Chapter 387: Chapter 394: The Best Quality
Back at the company, John Brown first went to Gina Lopez to report in. It was almost time for work, so Gina didn’t say much and let John leave.
The afternoon was uneventful at the company, when David Clark, the chubby guy, came over to chat with John Brown for a while.
"Boss, this cigarette of yours is pretty nice, I see it’s a special tribute brand." The chubby David Clark took one cigarette from John Brown and started smoking it with enjoyment, showing no sign of formality.
"You recognize this cigarette?" John asked since not many people knew about this cigarette.
"I don’t recognize it, just feel it’s smooth, not harsh, and doesn’t leave a strong smoke odor on the body. If I could smoke these, I wouldn’t be so annoying. Boss, could you get me a couple of packs?"
"No way, not even one pack. You’re lucky to bum a couple of sticks from me once in a while."
John Brown wasn’t sure why, but he had a feeling—now that he was married to Gina, Lucy Campbell wouldn’t give him any more cigarettes. However, the idea seemed ridiculous, as if Lucy had some feelings for him and was jealous of his marriage to Gina.
But no matter what, John Brown was now reluctant to smoke this cigarette. If Lucy really stopped providing them to him, it might be a good chance to quit smoking and have a baby with Gina.
"By the way, David, where are you from? You don’t seem like a YODC City resident."
David Clark chuckled and said, "My home is in City Center."
"Isn’t development there better than here?"
"It’s boring, I don’t like it. It’s more comfortable working here, chatting with the boss every day, it’s loads of fun."
"Get off, the company pays you to work seriously. Watch out, or you’ll get fired."
David Clark giggled and said, "But I’m under the boss’s protection. How could the boss kick out his little buddy?"
John Brown couldn’t even get angry at this thick-skinned guy. Having someone to chat with every day was a pretty fun thing.
Just as they were talking, there was a knock on the door. John Brown immediately said, "Come in."
David Clark, too, quickly sat properly to the side.
The door opened, and a person in a white dress came in. David Clark’s eyes bulged out, the little flesh on his face started to tremble, making a strange sound in his throat, and his mouth gaped wide enough to fit a goose egg. A line of drool stretched from his mouth.
The only person who could make David Clark react this way was Lucy Campbell.
A couple of days ago, Lucy said she’d visit, then mentioned she had some things to handle, so she postponed. Unexpectedly, she showed up today without any prior notice.
"Hello, Manager Johnson. Is there any position available in your company? I considered it and still hope to work here." Lucy Campbell came up to John Brown, her face with a faint smile.
John Brown didn’t know what Lucy was up to, but clearly, she didn’t want others to know her identity. He quickly said, "I have to check if there’s a suitable position for you."
"There is! There is!" David Clark shouted desperately.
"What ’there is’? Get back to your work." John Brown glared at David Clark, who still didn’t bother to wipe the drool off his mouth, really embarrassing.
"Boss, we really have a position here. You must keep this lady here—let her do the same work as me."
John Brown’s face darkened, and with wide eyes, he scolded, "Get out! Isn’t it embarrassing enough for you?"
David Clark realized how he looked and yelped comically, darting out like the wind—so disgraceful in front of his private Goddess, he was utterly embarrassed.
David Clark left. John Brown closed the door and locked it to prevent interruptions, then asked Lucy Campbell, "What’s this about? Why didn’t you let me know first?"
Lucy smiled slightly, "I’m here for a job interview. How could I have you pick me up?"
"Interview? Haha, isn’t this your own company?"
"I don’t want to be the boss anymore. I want to be a little employee, just like you left the Hawk Squad to come back here to be a little manager—it’s a different life."
"You’re not serious, are you?" John Brown eyes widened.
Lucy nodded, "I am. Manager Johnson, you won’t deny me this opportunity, right?"
"Big sis, can you stop playing? This isn’t funny." John Brown rolled his eyes.
Lucy chuckled, "I’m serious, Manager Johnson. Find me a position."
"You..." John Brown finally realized Lucy wasn’t joking, so he just smiled wryly and said, "I have no idea what you’re up to, but this is your company, so it’s your call where you want to be."
Lucy smiled happily, "Then why not let me be your secretary?"
"My secretary?" Once again, John Brown’s eyes widened.
"Yes, am I not suitable?" Lucy gazed at John with a smile on her face.
John was utterly dumbfounded, took a while, then dryly laughed, "Should we discuss this with Gina?"
"Okay, let’s go."
The two left the office, and John saw that the employees in the HR department next door were all peeking over, particularly David Clark, who looked like he was love-struck.
John ignored them, but there wasn’t a lack of people poking their heads out of the office doors, all lost when they saw Lucy Campbell. John couldn’t help feeling a bit helpless. Sure, Lucy was beautiful, but was there a need for everyone to look like this?
They finally reached Gina’s office. Seeing Lucy, Gina was also pleasantly surprised and quickly led her to the sofa, even personally poured her a cup of water. It wasn’t because Gina was trying to flatter Lucy, but because Lucy appreciated her, entrusting her with such a big company, which was why Gina respected her deeply.
John sat aside, with Gina noticing his grimace. She was somewhat puzzled but didn’t ask at that moment, sitting next to Lucy and said, "Mr. Smith, why didn’t you inform me before you came?"
Lucy chuckled, "This time, I’m here to apply for a job, how could I tell you?"
"Apply?" Gina was as shocked as John had been when he heard the news. She looked at Lucy in disbelief.
"The companies I’ve been managing have all settled into a good track, so I’m pretty free. I want to live a more carefree life, but wherever I go, people recognize me, so I came to YODC City, thinking I’d be more at ease here."
Gina gave a bitter smile, "But... how can you be a little employee here?" Now she understood why John had that grimace earlier.
Lucy said, "At my own company, at least I don’t have to worry about being harassed. Besides, I plan to be John Brown’s secretary, so even when going out, safety won’t be an issue. Gina, you don’t mind, do you?"
Gina and John exchanged glances. Gina nodded, "I don’t mind."
"Thank you, Gina. But don’t worry, I won’t get involved in your work. I’ll just do my job as a secretary. You don’t have to treat me as the chairman of the company or even pretend I’m not here."
Gina smiled wryly, "That might be a bit difficult."
Lucy nodded contentedly, "That’s it. I must go. For a little employee to be meeting with the boss is a bit much. I’ll start work tomorrow, so I’ll leave for now. No need to see me off, I have people protecting me. Oh, by the way, John, it’d be best if you picked me up tomorrow. I don’t want to use those bodyguards anymore."
Gina promptly agreed, "No problem."
Lucy left. John and Gina exchanged looks, with John smiling wryly, "Honey, why did you agree? Letting her be my secretary, doesn’t it mean I’m doomed?"
Gina shrugged helplessly, "What choice do I have? Can I say no?" Then she smiled, "But I think it’s a good thing. With Mr. Smith here, you can’t laze around anymore. Even if you want to sneak off, it won’t be possible."
John sighed. Lucy becoming his secretary really was a burden. He’d have to protect her all the time for her safety.
Leaving Gina’s office, John headed back directly to his HR department. David Clark and the HR men immediately surrounded him.
"Manager Johnson, how is it? Did she get hired?"
"It wouldn’t be like last time with no hiring, huh?"
"Manager Johnson, if you don’t hire her again, we’ll all despise you," said David Clark, who only spoke so informally to John Brown.
John glared, "Just because of you guys, I certainly won’t hire her." After that, he entered the office and slammed the door shut.
Hearing the HR guys outside complaining loudly, some even cursing him secretly, John was caught between laughter and tears. Lucy really was a troublesome beauty, such a headache.
