Chapter 441 - 448: Encounter with Emily Berns Again
Chapter 441: Chapter 448: Encounter with Emily Berns Again
Lucy Campbell walked out from next door and quickly came to Emily Lopez’s side, supporting her, and asked in surprise, "Sandra, what’s wrong?"
"Sister Emily..." Emily Lopez suddenly hugged Lucy Campbell, weakly saying, "My brother-in-law is gone..."
"Gone? Where did he go?"
"He wants to divorce my sister. Wah..." After saying this, Emily Lopez burst into tears.
Lucy Campbell patted Emily Lopez’s back, frowning slightly. She never expected that James Brown would really divorce Gina Lopez. This was indeed good news for her, but she still couldn’t figure out what was going on. It seemed that the issue with Emily Berns shouldn’t have pushed James Brown to such a decision.
After coaxing Emily Lopez into the house, Lucy Campbell saw Gina Lopez lying on the sofa, her shoulders still trembling. Although there was no sound of crying, it was clear she was still crying.
"Gina!" Lucy Campbell sat beside Gina Lopez and gently patted her shoulder.
Gina Lopez quickly sat up, her face covered with tear stains. She hurriedly grabbed a tissue to wipe them, and said dispiritedly, "Lucy, you’re here."
"Is it you who talked to James about divorce?" Lucy Campbell directly got to the point.
Gina Lopez shook her head and said, "I had the idea of having him and Emily Berns raise the child together, but James said even if he takes the child, he won’t be with Emily Berns, so I decided not to divorce him. But then he... just left."
At this point, Gina Lopez suddenly became somewhat angry, gritting her teeth as she said, "It’s clearly him who made the mistake, how can he do this, does he even care about me at all?"
Lucy Campbell frowned and said, "James is definitely not such a heartless person; there’s definitely something else going on."
"Something else?" Gina Lopez and Emily Lopez exclaimed excitedly.
Lucy Campbell nodded and said, "Definitely, think about James today. Wasn’t his reaction a bit abnormal?"
Gina Lopez thought for a moment and said, "It seems he was too calm today, as if he’d already decided to divorce me. Apart from guilt, he didn’t even try to fight for it. It’s too infuriating."
Lucy Campbell immediately said, "That’s exactly the problem. I’ve been with him these past two days, and he never showed any intention of divorcing you. He was just waiting for you to calm down before talking with you. Now that this suddenly happened, it must be because something’s wrong."
Emily Lopez then said excitedly, "Yes, yes, there must be something forcing my brother-in-law to leave home. He would never heartlessly leave us... oh, leave my sister."
With Lucy Campbell and Emily Lopez saying this, Gina Lopez’s anger towards James Brown diminished significantly. After all, being a CEO, she had strong analytical skills. Taking a deep breath, she said, "Could it be that he encountered a difficult situation and doesn’t want us involved?"
Lucy Campbell nodded and said, "That’s very likely."
"Then I’ll call him. I need to find out. If there’s a problem, I want to face it with him." Gina Lopez quickly grabbed her phone.
Lucy Campbell quickly held Gina Lopez’s hand and said, "Don’t call yet. James is a man who needs to face this alone. You especially, Gina, don’t give him pressure right now. Let’s help him secretly, without him knowing. That would be better."
Emily Lopez suddenly became excited, saying, "Yes, yes, let’s secretly help my brother-in-law. He’ll surely be happier when he comes back."
Gina Lopez hesitated for a moment and said, "Alright, let’s do that. But I wonder what exactly he’s facing."
"Leave this to me. I’ll investigate, and I should find out soon."
Lucy Campbell knew the matter James Brown encountered this time must be very troublesome and possibly very dangerous. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have acted this way. This prospect somewhat excited Lucy. She loved seeing James Brown’s masculine demeanor in solving formidable challenges.
James Brown was reluctant to leave Gina Lopez. Although they had only been married for about a month, the feeling of home was something James treasured. It was a place he looked forward to going to every day.
If Joseph hadn’t come looking for him tonight, James would definitely have discussed plans with Gina Lopez to resolve the issue. But now being with Gina not only couldn’t make her feel better, but there was also a huge chance of putting her in danger. So, James made the harsh decision to part with Gina, focusing solely on resolving the Joseph issue.
Besides Joseph, James thought of the female hitman who had tried to assassinate him that day. He still wasn’t sure if she was Joseph’s person. If someone else sought revenge, it was also extremely dangerous.
With a gentle sigh, James knew that he still couldn’t truly return to an ordinary life. Until these potential threats were eliminated, he couldn’t live peacefully without endangering those around him.
But James Brown didn’t expect that his decision had already been seen through by Lucy Campbell, who had even told Gina Lopez and Emily Lopez, the pair of sisters.
Having left home, James Brown found himself at a loss as to where to go. The former home was now occupied by Emma Campbell and Sarah Grandy. Not only did he not want to be with Gina, but he also didn’t want to be with Emma.
He didn’t drive but wandered aimlessly on the streets. Walking around the night scenes of YODC City seemed to improve his mood a bit.
A red Mazda drove past him but quickly reversed to stop beside him. As the car window rolled down, a woman wearing sunglasses appeared in James Brown’s view—it was Emily Berns.
"Hey, wandering alone on the street so late, did your wife kick you out?" Emily Berns asked with a smile, her small chin raised.
James Brown directly opened the car door and got in, saying, "Isn’t this what you like to see?"
Emily Berns, holding the steering wheel with a sideways glance at James, laughed, "This is great; you’ve finally experienced being abandoned by a woman."
James Brown smiled faintly and said, "Find a place; I want to sleep."
Emily Berns’s eyes shifted as she asked, "You’re not planning to find a place to force me to reveal the child’s whereabouts, are you?"
James Brown sneered, saying, "Hmph, do you think I’d believe you have my child? Even if you have a child, who knows who the father is? You think I’d acknowledge it just because you say so?"
Emily Berns became furious, shouting angrily, "James Brown, you bastard, it is your child. I, Emily Berns, have never been touched by any other man but you, you bastard."
"Forget it. You’re a big star. Didn’t you act in plays? Those love scenes, beds, they’re everywhere."
"Those were all body doubles. I have never done that myself!" Emily Berns gritted her teeth, glaring at James Brown.
"Oh? Really?" James Brown said with a mischievous grin.
"Bastard!" Emily Berns cursed angrily, suddenly stepping on the gas and driving the car like an arrow.
The car stopped in front of a villa in the suburbs. Emily Berns turned and glared at James Brown, shouting, "Get out."
James Brown pushed open the car door and got out. Stretching his arms and looking leisure at the surroundings, the villa wasn’t very big, with a two-story building in the center and a considerable yard with fruit trees and grass underneath. The fence was just made of a picket, giving it a relaxed feel.
"Not bad, it’s quite tasteful. Whose place is this?"
"Why do you assume it’s borrowed? Can’t it be mine?" Emily Berns stood beside James Brown, asking with a hint of annoyance.
James Brown scoffed, saying, "You have such taste?"
"You... stop underestimating me. Let me tell you, I am now someone with taste too. Haven’t you seen how people evaluate me?"
"Sorry, I don’t watch entertainment news, or TV, nor surf the internet. I really don’t know how others evaluate you. I only know how I evaluate you."
"You..." Emily Berns’s chest heaved with anger, but she quickly suppressed her temper, chuckling, "You’ve become much more eloquent over the years, haven’t you?"
"Really? How do you know I’m eloquent? Could it be that just once convinced you?"
"That’s right. Don’t you know a woman’s first time is unforgettable?"
James Brown shook his head and said, "I see you’ve changed a lot over these years."
"Oh? How have I changed?" Emily Berns flirtatiously flicked her hair.
"I wasn’t talking about your looks. I was saying your skin has gotten thicker, and you’ve become less intelligent, unable to distinguish between good and bad."
Emily Berns still wasn’t angered, gave a light laugh, and said, "Yes, of course, I had to toughen up. I even had your child. If I had a thin skin, where would I have found the courage to give birth?"
"Go ahead, give birth. I haven’t seen or felt anything," James Brown said, looking indifferent.
Emily Berns laughed, saying, "You can’t numb me like this. Unless you satisfy me, don’t even think about seeing your child."
"Alright, have it your way. It’s not like I can’t reproduce; I’ll find another woman to give me a child."
Emily Berns scoffed, saying, "Your wife kicked you out, who else would have your child, dream on."
"With me, James Brown, as long as I want children, there will be plenty of women happy to give me one. And I don’t want one so soon; having a child is troublesome now. I actually felt marriage was tying me down. Now, thanks to you, I’ve escaped that nightmare."
James Brown stretched his arms, showing a light, carefree manner, having escaped a difficult situation.
Emily Berns frowned slightly. To say she truly understood James Brown would be an exaggeration. It was youthful impulsiveness back then that made her insist on having the child. Seeing James looking this way, she felt she needed to reassess him.
James Brown suddenly turned, looking lasciviously at Emily Berns, "Alright, it’s getting late. Let’s go inside to rest. Didn’t you say you like me? Tonight, let’s... rekindle old feelings. What do you say?"
