeking revenge on her for that?
But that didn’t make sense.
Gao Wei was about to receive a high promotion. Would he really care that the child’s mother was a bar girl?
"Or, you might consider whether someone behind the scenes is deliberately setting you up," Meng Qiancheng reminded her as if it were an offhand remark, "The number of people who want you dead is not many."
But there were indeed a few.
Cheng Zhiwei’s knuckles turned white. If she really connected Gao Wei and those people, they weren’t without any intersection at all. For instance, when Xiao Ru helped Bai Zhuzhu send her away, that in itself was a connection.
So was Gao Wei a person on Seo Zhenzhen’s side?
In Meng Qiancheng’s mild expression hid a ferocity that he would not let Cheng Zhiwei know, "Zhiwei, I don’t know how to tell you this, but this world is far more merciless than you think. The consideration you have, in reality, is but a trifle bestowed by others. Do you understand what I mean?"
Cheng Zhiwei looked down at the steaming water, "You mean, Zhou Lin did this?"
"I think it was either him or someone close to him, but even if it wasn’t him, but someone close to him, do you think he would seek justice for you once he found out?" Meng Qiancheng sighed deeply, his tone resolute, "He wouldn’t. Weiwei, you know that in your heart."
Cheng Zhiwei of course knew these things, her heart filled with a prickly sourness.
She couldn’t help but think of Zhou Lin’s suddenly changed attitude these past few days... Could it be that this was all his doing? To treat her kindly on one hand, and on the other, to conspire to take her life, so that if it ever came to light later, he could argue his innocence with righteousness.
Cheng Zhiwei was startled, breaking out in a cold sweat at the thought.
If that was the case, then Zhou Lin had upped his game. He was still targeting those close to him, only the means were more sophisticated now.
"Alright, don’t think too much," Meng Qiancheng said in a low, comforting voice, "I’ll find a way to deal with Gao Wei. I’ll take you home now."
Cheng Zhiwei nodded dumbly, "Okay."
Their journey home was silent.
Upon returning to Sparkling Sky City, Cheng Zhiwei walked in to find Zhou Lin there. He was wearing a black set of loungewear, his soft slippers tapping on the floor, as he just stood there watching her.
It was very strange.
Zhiwei was slightly startled before she gathered her thoughts, bent down to change her shoes, and brushed past Zhou Lin.
Her wrist was grabbed, Zhou Lin’s voice carried a hint of coldness as he asked very directly, "Don’t you have anything you want to tell me?"
Zhiwei pursed her lips tightly and looked up to meet his eyes, her gaze seemed to hold a thousand words, yet the words that came out were very calm, "No."
Her wrist was released immediately, Zhou Lin’s expression was a mix of a smile and sarcasm, with a hint of irony, "Where have you been?"
He knew, yet he asked anyway.
Zhiwei looked at the face she had admired for many years and still found pleasing to the eye even now, the words on the tip of her tongue.
She wanted to ask him if Cheng Zhiyin’s matter was his doing, if he truly wished her dead, and even more so, if she died, would he then leave everyone around her alone.
But in the end, she did not ask.
She dared not face that answer.
Even a pushover had her temper.
Her gaze lowered again, and Zhiwei’s voice was cool as she said, "Aren’t your people always following me? Surely you know who I met and everything about it?"
And she retorted just like that.
She lifted her foot, ready to head upstairs, but was pulled back once again.
"Zhiwei, I’ve told you many times not to associate with Meng Qiancheng, he is using you," Zhou Lin’s face was so dark that it seemed water might drip from it.
The nerves in her head tensed up again, pulling at her headache.
Zhiwei jerked her hand back in disorder, "If you think my seeing friends might somehow harm the Zhou Family, I will try not to go out in the future. Right now, I have a headache, I want to go rest."
That should be good enough, she was compliant enough, right?
But obviously, this was not the answer Zhou Lin wanted.
The hostility brewing in his eyes was deep and heavy, his domineering temper gradually seeping out from his bones. He mocked with a cold laugh, "He’s already offered himself on a platter; do you really intend to keep supporting him on the outside?"
A sense of dissonance crossed Zhiwei’s heart, how could Zhou Lin know?
"Every word, every sentence he says is enticing you to do something harmful to the Zhou Family. Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed his intentions," Zhou Lin’s lean lips curled into a scornful arc, his cold voice sharp as a blade, "Zhiwei, do you still believe him?"
"He is just sympathizing with me that’s why he said those words," Zhiwei’s voice was very calm, she could certainly hear the undercurrent, but she leaned more toward the belief that Meng Qiancheng empathized with her situation; besides, she believed she would do nothing to wrong the Zhou Family.
"Alright then, let me ask you this, he deliberately guided you to frame me for Cheng Zhiyin’s matter, and you come back looking like this, don’t say you didn’t believe his words." Zhou Lin paused, suppressing his temper, "Furthermore, regarding your sister’s matter, all you need to do is say the word and I could help you solve it."
But she never sought him out from the very beginning.
She would rather trust Meng Qiancheng.
Zhiwei’s mind went blank in that instant, she finally understood where that sense of dissonance in her heart came from. Everything Zhou Lin was now saying were the words spoken in private between her and Meng Qiancheng, yet Zhou Lin knew them clearly.
Terror and fear exploded in her mind, nailing Zhiwei firmly in place.
