Chapter 313: Chapter 321: Wine Doesn’t Intoxicate People; They Intoxicate Themselves
This stinky tofu isn’t the traditional kind; it’s actually fried tofu, and if you want the stinky version, you just brush some stinky sauce on the fried tofu.
Lucy Campbell and James Brown each bought a pack, but Lucy Campbell’s pack didn’t have any stinky sauce. She was really scared she wouldn’t be able to eat it.
Each holding a pack of fried tofu and a toothpick in their other hand, they walked down the sidewalk, eating as they went.
"This is actually pretty good." Lucy tried a piece and immediately praised it. While the fried tofu itself was just average, this was her first time eating street food while walking down the road. That experience alone was enough to make her happy, not to mention having James Brown’s company added a unique touch.
By this time, James Brown had already eaten two pieces topped with stinky sauce and smiled, "Why don’t you try this one? It tastes better than yours."
Looking at James Brown, Lucy could already smell the stinky sauce, and she couldn’t help but gently cover her nose, saying, "Can you really eat this? I..."
James Brown let out a hearty laugh, "Do I smell so bad now? Should I stand further away from you?"
"No need for that, I’m not that delicate, but the thought of getting this flavor in my mouth really stresses me out."
"Hehe, I won’t force you then, I’ll eat it myself."
As they continued walking, Lucy munched on her tofu while watching James eat his, noticing how delicious he made it seem. She couldn’t resist asking again, "Is it really that tasty?"
"It really is! There are only a few pieces left now. If you want some, now’s the time, otherwise, I’ll finish it all by myself soon."
Lucy gritted her teeth, "Then give me a small piece to try."
James Brown found Lucy’s reaction amusing and quickly speared a small piece with a toothpick. Just as he was about to lift it to her, he suddenly realized it was unhygienic to use his toothpick for her. He was about to suggest she take her own piece when Lucy had already grabbed his hand and put the piece of stinky tofu in her mouth.
Lucy was initially hesitant to try the stinky tofu; in truth, her eagerness to share more common ground and interests with James was the bigger reason she was willing to give it a go. But when she noticed James feeding her with his toothpick and sensed his moment of hesitation, she was afraid he might change his mind, which prompted her to hurriedly grab his hand and eat the tofu.
The fact that she wanted to share a toothpick with James made her naturally overlook the smell of the stinky tofu.
Lucy might seem like a woman of high status, envied and despised by countless others for her identity and wealth, but she’s also a pitiable woman in love with James, unable to express it easily, resorting to such methods to enjoy moments of closeness with him.
Once the stinky tofu was in her mouth, the stench filled it, almost causing her to spit it out immediately. But the thought of sharing a toothpick with James made her unwilling to discard even the most distasteful bite, so she stubbornly chewed twice.
After the second chew, she suddenly found the stench wasn’t unbearable anymore, and a different flavor began to emerge in her mouth. Smacking her lips, she discovered that the taste was pretty good, and after chewing it over carefully a few more times, she finally swallowed it.
"Not bad at all, it’s really tasty. I want more," said Lucy, opening her mouth to James.
James had been watching Lucy’s reactions all along, from her initial frown to a slowly relaxing forehead and finally savoring the food – now waiting with an open mouth to be fed. She looked indescribably adorable. To James, Lucy seemed like a mischievous little sister, so naturally, he picked up another piece of stinky tofu and fed it to her.
"Mmm, yummy, yummy," Lucy mumbled her praises while eating. Once she finished, she turned to James Brown, wanting more.
James continued feeding Lucy, feeling a sense of serenity in his heart, as the brooding heaviness from earlier killings now vanished cleanly away.
"Another piece," Lucy turned her head again, waiting to be fed by James.
"You ate them all," said James, showing her the empty wrapper.
Lucy pouted, "I had only a few pieces, and they’re all gone now. It’s your fault for eating too fast."
"Haha, who said you didn’t want it at the beginning."
"I don’t care, I still want more."
James laughed, "Alright then, let’s go back and buy some more."
Lucy immediately beamed with a bright smile, naturally looped her arms through James’s, and cheerfully headed back.
At this moment, James Brown didn’t feel anything inappropriate about Lucy Campbell’s arm intertwined with his. During this time, he has already regarded her as a cute little sister rather than the most beautiful woman in SSUP Country.
The two arrived at the stinky tofu stall, only to find the owner already packing up—the stinky tofu had sold out. Lucy was quite disappointed. If there was just one more packet of stinky tofu, having James feed her all the way home would have been such a blissful thing.
"Let’s go. If you want to eat, I’ll bring you back here tomorrow," James said with a chuckle, patting Lucy’s hand.
It was then Lucy reluctantly said: "You promise, then. You have to bring me here tomorrow."
"No problem, let’s go. Let’s head home for some candlelit... late-night snacks."
Lucy’s eyes lit up, "That’s right, we still have late-night snacks at home, let’s go."
The two turned around and walked back. Lucy chattered all the way, not at all her usual composed self.
Lucy had just realized something—that when she acted a bit ignorant and childish around James, he would take special care of her. It dawned on her that men have a strong desire to protect, and a woman being too strong would diminish their desire to protect, naturally creating a gap between them.
Take Emma Campbell, a girl who is like water, who James adores so much. In theory, Gina Lopez is superior to Emma in every aspect, but James just has a particular fondness for her. Lucy herself is stronger than Gina, which only increased the distance between her and James, making their time together less casual.
Now that she understood this, Lucy naturally wanted to play up her childish side. Acting childish wasn’t about being fake—it was about being willing to change for the person she liked.
Once at James’ place, Lucy sat on the sofa with her legs to the side, casually turning on the TV, saying, "I’m not very hungry right now. Can we eat later and just watch TV for a while?"
James readily agreed, sitting down next to her and lighting up a cigarette.
Lucy rarely watched TV; for news programs, she often knew more than the national broadcasters, so there was no need to watch them. For entertainment shows, she found them trivial and annoying. Watching dramas felt too lengthy and seemed a waste of time, which also took away from her own.
However, watching TV with James today made her realize these time-wasting activities could also be quite fun.
"You watch, I need to make a call," James said after a while, getting up with his phone.
"Sure, go ahead," Lucy nodded. She was well aware that James was likely going to call Emma, and although she felt somewhat bitter about it, her face didn’t show it.
James was indeed calling Emma. The way Emma treated him always left him feeling indebted to her, especially after their recent intimate encounter. He had to chat more with Emma, or else she would surely feel downcast.
Emma was thrilled to take the call, without any hint of displeasure, and probably with no one around, she shared tender words of love with James. Their call lasted for a good half-hour until Emma’s roommate returned, and only then did she hang up reluctantly.
Coming back with a smile on his face, James saw Lucy teasing, "It seems you and Emma are quite the loving couple."
James laughed it off, saying, "It’s alright."
"I’m so envious of you two. Come and watch TV with me."
It wasn’t until after ten o’clock that the two warmed up the food. Then, Lucy lit candles on the table, turned off the lights, and suddenly the room was enveloped in the hazy glow of the candles.
The flickering candlelight made Lucy’s face appear alternately illuminated and shadowed, lending her an aura of mystery.
Lucy Campbell’s beauty was too enchantingly unique. Most women have only one type of standout trait, like Emma’s soft, water-like tenderness, Emily Lopez’s playful vivacity, Gina Lopez’s noble elegance, Helen Wilson’s wild and stubborn nature. However, Lucy seemed to embody all these traits. She could perfect any one of them and combine several to create an indescribable, yet incredibly addictive quality.
At that moment, looking at James, Lucy’s gaze became infatuated. In her eyes, James was so handsome, so manly. She even wanted to throw herself into his arms and let him take liberties with her. But she knew she couldn’t do that, as it would put immense pressure on James, and it might very well turn into their last supper together.
So, raising her glass with a flirtatious smile, she said, "James, in such a romantic atmosphere, I’ll drink one on Emma’s behalf."
Hearing Lucy say this, James felt their distance significantly shrink. They clinked glasses, and he drained his in one gulp.
During the romantic candlelight dinner, with Lucy’s gentle whispers, wine so intoxicating yet without drunkenness, James found himself unwittingly drunk—not just acting, but genuinely intoxicated. If the Hawk Squad knew that less than a bottle of red wine had sent him under, they would probably laugh till their teeth fell out.
Lucy was also drunk, happily intoxicated by the atmosphere and the joy of sharing a candlelight dinner with James.
