Chapter 288: Chapter 295: A Promise Holds

Gina Lopez was at a loss for words when Sunny Nguyen put it that way.

But Sunny Nguyen misunderstood and took Gina Lopez’s hand seriously, saying, "Gina, we’re good sisters, I’ve never considered you an outsider. If there’s anything, let’s talk about it openly to avoid any hard feelings. I promise you, I will not behave like this with James Brown in the future, so you don’t feel uncomfortable."

Only then did Gina Lopez snap back to her senses, hurrying to reply, "No, no, that’s not what I mean. I haven’t had that kind of relationship with James Brown."

"Really?" Sunny Nguyen teased Gina Lopez with a wink.

Gina Lopez immediately felt the awkwardness under Sunny Nguyen’s gaze, knowing that Sunny Nguyen must not believe her now, so she gritted her teeth and recounted the incident where she pretended to be James Brown’s wife the other day, including the details—she even went into detail because she knew that Sunny Nguyen and James Brown were just engaged in that act a moment ago.

Sunny Nguyen was astonished upon listening and commented, "James Brown is really something, able to restrain himself in that kind of situation."

Gina Lopez gave an embarrassed smile, saying, "Maybe he was afraid that people would see the problem."

Sunny Nguyen laughed, "Hehe, I wouldn’t know about that. But the way things are between you two now, it’s no different from having a real relationship. I won’t meddle anymore then; I hope you two can eventually become a couple."

Gina Lopez hurried to clarify, "That’s not what I meant, Sister Sunny, I really don’t have that kind of thought. I’m Gina Lopez, even if, even if I really did marry James Brown, I wouldn’t stop him from being with you."

Sunny Nguyen laughed out loud, and Gina Lopez gave her a nudge, protesting, "Don’t you believe what I said?"

Sunny Nguyen managed to suppress her laughter, saying, "What silliness is this, what kind of person would let their own husband fool around with another woman."

"You’re not an outsider, you’ve been with James Brown for a long time. Under normal circumstances, it would be perfectly right if you were with James Brown. I always feel like I’ve snatched him from you, but you’ve never minded it. How could I stop you two from being together? Plus, you’ve said it yourself, you never thought of marrying James Brown, so there won’t be any problems."

Sunny Nguyen found Gina Lopez’s train of thought to be really bizarre and somewhat naïve. The main thing was she didn’t expect that despite developing her relationship with James Brown to this point, Gina Lopez still hadn’t changed her mind about it, which was rather touching.

Holding Gina Lopez’s hand, Sunny Nguyen said emotionally, "Gina, I’m so grateful for your kindness, I really don’t know what to say. No matter what happens in the future, I, Sunny Nguyen, will never let you down. Just say the word, and I’ll break with James Brown completely, without the slightest involvement."

Gina Lopez grasped Sunny Nguyen’s hand in return, smiling as she said, "Sister Sunny, rest assured, I would never do that. I know I’m too prideful, and in many ways, I’m not suitable to be a good wife. I’m counting on you to keep that guy’s heart in the future."

Sunny Nguyen laughed heartily, "Okay, then I won’t be polite."

James Brown had no idea that the discussion between Gina Lopez and Sunny Nguyen was about this matter. After making merry with Sunny Nguyen, he was feeling refreshed and leisurely returned to his office.

Since Linda Campbell mentioned that she would dine with the Mayor tonight, James Brown wouldn’t be able to have dinner with Sarah Utah. He made a call to Sarah Utah, and she was very understanding. After her bold confession today, she was teased by her company colleagues and now she felt rather shy facing James Brown. Besides, she was afraid of causing trouble for James Brown, who now had a girlfriend.

In the evening, James Brown and Gina Lopez took a car to the L Hotel. For someone like Linda Campbell, dining elsewhere would be disrespectful, so the L Hotel in YODC City was the only choice.

Besides Mayor Christopher Brown, who came today, there was also Mayor David Johnson and Chief of Public Security Bureau John Harris.

After everyone arrived at the private room, Christopher Brown introduced everyone around. They had all dined with James Brown and Linda Campbell before; the primary introduction was for Gina Lopez.

Director N of the Public Security Bureau, John Harris, shook hands with James Brown, expressing his guilt, "Mr. Brown, I have been negligent in my work, allowing such scum to emerge from the Public Security System. Everyone involved in this matter has been severely dealt with, especially Qian Liben, James Robinson, and Alan Johnson, who have been expelled from the Public Security System and handed over to the Integrity Department for investigation."

James Brown smiled faintly, not taking the matter to heart, and said, "I’m fine, and it’s good that you’ve handled it. I know Director N is a great cop. In a big forest, there’ll be all kinds of birds. As a director, you naturally can’t be clear about every subordinate’s character. It’s not your fault."

The Public Security Bureau Chief indeed holds significant influence in YODC City, but he is nothing in front of Lucy Campbell, and definitely not qualified in front of James Brown, her cousin. Seeing that James doesn’t seem angry or intent on pursuing the matter, he felt relieved at once.

Lucy Campbell spoke very seriously, "This matter must be dealt with strictly. If law enforcers commit such acts, the damage will be even greater. The higher authorities are currently clamping down hard on such issues. If you do not take it seriously, I’m afraid it will bring trouble to everyone involved."

Coming from anyone else, this might seem like an exaggeration, but not when it comes from Lucy Campbell. The three senior city officials did not dare to take her words lightly and promptly expressed their commitment to address the issue of legal violations within the government departments.

These matters were of little interest to James Brown. Fortunately, the leaders didn’t dwell on them for long, and once the dishes were served, they began to eat and drink.

"Mr. Brown, there’s a business networking event in the city in a few days, would you consider joining us?" Christopher Brown asked with a smile after clinking glasses with James Brown.

James Brown shook his head, responding, "I’m not interested in such networking events. I’d rather not."

Christopher Brown hesitated before saying, "Mr. Brown, there are many who are unaware of your identity. Thus, it is possible for some ignorant people to offend you. Perhaps it’s better if people are aware of your identity to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings."

James Brown replied with a smile, "Secretary Johnson, rest assured, I don’t go around causing trouble for others, nor do I bully people. As long as nobody provokes me, there won’t be any problems."

Lucy Campbell also spoke with a smile, "My cousin doesn’t like to draw attention. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have come to YODC City. I think as long as the leaders manage their city well, no one will bother my cousin."

At this, Christopher Brown and the others felt the predicament internally. There will always be some individuals who think that having some money and power makes them invincible, and that’s something that cannot be entirely prevented. If such people were to offend James Brown, that would be very troublesome.

But since Lucy Campbell and James Brown had already made their stance clear, it was not their place to say more. They considered informing some of the key leaders to not provoke anyone from J Corporation. As for others, if they really are blind to the situation, then it would be their bad luck, and it might serve as a lesson to deflate their arrogance.

Gina Lopez, being on a different level compared to the three city officials, felt somewhat out of place even though she was dining at the same table. Facing the city officials, she felt intimidated and dared not start a conversation.

Seeing James Brown talking and laughing confidently with the city officials and even taking a leading role in the conversation was partly due to being Lucy Campbell’s cousin, but more importantly, it was because of James’s own composure. Admiring him for that alone, Gina’s esteem for James increased.

A man who does not fear authority inherently has a demeanor that commands respect. Gina had not noticed this before, but now she did. She wondered how such a demeanor was cultivated. She didn’t believe military service alone could have fostered James’s aura unless he was indeed frequently interacting with high-level leaders.

Thinking of this, Gina became more curious about James, feeling an interest in uncovering the unknown aspects of this man.

"Mr. Lopez, our company is going to expand in YODC City. We will inevitably need the leaders’ assistance, so you should at least offer a toast," said Lucy Campbell, interrupting Gina’s curiosity about James. She stood up promptly, poured wine for the three officials, and then filled her own glass before offering a toast to them.

The three officials treated Gina courteously, but their attentiveness was noticeably less compared to their interaction with Lucy Campbell and James Brown.

Lucy Campbell smiled slightly, adding, "Mr. Lopez is someone I highly value. I hope the leaders will take good care of her."

With these words, Lucy Campbell signaled that Gina was not just someone helping her manage the company, but a confidant. This made the officials approach Gina with a greater degree of respect.

The meal was quite enjoyable, and the party did not disperse until two hours later.

All three had been drinking and were driven home by the drivers brought by Lucy Campbell. Gina had some things she wanted to discuss with James, but since Lucy and James were going home together, she had to keep her thoughts to herself for the time being.
