Chapter 340: Chapter 347: Discussing the Discussion

John Brown had indulged in such absurdities before. In the past years, to rid himself of his murderous impulses, and because life was unpredictable, he acted without restraint. Yet, back then, it was only with women of easy virtue or those he’d met in bars, so he never gave it much thought.

But this time, it was Sarah Grandy and Gina Lopez here, and moreover, he had brought Sarah Grandy back mainly to avoid being alone with Gina Lopez. So, how could he possibly agree to such a preposterous suggestion?

After much persuasion, Sarah Grandy finally agreed to share a bed with Gina Lopez, while John Brown slept on the sofa.

That night, Gina Lopez slept poorly. Sarah Grandy, though asleep, occasionally jerked violently or would suddenly scream out.

Gina Lopez knew that Sarah Grandy was shocked, hence her reactions. She felt some compassion, despite having a tough night; she didn’t complain. Moreover, she suddenly realized how hard raising children could be. If it were her own child, she couldn’t imagine how worried she would be.

Not until you run a household do you understand the cost of living; not until you raise a child do you understand parental grace. Gina Lopez had never thought that having children was complicated, but she now understood a bit—having children might be easy, but raising them was the hardest part.

The next day, John Brown accompanied Sarah Grandy to the Public Security Bureau again. This time, they were not received by Helen Wilson but by the detectives since despite the case being initially cracked by Helen Wilson’s police station, it was now a criminal case and thus had been transferred here.

Sarah Grandy recounted the events of the previous day, only she described John Brown as an unacquainted person. After all, the man didn’t recognize John Brown, so it could be glossed over.

The police had also interrogated that man; his story was basically no different from Sarah Grandy’s. John Brown, in fact, also hoped to receive some other news from the police side, but since they didn’t recognize him, they naturally wouldn’t reveal anything.

John Brown had been with Sarah Grandy all along, listening clearly to her recounting these experiences.

With Sarah Grandy, he didn’t obtain any useful information. In front of Sarah Grandy, the female hitman appeared just as any ordinary woman, without showing any peculiar traits.

After finishing the statement, John Brown took Sarah Grandy to school. She originally didn’t want to go, but John Brown hoped that Sarah Grandy would interact more with her classmates to help her transition from the shock of the kidnapping.

This time Sarah Grandy did not insist. It seemed that after this incident, she was not as mischievous and was somewhat more willing to listen to John Brown.

John Brown immediately went to Helen Wilson’s police station. After a short wait, Helen Wilson came out and got into his car.

"You’re taking credit for this, and now I feel incredibly awkward," Helen Wilson complained as soon as she got into the car.

John Brown chuckled and said, "Aren’t you a cop? If I don’t give this merit to you, whom should I give it to?"

Helen Wilson glared and said, "Don’t think just because we’ve been involved and you do me some favors, that I’ll yield to you. Let me tell you, there’s no chance between us; I have someone in my heart."

"Someone in your heart?" John Brown was genuinely surprised. He had known Helen Wilson for a while, and it seemed she had never been particularly close to anyone, except perhaps him.

"Yes, that Mysterious Figure. He’s the true hero in my heart. If I were to marry, it would be him." Helen Wilson’s eyes glistened with intoxication when she mentioned the Mysterious Figure, a look she’d never had with John Brown.

John Brown suddenly felt a headache coming on and said, "If you’re going to marry him, why did you get involved with me?"

Helen Wilson turned and glanced at John Brown, saying, "I know saying this makes you uncomfortable. You men always have these double standards—you want to take advantage of women without marrying them, but when a woman has someone else in her heart, you can’t handle it."

"You haven’t answered my question yet."

"Well... it’s simple, I’ve lost my mind those days."

Helen Wilson’s response left John Brown speechless, but not angry. First, because that Mysterious Figure was himself, and second, he could see that Helen Wilson’s demeanor was heavily influenced by her personality. She didn’t want John Brown to think that their relationship had changed just because they had become intimate.

John Brown didn’t want to dwell on the issue and asked, "Helen Wilson, do you know the specific interrogation details of the case?"

"What are you trying to do?" Helen Wilson immediately looked at John Brown with suspicion.

"I feel there’s something odd about this case. The woman who escaped doesn’t seem like the type to kidnap for just a few hundred thousand; I sense she has other motives." James Brown didn’t say that his own life might have been the target, as that would have been difficult to explain if Helen Wilson pressed for details.

Helen Wilson rolled her eyes and said, "This is police business, why do you care so much?"

James Brown glared back at Helen Wilson, "After all, I did contribute to the case, didn’t I? Can’t I know a little about it?"

With a snort, Helen Wilson continued, "I was part of the interrogation yesterday. That kid spilled everything as soon as he was asked. He only knew the woman for a little over two months, and she began associating with Sarah Grandy’s father just over ten days ago. Then, they felt they could extort some money from Sarah Grandy’s father, which is why they came up with the kidnapping idea."

"What about the woman’s identity?"

Helen Wilson went on, "That kid isn’t too clear about the woman’s identity either. He said he just met her at a disco and then they got together."

James Brown frowned, what Helen Wilson mentioned didn’t seem unusual, but to him, those were almost enough clues. This woman wasn’t from around here; her coming here was purposeful, and being with that man was merely to provide a cover identity. The kidnapping of Sarah Grandy was a trap set to kill him.

If James had been slightly careless at that time, he would have really fallen for that woman’s scheme.

"What’s up? What are you thinking about?" Helen Wilson nudged James Brown when she noticed he fell silent.

James Brown shook his head, "Nothing much, I just feel that this woman is quite suspicious."

"We are trying to arrest this woman, but based on the man’s testimony, we can’t truly confirm her identity. It’s tough to catch her now."

James Brown knew that with the woman’s abilities, it was virtually impossible for the police to catch her. Moreover, if she had been hired or directed to kill him, she probably had some powerful backing. How could the police even begin to find her identity?

"Alright, if there’s nothing else, I won’t hold you up from your work."

Helen Wilson hastily opened the car door. If it weren’t for James Brown coming to see her, she wouldn’t have left her work. Just as she was about to step out, she turned back and closed the door, saying, "The money from last time hasn’t been sorted out. Are you short on cash? I still have some."

James Brown chuckled, "No need, I still have some."

Helen Wilson nodded, "Okay, that’s good. Oh, and let me remind you, don’t get any ideas about Sarah Utah. She’s my classmate, and it would be so awkward to meet if something happened."

"What’s awkward between you two?" James Brown smiled and inquired.

Helen Wilson glared at him, "Come on, if you get her in bed, wouldn’t that make our meetings awkward? Are we supposed to discuss how to sleep with you?"

James Brown laughed heartily, "That’s not a bad idea."

"Get lost!" Helen Wilson roared and then stormed out of the car. She was aware that Sarah Utah liked James Brown, but James Brown hadn’t actually done anything to Sarah Utah. With her reminder, she was just giving James a heads up. After all, a girl like Sarah Utah, with her tender feelings, would likely make any man’s heart stir.

James Brown returned to YODC City wanting to live a peaceful life, but the appearance of this hitman made it clear to him: his peaceful life was likely shattered.

Dealing with an unknown enemy also troubled James Brown a great deal. There’s an old saying that a thief cannot be on guard every day, and the best solution would be to expose this hidden enemy and deal with them. However, he was no longer a member of Hawk Squad and couldn’t mobilize their intelligence systems, so he couldn’t quickly ascertain who the person was or their motives for targeting him.

Now, the only option seemed to be to lie in wait for his enemies to strike again and then grab a live one. By interrogating that person, he might learn who was targeting him and could take targeted measures to solve this problem.

"Sigh..." James Brown exhaled softly. He wasn’t afraid of enemies seeking him out; he was confident in handling even the most formidable foes. But he was enjoying his peaceful ordinary life, and the idea of returning to a life of high alert was genuinely distressing.

Just then, Emily Lopez called him. Seeing Emily Lopez’s name on his phone, James Brown suddenly thought of a person—the foreigner he had seen at Qiao Ya’s place. Although he still hadn’t figured out who that foreigner was, could this female hitman be connected to that foreigner in some way?

Regardless of any connection, James Brown felt he should investigate that foreigner, as his presence in YODC City, along with the dangerous aura he gave off, was highly unusual.
