Chapter 318: Chapter 326: In a Sorry State
"Sunny Nguyen, although we were married for a while, that time with you was not happy for me. However, I admit that my leaving you was a wrongdoing on my part, and that’s why I said those things to you, as a way to express an apology. I wanted to give you some form of compensation, but I’ve realized that I’ve thought wrong. Compensating you would mean being unfaithful to Mary, it would be a desecration of my true love for Mary. So all I can say to you now is sorry, and that our issues should end here. From now on, you should just take care of yourself."
James Clark stood tall with his chest puffed out, speaking in a manner both exhilarating and sorrowful, exhibiting a great sense of righteousness.
Then, wrapping an arm around Mary Johnson’s shoulder, he said in a soft voice: "Mary, I’m sorry, I’ve been too kind-hearted. I always felt guilty towards her, and that’s why I acted as such. I will not do this anymore because I know doing so would be an even greater wrong to you and to your love."
Mary Johnson was the kind of woman who was simple-minded and quick-tempered. Frankly speaking, she was somewhat lacking in wits, which is why James Clark had managed to win her over so easily. Now, hearing what James Clark had said in front of Sunny, her anger towards him dissipated significantly.
However, her reduced hatred towards James Clark did not mean the same towards Sunny. In Mary’s heart, Sunny was nothing but a sly temptress. As long as Sunny was around, she posed the greatest threat to Mary. Sunny’s beauty and grace were something Mary could not match, even if she tried.
"Is that so? Then prove it to me," Mary said, glaring viciously at Sunny.
James Clark’s mouth twitched. Such a scene had happened once before. The last time, at the G Region’s corporate headquarters, Mary had made him attack Sunny, but it was thwarted by James Brown. At that time, James Clark had felt somewhat relieved; if he really were forced to hit Sunny, he would have found it difficult to bring himself to do it.
But this time it was different. If he didn’t hit Sunny now, he was surely doomed, and all his efforts would be wasted. As long as he could maintain his marriage with Mary, he could retain his current status. With that, money and prestige would be guaranteed, and getting together with a few beautiful women would be an easy affair.
James Clark gritted his teeth fiercely, pulled Mary away, and dragged the chair in front of Sunny to stand before her. However, upon meeting Sunny’s gaze, James realized it was all over between them. Last time when he went to hit Sunny, her eyes were full of humiliated tears, which showed how heartbroken she was that their marital bond had turned out this way. But this time was different; in Sunny’s eyes there was nothing but disdain, and intense scorn.
This made James Clark feel very uncomfortable deep down. After all, Sunny had once been his wife, and now she showed no affection towards him anymore. This shouldn’t be the case!
This was just how self-centered James Clark could be; after being so ruthless and heartless towards Sunny, he still wanted her to have affection for him. When a person becomes this shameless, not even a Magician could save them.
Since Sunny no longer had any feelings for him, what did he have to lose? In order to prove that he had no relationship with Sunny, he had to strike her, and this time his actions did not show the turmoil of the last time, nor did they carry the same inner struggle. Raising his arm, he aimed a blow at Sunny’s face.
Seeing James Clark’s action, Mary’s heart almost burst with joy. Her animosity towards Sunny stemmed from her knowledge that James Clark had never stopped thinking about Sunny, because of their deep past and shared marriage. She feared a rekindling of their old flame, and that’s why she was so insistent on James hitting Sunny; then Sunny would never be with James again.
The shrew has her own way of handling things, and although it’s hard to accept and anger-provoking, one cannot deny that her method was indeed effective. Regardless of Sunny already having given up on James, even if Sunny still had hopes for him, she would certainly hate him to the bone now.
She was waiting to hear the sound of James’s slap on Sunny’s face, waiting to see Sunny angry and resentful, waiting to see the bloody fingerprints on Sunny’s face. All of this excited her immensely.
The crowd around them, having listened to the noisy quarrel between James Clark and Mary Johnson, had more or less understood the situation and the relationship between the three. It turned out that Sunny was James Clark’s ex-wife, while the woman Mary was his current wife.
Everyone was truly astonished. Sunny had both beauty and a great figure, as well as a demeanor and a kind of class that were streets ahead of Mary’s. That a man like James Clark would forsake such a beautiful wife and marry a shrew like Mary was beyond comprehension.
Given a moment’s thought, most people could guess why things were this way. Nowadays, women liked to hang on to the rich, and in the same way, some wealthy women liked to keep Pretty Boys. Judging by her attire, this shrew-like woman was clearly wealthy, apparently the kind who fosters a Pretty Boy. As for James Clark, abandoning his beautiful wife, it surely wasn’t for true love; it must have been for the money.
Everyone thus felt great sympathy for Sunny Nguyen, and seeing James Clark still attempting to hit her at this moment made everyone extremely angry. Even two men couldn’t stand it and shouted loudly, "Stop!"
But after all, they were just onlookers, they could only shout out, and were not in a position to physically help. Their lack of assistance, however, did not mean Sunny would get hit. Just as James Clark’s hand was about to strike Sunny’s face, a hand suddenly reached out from behind the booth next to her and easily deflected James Clark’s arm, causing his hand to glide past Sunny’s nose, missing her face entirely.
And that wasn’t the end of it. The momentum of James Clark’s body hadn’t worn off, causing him to spin half a turn. His swinging arm couldn’t be withdrawn in time, and then there was a crisp "smack" sound of a palm striking a face, indeed the sound of a slap.
This may seem like a slow sequence, but it was actually very fast. Everyone just saw James Clark swing a slap, then seemingly turn too forcefully half a round, and then his hand landed on Mary Johnson’s face. The sound of the slap was unclear whether it was aimed at Sunny or actually hit Mary.
Sunny had thought she couldn’t avoid the slap this time, and was already heartbroken. As a weak woman, she was no match for James Clark, and getting hit seemed inevitable. However, James Clark’s slap did not touch her face, but instead hit Mary’s. And at this time, she also saw the person in the next booth - who else could it be but James Brown, smiling at her.
At that moment, Sunny suddenly felt like crying, not because of James Clark, but because James Brown appeared just in time, much like a child feeling aggrieved suddenly sees their parent.
However, Sunny held back the tears, because Mary’s scream, along with a barrage of curses, drew her attention.
"James Clark, you bastard, how dare you hit me! So it turns out you’re in cahoots with this stinker, I’ll fight you to the end."
"I... I... It wasn’t on purpose... Ouch, Mary, I really didn’t mean it, I was aiming for her, I don’t know how... Ouch, I really didn’t want to hit you," James Clark tried to explain, but Mary, furious, wouldn’t listen to his excuses at all. Her chubby hands, with their long nails, violently scratched at James Clark. In the blink of an eye, James Clark’s face was scratched to shreds.
"You didn’t mean to, I’ll show you didn’t mean to! Do you think I’m blind, or are you just stupid? You can’t hit the person in front of you, yet I’m behind you, and you can hit me? And you say you didn’t do it on purpose!" Mary cursed while relentlessly scratching at James Clark.
The onlookers, seeing the scene suddenly turn this way, laughed heartily. Unconsciously, everyone regarded these two as antagonists, and seeing such antagonists fight was naturally a delight.
Seeing the bad turn of events, James Clark knew that no explanation would suffice at this point. If this went on, he feared Mary might beat him to death, so he quickly took the opportunity to squeeze past her and started to run outside.
"Don’t run, stand right there! I’ll skin you alive," Mary shouted, chasing after him with her short legs.
"Ouch!" Mary had just run a few steps when she suddenly tripped over something and fell to the ground with a thud. Her plump body rolled on the ground like a ball a few times before coming to a stop.
"Ouch! Ouch! You’re killing me!" Mary screamed miserably, appealing to the heavens in distress. The waitstaff hurried over to help her up, but she shook off their hands, sitting on the ground crying and making a scene.
James Clark hurried back to help Mary up. At this time, Mary stopped hitting him, scolding him while hobbling outside.
Watching these two awkwardly supporting each other as they left the café, someone in the store couldn’t help but laugh out loud first, followed by the entire place erupting in laughter. An interlude like this in a café is truly rare, and most importantly, these two disliked individuals ended up with such a fate; it was indeed poetic justice.
However, no one noticed that when Mary fell, her foot had stepped on a cup. No one knew how that cup had made its way under her foot.
