Chapter 478: Chapter 488: Emily’s Decision

"Boss, you hit them, I’m afraid they’ll give you trouble," Martin Miller said worriedly to John Brown after the excitement.

John Brown smiled faintly and said, "Don’t worry, it’s fine. Although they have a strong background, my relationship with Lucy Campbell has always been good. If anything happens, Lucy will back me up."

"Lucy Campbell!" Everyone exclaimed. In the small place of YODC City, Lucy Campbell seemed to have a big name but didn’t come off as particularly powerful. However, in the Capital of SSUP, her influence was much greater. It could be said that apart from some advanced leaders, Lucy Campbell’s influence was definitely not less than those cabinet-level high officials, and for William Goodman and those second-generation officials and rich kids, they were not on the same level as Lucy Campbell.

"Boss, you’re so awesome, and Lucy Campbell has become your backing. Then we’re not worried. But boss, is there any story between you two? Hehe, Lucy is single now."

John Brown laughed heartily and said, "What do you think?"

Of course, the crowd didn’t believe any romantic feelings would happen between John Brown and Lucy Campbell, as her background was just too powerful. Even if John was strong, he wasn’t in the same league as her.

John Brown mentioned Lucy Campbell just to ease everyone’s worries. After saying a few casual words, he sat back down and continued drinking with everyone, while William Goodman’s gang had already left dejectedly.

Here, John Brown wasn’t worried about William Goodman calling any police to give them trouble. Not to mention, every person here was someone the police couldn’t mess with. Moreover, William Goodman and his guys were part of the Hawk Squad. If word got out they’d been beaten, they’d lose face completely, and wouldn’t use such a method to trouble John Brown and the others.

Originally, there were four girls who came along with William Goodman, three left with them, but Evelyn Wilson stayed and sat with Martin Miller.

"Hey Martin, aren’t you going to introduce us?" John Brown smiled, shifting the topic to Martin Miller.

Martin Miller’s face turned red as he looked at Evelyn Wilson and said, "This is Evelyn Wilson. I accidentally saved her during a mission once, and that’s how we got to know each other."

Evelyn Wilson seemed quite poised and said, "Yes, if it wasn’t for Martin, I would’ve been done for that time."

"Tell us more details!" The other team members started teasing. Everyone was already used to dangerous and exciting situations, but Martin Miller’s incident was obviously tinged with romance, so they naturally had to ask all about it.

Martin Miller felt a bit embarrassed, while Evelyn Wilson said, "That time I was on a cruise trip, and didn’t expect to encounter terrorists on the ship. Those terrorists were really ruthless, killing without a blink, even with just a little fuss, they’d already killed over ten people. Everyone was so scared we didn’t dare move. We were herded into a hall with several gun-toting terrorists watching us. At that time, I really thought I was done for, but then..."

Evelyn Wilson turned to look at Martin Miller, smiling slightly, and said, "Martin was beside me, taking care of me, encouraging me, and made me feel slightly calmer. Then one of the thugs pointed a gun at me and wanted to take me out. I knew this was it, my legs were going soft from fear. Just then, Martin made a move and directly subdued the thug, and then he also took out the other thugs."

Evelyn Wilson’s account was straightforward, but at that time, it was far more dangerous than she described. However, no one cared about the danger now, and everyone asked, "And then what happened?"

Evelyn Wilson glanced at Martin Miller again and laughed, "That time I hurt my foot and couldn’t walk, so Martin kept taking care of me until our ship returned to the harbor. Then he left, and that’s when I found out he was a soldier. Later, I wanted to find him and thank him, but I never saw him. I didn’t expect to meet him here today, I’m so happy."

This was also simply stated, but everyone could let their imaginations run wild. Two people going through trials together, with life-saving grace involved, typically should lead to a romantic commitment. Everyone looked at Martin Miller with a teasing glance, including John Brown. Despite having little interest in women himself now, listening to the tales of his brothers still excited him.

Martin Miller felt uncomfortable being watched by everyone, coughed dryly, and said, "Don’t look at us like that; naturally, I had to take care of Evelyn then since on that ship, she had no relatives or friends."

John Brown laughed heartily, patting Martin Miller’s shoulder, "Come on, a manly man, do you need to be shy? If you like her, go ahead and pursue it boldly. We all support you."

Martin Miller was even more embarrassed but involuntarily looked at Evelyn Wilson.

Evelyn Wilson’s pretty face also blushed slightly, meeting Martin’s gaze and smilingly said, "I can give you a chance."

Everyone immediately erupted in cheers, and Martin Miller was so excited his face turned completely red, mumbling without knowing what to say.

Seeing Martin Miller like this, John Brown couldn’t help but shake his head secretly. This tender situation is indeed a downfall for heroes. Martin used to be quite similar to everyone, indulging in many women but without emotional attachments. Now, however, he’s caught in Evelyn Wilson’s emotional web.

Yet, John Brown soon laughed at himself and thought his current headache wasn’t even about romance.

"Alright, alright, we’ve had about enough to drink for today. Time to take off, brothers," John Brown announced.

With a call from John, everyone immediately stood up to leave, and Martin Miller called out quickly, "Wait for me."

"You’re treating us, so you settle the bill," John Brown laughed aloud as he and the team members scampered away.

Martin Miller stopped in his tracks, looked at Emily Johnson, and awkwardly smiled, saying, "Those guys, they sure run fast."

Emily Johnson wasn’t foolish; she could easily see these people were giving them a chance, and she indeed had some feelings for Martin. She smiled slightly and said, "Now it’s just the two of us. Should we go somewhere else and have a nice chat?"

"Um... uh..." Martin rubbed his hands, unsure if he should agree or not.

"Hmph, are you a man or not, being so hesitant?" Emily Johnson rolled her eyes at Martin, grabbed his arm, and said, "Let’s go."

James Brown and his group were hiding to the side, watching Martin and Emily Johnson walk off together, all laughing heartily. Martin had been caught in this situation, and it would definitely become a topic for the brothers’ jokes in the future.

After drinking, James Brown took a bath outside and sobered up completely before picking up his daughter from school. He certainly didn’t want his daughter to smell the alcohol on him. This attention to detail was something he didn’t even worry about around his wife, Gina Lopez. His daughter’s influence was unmatched.

"Godfather!" Seeing James coming to pick her up, little Emily Brown joyfully hopped over. Just a day of interaction had already brought them quite close.

James immediately lifted his daughter up, saying, "Did you miss your godfather?"

"No, I didn’t."

James was instantly speechless; his daughter was too straightforward and it was quite a blow. But then again, kids speak their minds, and after just over a day together, reaching this level was already quite good.

In the car, Emily looked around and asked, "Godfather, where are my mom and dad?"

"They went on a business trip."

"Why aren’t they back yet?"

"They’ll be away for a few days and will be back soon."

The little girl immediately pouted, saying, "They’re meanies." Then she sulked and wouldn’t speak, no matter how much James tried to coax her, her little mouth stayed pouted.

His daughter’s attitude made James realize that reconnecting with her was a long and difficult process, and he needed to try even harder.

Fortunately, after getting home, with Emily Berns as her godmother and Sarah Grandy as a playmate, his daughter quickly cheered up. Kids have this trait where if something catches their attention, they quickly forget about being upset.

After dinner, James Brown was holding a comic book, telling his daughter a story. She listened intently and occasionally asked questions, which James patiently answered. Emily Berns sat by the bed watching them, her eyes filled with happiness.

This was the happy time for a family of three. After dreaming about it so many times, today it became reality. Emily Berns felt it wasn’t quite real.

At this moment, Emily Berns’ phone rang. She checked the number and went outside to answer it. James didn’t think much of it and continued telling stories to his daughter.

After a while, Emily Berns came back inside just as James finished a story for his daughter. The little girl then ran off to play with Sarah Grandy.

"There’s a party tomorrow and I’ve been invited to attend." Emily Berns sat down beside James Brown, her smile particularly sweet.

James was still lying on the bed, saying, "Is there something about this party?"

"There’s no problem, it’s just that I want to announce something at the party."

"You’re not planning to admit you have a daughter, are you?"

"Yes! That’s exactly what I want to say." Emily Berns nodded firmly, saying, "These past few years, I’ve always refused to disclose that I have a daughter, so I couldn’t be with her. It’s really unfair to her, and now that you, her father, are here, I can’t let her continue like this."

James immediately sat up, shaking his head and saying, "Not just yet."

"Why?" Emily Berns’ smile instantly froze on her face as she stared at James.
