Chapter 301: Chapter 309: Preventing Sunburn
"I don’t care, it’s your own fault for biting me." James Brown just disappeared, vanishing from Gina Lopez’s sight.
"Hey, James Brown, you can’t just leave me here alone!"
"Jerk! If you have the guts, don’t come back. If you dare come back, watch how I’ll deal with you!"
Gina Lopez called out a few times but saw no sign of James, both angry and annoyed. She didn’t know where he had run off to, probably not even hearing her words at all. All she could do was angrily grab the medicine kit, preparing to treat her foot herself.
"Huh, you’ve already fixed it for me." Gina put her injured right foot on her left knee, only to discover that the sole of her foot had already been treated. There was no bandage, just some iodine applied on the wound. But she knew her injury was not serious; it was just a puncture from something sharp followed by a scratch, and this treatment was already sufficient.
"This jerk, after treating it, he just leaves me here, that’s way too irresponsible. Whoever marries you is really unlucky for lifetimes." Gina muttered to herself, and when she looked up, she suddenly saw James Brown, which startled her. Clutching her chest, she said irritably, "Do you know it’s possible to scare someone to death? Could you make some noise next time you show up?"
James Brown had a cigarette in his mouth at that moment; he had gone back to find his smokes. He was smiling at Gina and said, "You make some sense there, so it seems you definitely won’t be the one suffering from lifetime’s misfortune."
Gina felt an anticipation in James’s eyes and felt very uncomfortable inside. Why was this guy so fond of her? To help him with that case, she almost lost herself to him, and now he could still look at her with such an expectant gaze, with a teasing tone in his voice.
Gina Lopez was not about to let James Brown have his way. With the corners of her mouth slightly upturned, she said lightly, "Sorry, meeting you was bad luck for one lifetime, knowing you was bad luck for two lifetimes. Pretending to be my boyfriend was three lifetimes of bad luck, having you work at my company was four, resigning and ending up at the same company was five, and pretending to be your wife that day made six lifetimes of bad luck. I’ve been through six lifetimes of bad luck, I’m not afraid to add a couple more."
James Brown’s eyes widened as he looked at Gina, then he gave her a thumbs up and said, "The boss is the boss, your words are really high-level, just like a tongue twister."
"Never mind whether it’s a tongue twister, just accept your fate."
James Brown chuckled and sat down next to Gina, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. Gina didn’t flinch away; such physical contact was all too common for her, not at all provoking any defensive feelings inside her. Instead, she turned her head and looked at James without any energy, asking, "What’s up?"
James Brown threw away the cigarette butt and said, "I’m ready to accept my fate and taste what it’s like to have eight lifetimes of bad luck."
Gina raised her eyebrows and said, "Alright, go ahead. Those people won’t be back for a while, and we should have enough time."
James Brown and Gina Lopez stared at each other, faces close, neither wanting to back down. But in the end, it was James Brown who gave in. When this woman became bold, she was indeed scarier than men. Besides, they had already done ’that thing’, and Gina might really not be afraid to do ’that thing’ with him again. Most importantly, Gina had said she wanted to be his girlfriend; if he did something more to Gina now, he really wouldn’t be able to get rid of her.
"Alright, you win," James Brown conceded very cleanly, letting go of Gina and lit another cigarette, blowing two smoke rings.
Gina humphed and said, "Please refrain from using such methods to scare me in the future. First, I’m not afraid of your scares, and second, if you get serious, I won’t refuse, so you’ll have no reason not to let me be your girlfriend."
James Brown shook his head slowly and said, "Yeah, I’ve realized that now, so I’ve conceded quite straightforwardly."
Gina Lopez suppressed James Brown but didn’t feel any joy because James always maintained a distance from her, treating Sarah Utah better than her.
"I’m going to sit by the sea; it’s too stuffy here." Gina pushed James Brown.
"Then go."
"My foot is injured, carry me."
"For such a small injury... do I really need to carry you?"
"Yes, you do."
After a few moments of eye contact, James Brown reluctantly carried Gina on his back, grumbling, "You’re a big boss, you should care about image a bit more, always letting me carry you. Aren’t you afraid of the employees seeing this?"
"If they see it, so what? Worst case, I’ll just admit you’re my boyfriend. What, can’t I have a boyfriend?"
"Can’t you find someone else?"
"Haven’t found anyone suitable. Maybe you can introduce someone to me?"
"Sure! I think Little Dave from our company is not bad. He’s tall, handsome, can talk well, and a lot of the girls in our company like him."
"Hmph, that guy’s already married."
"Ah, married? I really didn’t know that."
James Brown had no burden in bickering with Gina Lopez; what he feared most was when Gina became serious and earnestly discussed life and feelings with him.
Because of the receding tide, the sea had receded much from last night. James Brown took Gina quite a distance away before they reached the seaside.
But there was no fine sand beach here, and the seabed had some reefs and such, so James Brown didn’t carry Gina into the seawater.
Gina was enjoying the feeling of being on James Brown’s back, her arms wrapped around his neck, saying, "What now? We’ve got to find something fun to do. Otherwise, it’s too boring."
James Brown said grumpily, "What else do you want to do?"
"We could go fishing. That rock over there looks big enough, sitting on it and fishing must be pretty nice."
This suggestion wasn’t bad at all, and James Brown promptly agreed, "Then wait here for me, I’ll go get the fishing rods."
"Carry me back, I have to grab something else."
"Carry you again? Are you addicted to being carried?"
"You got it right." Gina Lopez admitted cheerfully, wrapping her arms tightly around James Brown’s neck as if afraid he would drop her.
"I really didn’t expect a CEO like you to play dirty. I’m seriously impressed."
Gina Lopez giggled, "I may be a CEO at the company, but I’m a woman too, right? Playing dirty is a woman’s privilege, don’t you understand?"
"I’m too lazy to debate this with you."
Gina Lopez was even happier. James Brown carried her back to fetch the fishing rods, and then the two returned to the seaside, climbed onto the large rock, and Gina Lopez eventually got off James Brown’s back.
James Brown was there baiting the hook and casting the line, while Gina Lopez applied sunscreen.
"Hey, help me with my back." Gina Lopez gave James Brown a nudge.
James Brown turned his head to look at Gina Lopez, pointing at himself, and asked, "You want me to apply sunscreen... on your back?"
Gina Lopez handed the sunscreen to James Brown, "Obviously, I can’t reach it myself. There’s only the two of us here, if you don’t do it, who will?" She then turned around, her back facing James Brown.
James Brown looked at the sunscreen in his hand, then at Gina Lopez’s back, feeling an indescribable feeling in his heart. Rationally, applying sunscreen on a beautiful woman should excite any man, but facing Gina Lopez, James Brown always felt somewhat reluctant.
"Hurry up, or I’ll get sunburned." Gina Lopez turned her head and urged James Brown.
James Brown shook his head and said, "Fine, I’ll do it."
Seeing him looking so reluctant and uneasy, she questioned, "Does it feel like such a burden to apply sunscreen for me?"
"It’s not about being burdened, it’s like a weasel paying a New Year’s visit to a chicken—there’s definitely no good intention. You aren’t planning any tricks to take advantage of me later, are you?"
"To take advantage of you, huh." Gina Lopez’s manner made James Brown a bit frustrated. Why was she always so particular about everything?
James Brown chuckled and finally poured some sunscreen into his palm, then began to apply it to Gina Lopez’s back.
James Brown has touched Gina Lopez’s skin quite a few times now, which he found quite funny in hindsight. He had no romantic feelings toward Gina Lopez, not to mention any intentions of seduction, but yet they had so many instances of physical contact, probably even more than Emma Campbell had.
Even though James Brown had no such thoughts about Gina Lopez, every time he touched her, he had to admit that her skin was incredibly smooth and soft, making applying the sunscreen a real treat.
Especially when applying it to Gina Lopez’s waist and she leaned forward, her curvy hips became more prominent, and James Brown felt an intense temptation in those light-blocking areas.
However, James Brown didn’t linger on this enjoyment, quickly finishing applying the sunscreen, and withdrew his hands.
It was then that Gina Lopez turned around, her face slightly red. James Brown was the first man she’d ever gotten close to, and with his hands, she had experienced a delightful feeling. Now having his hands moving on her back, as if electrifying her skin with every touch, that sensation spread throughout her body, making her somewhat emotional, wishing that James had done more with his hands.
But James Brown was done quickly, leaving Gina Lopez feeling a hint of disappointment, which of course, she wouldn’t dare reveal to James Brown—that would be utterly embarrassing.
"Why haven’t we caught any fish yet?" Gina Lopez deliberately changed the subject to fishing to avoid embarrassment.
"Fishing isn’t so easy. It’s a sport that truly tests one’s patience. If a fish was caught with every cast, it would lose much of its charm. The wonderful feeling of anticipation before finally catching a fish is what makes fishing delightful."
Gina Lopez smiled, "Is that so? I’m just afraid all you’ll be doing is anticipating, and in the end, still just anticipating."
James Brown lit a cigarette and said, "Don’t worry, that’s not going to happen."
Gina Lopez didn’t usually like men smoking, but watching James Brown smoke in front of her, she felt no urge to stop him, finding the faint smell of tobacco rather pleasing.
"The fish are biting!" James Brown suddenly stood up, lifting the rod, the bobber dipped, and then the fishing line tensed up, exciting Gina Lopez too, her eyes glued to the water’s surface, anticipating the moment the fish would be hauled out.
James Brown gave the rod a harsh tug, and a small fish a few inches long was reeled in. After taking it off the hook, an exhilarated Gina Lopez immediately claimed it, holding it in her hands to look at it.
But the little fish suddenly flipped its tail, bounced out of Gina Lopez’s hands, and then she shrieked, flailing her hands as her face turned pale green.
