Chapter 470: Chapter 480: Go See Daughter
"Boss, after our investigation, it’s 100% confirmed that the girl is your blood." As soon as the call connected, Martin Miller burst into laughter.
John Brown had already deduced that the girl was most likely his daughter based on the information he received from Lucy Campbell. Now, hearing Martin’s confirmation, he was no longer in doubt and asked, "How is she doing now?"
"Your daughter is currently being cared for by a young couple—the man is named John Smith, the woman is Lisa Johnson. Both are from the XM Region and studied at Capital of SSUP University of Foreign Languages. They’re a couple. After graduation, they couldn’t find jobs they liked, so they quit altogether. Now, their sole focus is looking after your daughter. Occasionally, money gets deposited into their bank account, but not often. The account numbers vary, but everything ultimately traces back to Emily Berns."
No wonder Emily has always believed John couldn’t find her daughter. This woman really has a knack for scheming, even using various means to transfer funds to the young couple. Of course, others might not trace it, but for Hawk Squad, it’s a piece of cake. However, John was no longer interested in such details and asked, "What about my daughter?"
"Our little princess is now three years and two months old. She just started kindergarten two months ago. She’s in Class Four, and her name is Emily Brown."
"What?" John was momentarily confused. Why does the daughter’s name sound similar to his?
"Haha, Emily Berns is seriously devoted to you, Boss. Only you could conquer someone as big a star as her—not only did she secretly give birth to your daughter, but she even named her Emily Brown, with ’Emily’ for ’memory’ and ’Brown’ for ’humility.’ Isn’t it obvious she’s reminiscing about you?"
This stirred upheaval in John’s heart. Naming the daughter Emily Brown certainly didn’t come off as a name born of resentment. If she hated him, she wouldn’t have chosen such a name. But he quickly negated this thought—back then, Emily Berns wouldn’t have known his name. Giving her daughter this name was simply an exceptional coincidence.
Still, whenever he thought of Emily Berns, John couldn’t shake a cautious discomfort. Why doesn’t he truly feel that she’s been good to him?
After hanging up the phone, Sarah Grandy grinned and teased John, "Uncle, are we going to pick up your daughter now?"
John nodded and said, "You heard everything."
"Yep, and I must say, Boss, you really are formidable. You have a daughter in the Capital of SSUP—could there be more elsewhere?"
John coughed lightly and replied, "There’s another one, but she hasn’t been born yet."
"Wait, seriously?" Sarah’s expression immediately soured before asking, "Is it Gina Lopez?"
"No, it’s Melody Yoody."
"Melody Yoody... oh, you mean Little Grace’s cousin?"
"Yep, that’s her. She’s pregnant now."
Sarah blinked her big, furry lashes a few times before suddenly giggling, "You say Little Grace’s cousin is your woman. So, does that mean Little Grace should call you Brother-in-law someday?"
"Well, that’s true... But..." John genuinely had no idea how to resolve his future relationship with Melody Yoody. After all, he couldn’t manage to marry Gina and then marry Melody too. Whether her family would recognize him as Brother-in-law was still a big uncertain.
But Sarah wasn’t concerned about these weighty issues. She grinned and said, "And since I’m your woman too, if Little Grace calls you Brother-in-law, then what should she call me?"
That question stumped John. In ancient times, there might have been such dilemmas, but he’d never read that kind of book. Besides, even if one existed, it likely wouldn’t have a definitive answer.
"Big Sister? That doesn’t feel right. What should she call me?" Sarah frowned, struggling over the notion.
John rapped Sarah on the head lightly and said, "Stop overthinking! I need to go see my kid."
Just then, John’s phone buzzed with a few multimedia messages. Opening them, he saw pictures of the couple, John Smith and Lisa Johnson, as well as a little girl’s photo.
"Wow! She’s so adorable! Ah, Uncle, she looks just like you!" Sarah immediately exclaimed.
Looking at the photo, John felt a surge of closeness in his heart. The girl had a little mushroom-shaped hairstyle, flawless porcelain-like cheeks, and big, shimmering eyes—eyes identical to Emily Berns. Her face and ears, however, resembled his. Without a shred of doubt, this was the daughter he shared with Emily, Emily Brown.
"Uncle, take me to see her! She’s your daughter, so she’s practically my daughter too—I’m her stepmom now. Every time I see her, I absolutely have to buy her gifts. What do you think I should get her?"
Sarah, flustered, scratched her head and spun in circles around the room.
John also snapped back to his senses. This was his precious daughter. He, as her father, couldn’t possibly meet her without bringing some presents, right?
Buying gifts was usually a trivial matter for John, but since this was for his daughter, even he couldn’t decide what to get right away. Like Sarah, he found himself nervously pacing and scratching his head.
Eventually, John resorted to asking Sarah what she liked as a child. That finally sparked an idea, and the two of them ended up buying a More Than Two Thousand Dollars doll before heading to the kindergarten together.
Arriving at the entrance, John hesitated with a bitter smile. His daughter was undoubtedly in this kindergarten; he knew her class and name. But a kindergarten wouldn’t know who he was, and there was no way they’d let him see his daughter.
The pair had no choice but to wait outside in hopes of catching a glimpse of her. Unfortunately, the children’s activity area wasn’t near the entrance, making it impossible to see anything.
Clearly, meeting his daughter here wasn’t going to happen. Even going directly to her home wouldn’t guarantee much better results. After lingering until about 4 PM, John and Sarah decided to head straight to Emily Berns’ residential complex. However, the security at the upscale complex barred their way without access cards. John then improvised, calling John Smith.
"Who’s this?" John Smith asked politely.
"Hi, Emily Berns asked me to come over with some money for you."
"Alright, I’ll come out right away."
Seeing how rarely Emily sent funds to John Smith, John surmised it must mostly be cash deliveries. He used this excuse, which John Smith believed immediately.
Soon, a young man in his twenties emerged—a tall, clean-cut guy wearing black-rimmed glasses. He stepped out and looked around cluelessly.
John had already seen photos of John Smith before, so he approached him quickly and said, "Hi, I’m Emily Berns’ new assistant."
John Smith’s face lit up in a smile and said, "Oh, hello, hello."
With this confirmation, John grew increasingly excited, though he kept his emotions in check. Smiling, he said, "Let’s head inside to chat. Emily asked me to take a few photos for her."
"Of course, of course. But the child is still at kindergarten; my wife went to pick her up. She should be back shortly."
"No worries; I’ll just wait at your place."
John Smith didn’t object and led John and Sarah back to his home.
The home was a three-bedroom unit, beautifully decorated. One glance, and it felt like stepping into a fairy-tale kingdom. Every part of it seemed tailored for a child. That wasn’t typical—normally, couples buy homes and decorate based on their own tastes, perhaps giving the child their own themed room. But this entire house revolved around the child, underscoring her extraordinary importance.
Seeing this, John felt relief. At least Emily cared deeply for their daughter and hadn’t neglected her.
In the house, only John Smith was present; his wife wasn’t home yet. Smith warmly invited John and Sarah to sit down, served them water, and then sat beside John, saying, "We’ve always treated Emily Brown well. Anything she needs, we fulfill. You can look around—the entire place is dedicated to her."
"Indeed, it’s impressive. I’ll mention that to Emily Berns later. In the meantime, can I take a look at her room?"
"Of course," John Smith agreed without hesitation, assuming that as Emily Berns’ assistant, John was there to inspect their care for Emily Brown.
Entering his daughter’s room left John speechless, and even Sarah was stunned. As a girl herself, she’d always loved decorating her own space, but this room was even more childlike. It was overflowing with toys, as if it were a miniature toy store.
John took out his phone, pretending to snap some photos, and lingered for a few moments. Finally, the door opened, and both John and Sarah’s gazes fixed on the entrance.
A young woman entered holding a little girl’s hand. The woman was fashionably dressed and seemed fairly attractive, but John barely glanced at her. His eyes were locked on the young girl with those unmistakable, Emily Berns-like eyes. This was his daughter—the child tied to him by blood.
John Smith quickly introduced them, "Honey, this is Emily Berns’ assistant, here to check on Emily Brown."
John Smith’s wife, Lisa Johnson, politely acknowledged them but grew suspicious shortly after, saying, "Assistant? Why didn’t Miss Berns come herself? She just called and said she’d be back soon. If she’s not here yet, why is her assistant here?"
John Smith mirrored his wife’s puzzled look, turning to John. But John’s gaze remained fixed on his daughter, oblivious to their exchange—and to the fact that their suspicion was mounting.
