Chapter 289: Chapter 296 Sarah Utah
The next day, James Brown arrived at the company where the buzz about Sarah Utah’s confession yesterday had not yet died down. The employees still joked about it when they saw him, and James Brown knew he owed Sarah an explanation.
As the end of the workday approached, James Brown finally called Sarah Utah. Even if he could not be with her, he couldn’t ignore her after what happened today; it would be too hurtful. More importantly, he wanted to save Sarah’s face—he didn’t want her to become the laughingstock of the company.
James Brown’s Porsche had been parked at the docks yesterday, and though Lucy Campbell had sent someone to retrieve it today, James Brown had not taken it back. Besides, the car belonged to Lucy Campbell; it was fine for him to drive it when she wasn’t here, but naturally, it should be returned to her when she was.
After finishing work, James Brown walked to the doorway of Sarah Utah’s office. Sarah immediately came out to greet him, wearing a radiant, sweet smile. She said, "Big Brother Brown, you’re really taking me out for dinner."
James Brown laughed and said, "Of course, you were ready to wait for me for a lifetime, how could I not treat you to a meal?"
Sarah’s face turned red, and she hesitantly replied, "I was just anxious at the time; you don’t have to take it to heart."
James Brown chuckled, took Sarah’s hand, and said, "How can I not take it to heart? I’ll treat you to a feast today no matter what."
Sarah hadn’t expected James Brown to take her hand at this moment, right when the fourth floor was bustling with employees leaving work. Now everyone saw them holding hands under the scrutiny of all these eyes. James Brown had just taken her hand... Sarah felt so overwhelmed with happiness that she thought she might faint.
"Manager Johnson, where are you taking Manager Michael?" someone called out.
"That’s an obvious question; they’re going on a date, of course."
"Giggle, I’m so jealous of you, Manager Johnson. A great beauty like Manager Michael, and you’ve swooped her up just like that."
"We won’t have a chance from now on, once they finish their world just for two, Manager Michael will be all Manager Johnson’s."
Listening to the employees making jokes, half-serious half-joking, Sarah was so embarrassed she wished she could crawl into a hole. With her head bowed, her face nearly buried in her chest, she would’ve bumped into the wall if James Brown hadn’t been holding onto her.
Finally, they left the company and sat in a taxi. Sarah finally heaved a sigh of relief. But when she turned to look at James Brown, embarrassment washed over her. She fiddled with her fingers and hesitantly said, "Big Brother Brown, you...I..."
James Brown chuckled and replied, "Let them talk. Right now, just think about what you want to eat tonight. Whether it’s Western food or seafood, don’t worry about trying to save me money."
Sarah hurriedly said, "No need, no need. We can just find a casual restaurant and have a quick bite."
"How can that be okay? How would I show my sincerity if we ate just anything?"
"Really, there’s no need. Those kinds of things are too expensive."
Sarah was truly a thrifty person; there weren’t many girls like her these days. After thinking it over, James Brown said, "Then let’s go for Western food. I know a good place that isn’t expensive and the food is quite good."
"Sure, that sounds good." As soon as Sarah heard the price was not high, she happily agreed.
James Brown couldn’t help but smile and said, "You always think about saving money."
The driver in front chuckled and said, "Buddy, you’ve struck gold. Nowadays, it’s not easy to find a girl who knows how to live frugally yet is as beautiful as her. As for my wife, not only is she not much to look at, but she’s also incredibly ill-tempered, always eager to spend money; it’s such a headache."
Sarah’s cheeks instantly turned red, and she sneakily glanced at James Brown, who did not deny it and laughed, "I think so too."
This made Sarah’s heart sweeter, as James Brown openly acknowledged her as his girlfriend. It felt like a dream. She was so dazed that she didn’t even notice when the car stopped.
James Brown led Sarah into the Western restaurant. The first thing Sarah did was to check the menu for prices. Although it was cheaper than other Western restaurants, the prices were still quite high, which made her somewhat regret coming here. However, now that they were here, leaving immediately wasn’t an option. Besides, having the chance to dine in a romantic Western restaurant with James Brown was worth a little extravagance. So she ordered a pepper steak and a dessert.
James Brown then added some foie gras and caviar to the order, which made Sarah anxious, insisting that he should not order those items.
"All right, let’s have these then." James Brown closed the menu and handed it to the waiter, then smiled at Sarah and said, "It’s okay. You always skimp on eating, so it’s fine to indulge once in a while. We can’t just work and make money without spending any. That would make life so dull, wouldn’t it?"
"But... those items are too expensive. This meal will cost over a thousand dollars."
Silly girl, don’t worry about the cost. Even if it were ten thousand, just having the chance to treat you to a meal is worth it."
James Brown’s words immediately silenced any objection from Sarah, her heart felt as sweet as if she had tasted honey.
Soon the food arrived. Although Sarah had had Western food before, she had never tried things like foie gras or caviar. After tasting a few bites, she realized they were indeed delicious. However, the thought of their prices still made her feel a little guilty.
James Brown could tell from her expression what she was thinking and chuckled, "Still worried about the cost?"
Sarah placed a small piece of foie gras into her mouth, gently chewed, and nodded, "Yes, it’s really too expensive. A small piece of foie gras costs more than a whole fat goose."
James Brown laughed softly and said, "Sarah, if you keep thinking about this, my money is wasted."
"Alright, I won’t think about it. This is really delicious." Sarah swallowed the foie gras and stuck out her tongue, a bit embarrassed.
The meal that followed was thoroughly enjoyed by Sarah. She savored it carefully, not wanting the pleasant environment to end too quickly. For her, this should count as the first official date with James Brown; the previous time they watched a movie didn’t count since she hadn’t confessed her feelings then.
However, Sarah didn’t bring up their relationship; she was smart about that. Since she had let James Brown know her feelings, it was up to him to decide what to do next. Talking too much about it would undoubtedly put a lot of pressure on him. She liked James Brown and didn’t want to stress him too much. She would do whatever she could, and whether James Brown chose her or not, she would have no regrets.
Love is selfish, and it’s rare for someone to act like Sarah. But undoubtedly, her approach was the smartest: she was assertive but not overbearing, gentle yet consistent. Now, she had already made an excellent impression on James Brown, making it impossible for him to ignore her feelings.
