Chapter 469: Chapter 479: Return to the Capital of SSUP
"Sorry, I’m Sarah Grandy’s high school classmate. My father is Jacob Luther, the chairman of P Region Company." John Wilson took one look at James Brown’s age, clearly an adult but not too old, and couldn’t figure out exactly who James was to Sarah. So he took the initiative to introduce himself, even name-dropping his father, as though everyone should know who his dad is.
James Brown didn’t mind if boys pursued Sarah, but John Wilson’s average looks, coupled with his tendency to flaunt his father’s status, immediately lowered his impression of him. Even if John had decent grades, such behavior wouldn’t lead to much achievement. On top of that, it was clear Sarah didn’t have feelings for him. James simply gave a faint smile and replied, "Oh, I don’t know him."
The average person, hearing this, would promptly drop the topic. But John Wilson, with an incredulous expression on his face, exclaimed, "You mean you don’t know my dad? Our family’s P Region Company ranks in the top ten in all of YODC City! It has assets worth nearly a billion USD, and my dad is even a member of the HRD Office!"
James Brown found it amusing and replied, "Still don’t know him. Anyway, you go ahead, Sarah and I need to leave."
"Um... uh... Sir, may I ask your name?" Seeing Sarah was walking away with James, apparently following his lead, John hurriedly caught up and tried to strike up a conversation with James.
Sarah had already run out of patience. "He’s my husband. Do you have some business with him?"
"H-Husband?" John Wilson’s mouth opened wide enough to fit a goose egg inside—though for most people, a chicken egg would suffice!
Seeing John’s shocked expression, Sarah felt a satisfied inner smugness. Tilting her head, she leaned against James’s shoulder and exclaimed, "Yep, he’s my husband. We’ve been living together."
John Wilson’s eyes bulged even further, almost popping out. After a moment, he stammered, "You... Sarah, how is this possible?"
Sarah blinked her eyes playfully and teased, "Why not? I’ve always had a thing for older men. Big bros fit my criteria, so I moved in with him."
John Wilson shook his head and suddenly chuckled. "Sarah, you still love joking around, don’t you? Haha, this must be your cousin, right?"
James noticed Sarah’s face immediately darken, nearly bursting into laughter himself. Sarah, however, glared and snapped, "Cousin?! No way, he’s my husband!"
At this point, John Wilson continued stubbornly with his assumptions. "Alright, fine, let’s go with that. So, Sarah and... Sarah’s ’husband,’ where are you going? Let me drive you."
"No! Who cares about your lousy car." Sarah scoffed. Her family wasn’t carless—her dad had one before, although it was only worth around twenty grand. But James used to drive cars like Porsches and Mercedes. Toward any ordinary Audi A4, which others might consider a luxury, Sarah didn’t even bat an eye.
"Sarah, I think you’ve misunderstood. While I admit I’ve always liked you, I genuinely just want to pursue you without any bad intentions. Sure, my family has money, but I’m not one of those spoiled kids. I’m not pretentious, am I? You’re about to start college soon, so you have the right and freedom to date. I don’t think your... husband would mind, would he?"
James Brown chuckled at the absurdity of John’s statement. This guy dared call him "husband" while trying to woo Sarah. While John wasn’t completely obnoxious, he certainly lacked self-awareness.
Sarah rolled her eyes at John and scorned, "Why does that matter to me? I have zero interest in you. You want to pursue me but ask my husband about it? You’ve got some nerve! If my husband wasn’t so patient, you’d have been slapped ages ago."
John’s face turned red, but he still managed to wear a sheepish smile. "Sarah, don’t be like that. Think about it—we haven’t seen each other in so long. Now that I’m back and bumped into you, it’s proof we have fate, right? Give me a chance, will you? I’m the only heir to P Region Company, and in the future, the whole company will be mine. Imagine—you’d be its lady boss."
"Are you finished?" Sarah stomped her foot and shouted, utterly exasperated by John’s shameless persistence.
"Wait, wait, don’t be mad!" John quickly waved his hands, backing off and retreating to his car. "Sarah, I like you, and I’ll definitely win your heart one day."
"You bastard!" Sarah bent down, picked up a stone, and threw it at his car.
John revved his engine, and the car surged forward, narrowly avoiding the stone’s impact. As his car sped away, his previously foolish expression clouded over with malignancy. A cruel glint flashed in his eyes as he coldly muttered, "Stupid girl. If I’ve set my sights on you, consider yourself lucky. Play hard to get, will you? My chosen woman won’t escape me."
Despite his earlier foolishness, John now revealed a sinister side. For someone his age, his ability to conceal such calculating thoughts marked him exceptional. Even adults with a lifetime of experience might struggle to match his level of scheming.
As John drove away, James burst into laughter. Sarah gave him a scolding look and sulked, "What are you laughing about? Someone’s chasing after your wife, and here you are laughing."
"Haha, I just think that guy’s pretty entertaining."
"Entertaining, my ass! He’s insufferable. Next time you see him, chase him off, will you? He’s driving me nuts. Hmph! Don’t think I don’t know what’s going through your head. You probably imagine someone will manage to win me over, so you can get rid of me. Dream on! Even if they offered mountains of gold, or looked better than A-list stars, I still wouldn’t want them. I only want you, Big Bro."
"What nonsense—you know I treasure you. How could I not understand?" James laughed as he hugged Sarah’s shoulders. "Alright, let’s go. We’ll shop for some things today, and in a few days, we can go on a trip."
Hearing this, Sarah brightened up instantly, grabbing James’s arm and urging him to hurry along.
"Big Bro, are you hiding something from me?" After buying a few things, Sarah tilted her head and pouted at James.
"No... no," James replied unconvincingly.
"Big Bro, I won’t force you. If you’re reluctant, we can just go home or do whatever you feel like, okay?"
"Sarah..." James hesitated before saying, "I’d like to go to the Capital of SSUP."
"Huh? What for? And how long will you stay?" Sarah immediately grabbed his arm, her face full of anxious concern.
James sighed wryly, "Actually, never mind."
Sarah pouted, showing understanding. "If you really want to go, Big Bro, you should. I know you’re worried about me feeling bad and being upset while you’re away, but I’m tougher than you think."
"Alright, quit pretending. What if I bring you with me—would you like that?" James asked, patting her shoulder. He still intended to go meet his daughter, and bringing Sarah along wouldn’t be a problem.
Sarah’s eyes lit up instantly. "Yes! Yes! Why didn’t you say so earlier? I was afraid you’d leave me home alone."
"Haha... If I really left you alone, you’d probably cry every day at home," James teased as he gently pinched Sarah’s nose.
"I... definitely would!" Sarah giggled mischievously.
By the next morning, James and Sarah were already on the grounds of the Capital of SSUP. Sarah had visited here before, but it was with her parents on a guided tour—a rushed trip without the freedom they now had.
What excited her more was being alone with James this time. As for why they came here, she didn’t concern herself; all that mattered was being with James. Everything else was secondary.
James was intimately familiar with the capital. While not a native, his numerous missions here left him knowing the city inside out—from major streets to obscure households, he remembered every detail clearly. Despite having been gone only half a year, the place hadn’t changed much; it looked exactly as he’d left it.
Exhaling lightly, James frowned. The air quality here was noticeably worse compared to YODC City—too cloudy and stale. Although it was far more prosperous and bustling than YODC, when it came to air, the capital fell short. This was one reason James disliked being here.
He had memorized the address Lucy Campbell had given him and felt eager to visit. But he wasn’t impulsive—without clarifying the situation first, he preferred to investigate carefully to avoid embarrassment or unnecessary complications.
He first took Sarah to a hotel. Money wasn’t a concern, so they stayed in a five-star establishment and booked a single double room. After all, they shared rooms at home, so there was no need for pretense while traveling.
Once settled, James called Martin Miller for assistance. Lucy Campbell might have considerable influence, but her strength lay in her powerful background. While she was personally capable, her investigative skills paled compared to those of the Hawk Squad, especially Martin Miller.
