Chapter 256: Chapter 261: Courting Disaster

"Why didn’t you call me?" James Brown asked Emily Lopez with a smile.

Emily Lopez pouted her lips and said, "Your phone is with my sister. When I called you, she was the one who answered and gave me an earful."

James Brown then remembered that his cellphone was with Gina Lopez. No wonder the afternoon was so quiet. He chuckled and said, "I forgot to take it when I went to your sister’s place just now. Let’s hurry out to dinner."

"Sure!" Emily Lopez linked her arm with James Brown’s, and the two of them walked shoulder to shoulder towards the door.

They had barely walked a few steps when it was time to leave work. Gina Lopez went to James Brown’s office to find him but he wasn’t there. When she asked the HR department, they said James Brown had left more than ten minutes ago. She was immediately annoyed.

When she reached the entrance of the company, she noticed several security guards looking at her with extremely strange expressions. She frowned and asked, "What’s the matter with you guys?"

The security guards quickly shook their heads and stuttered, "Nothing... Nothing at all."

Gina Lopez had a thought and asked, "Did you just see someone who looks like me here?"

The security guards were puzzled by Gina Lopez’s question, but one of them, a bit smarter, quickly said, "Yes, just now we saw a girl who looked exactly like Mr. Lopez leaving with Manager Johnson. That person was definitely not you."

Gina Lopez’s face darkened and with a wave of her hand, she strode out of the company. The security guards quietly asked the one who had spoken, "What’s going on here?"

"Don’t you see? Mr. Lopez doesn’t want others to know she’s dating Manager Johnson. Keep your mouths shut, everyone. If anyone lets this slip, we’re all going to lose our jobs."

The group suddenly understood and nodded repeatedly. In a big company like this, if news the boss wanted to keep secret got out, they would be in trouble. Whether they could keep working here depended on a single word from Mr. Lopez. Besides, the benefits here were pretty good, and as security guards, it was unlikely they’d find a better deal elsewhere.

Just as James Brown and Emily Lopez arrived at a western restaurant, Gina Lopez’s call came through. Emily Lopez picked up, and Gina Lopez said angrily, "Emily Lopez, didn’t you promise you wouldn’t cause trouble this month?"

Emily Lopez immediately responded playfully, "I didn’t say I would cause trouble. I just felt happy today and wanted to have a meal with my brother-in-law. It’s normal for friends to dine together, right? Besides, I still see him as my brother-in-law. There’s no reason for you to be upset if a brother-in-law accompanies his sister-in-law, right?"

"You..."

"Don’t worry. We’re really just having a meal. As you know, I don’t have many friends here. Do you want me to die of boredom? I need to find some people to hang out with. If you’re worried, I could just randomly invite a few people to hang out with me."

"You... then let your brother-in-law accompany you," said Gina Lopez, defeated. Her sister used to hang out with friends who were all over the place. Finally, she had stopped associating with them and the family had been relieved. If Emily started hanging out with unsavory friends again, they would be constantly worried.

"Hehe, don’t worry. We’re just going out to eat and have some fun. I won’t break anything, and I’ll return your brother-in-law to you good as new."

Gina Lopez said irritably, "Then don’t stay out too late, you have work tomorrow."

"Got it, big sis." Emily Lopez hung up the phone and winked triumphantly at James Brown, "I’ve dealt with my sister. Let’s play all night long tonight."

James Brown laughed and said, "Play all night? Your sister will blow up your phone with calls."

"I’ll switch off my phone later too, so she can’t find me. You didn’t bring your phone either, so now neither of us can be traced."

James Brown laughed heartily but then remembered something and said, "No, I need to get my phone back in case there’s something important. If your sister picks up, that would be a disaster."

"You’re not afraid that your girlfriend will call, are you?" asked Emily Lopez with a grin.

James Brown shook his head and said, "No."

"Then it’s some other woman? Look here, Brother-in-law, that’s not right. My sister and I both like you. Are we really that bad? You don’t fancy either of us?"

James Brown playfully smacked Emily Lopez on the head and scolded, "You silly girl, what nonsense are you talking about? I really do have something important. Give me the phone, I need to get my phone from your sister."

Emily Lopez quickly withdrew her hand, anxiously saying, "No way, if we go to my sister, that’s like walking into the lion’s den. We won’t be able to get out."

James Brown was amused by Emily Lopez and said, "Don’t be afraid, I’ll make sure to bring you back."

"Really? What if my sister doesn’t agree?"

"Then I’ll just have to tie her up and see if she can still stop us."

"Ha ha..." Emily Lopez couldn’t stop laughing, and after a while, trying to hold back her laughter, said, "Brother-in-law, you’re suggesting playing that kind of game with my sister, aren’t you?"

James Brown was momentarily stunned, then said with a mix of laughter and tears, "You silly girl, what on earth is going on in that head of yours?"

"Hehe, just think about it, my sister is the typical Queen. If she wore a leather jacket and skirt, with big leather boots, and held a leather whip in her hand, and then stood with one foot on a chair, snapping the whip, that would be so cool."

James Brown suddenly felt a surge of frustration and said, "It seems like you actually enjoy this kind of thing."

"No way, no way, I definitely don’t have that Queen’s temperament like my sister, Lisa Smith. It’s pretty funny when I think about it. Hey, Brother-in-law, don’t you want to give it a try?"

James Brown felt as if a torrent of black lines were falling off his forehead and he said, "That’s not my kind of hobby. You better find some other guy to try that with."

"Can you really bear to?"

"What’s there for me not to bear? I’m telling you, not just your sister, even you, whoever you want to be with, I can bear it."

Emily Lopez sulked and complained, "Brother-in-law, you’re really disappointing, considering how nice my sister and I have been to you."

James Brown had to admit that Emily Lopez had been nice to him, but as for Gina Lopez, he hadn’t felt her being particularly kind. However, if he continued on this topic, it would just drag on endlessly, so he snatched the phone from Emily Lopez and dialed Gina Lopez’s number.

"What do you want?" Gina Lopez asked in a displeased tone.

"Where are you? I’m coming over to get my phone back."

"I’m already home. Come back," Gina Lopez responded quite readily.

James Brown hung up the phone, and Emily Lopez waved her little fist and said, "See, she can’t wait for us to return. It’s just a phone, why do you insist on going back to get it?"

James Brown turned the car around and said with a smile, "Let’s go then. Let’s go."

Ten minutes later, James Brown and Emily Lopez had already entered the house. Gina Lopez was holding a phone, having just taken it away from her ear, apparently just finishing a call, and it was James Brown’s phone.

James Brown immediately tense up and asked, "Who called?"

Gina Lopez frowned and looked at James Brown, "What have you been up to outside?"

Seeing Gina Lopez’s tone, James Brown knew it had to be John Smith who had called. James Brown had two SIM cards in his phone; he used a specific one when he went out with Helen Wilson, and he had deactivated his old SIM card. After getting back, he had reactivated both SIM cards.

"What did he tell you? And what did you say to him?" James Brown sat next to Gina Lopez, his expression grave.

Gina Lopez wasn’t used to seeing James Brown so serious, but recalling the tone of the other party on the phone, she was quite annoyed and snorted, "James Brown, how can you be friends with someone like that? He’s simply social scum, downright trash."

James Brown was even more sure it was John Smith on the line. That guy was lecherous and it was certain he’d spoken flippantly with women. But what he cared about most now was what Gina Lopez had said to him. This was crucial. If there was a slip-up on Gina Lopez’s part, his and Helen Wilson’s scheme would be ruined.

Helen Wilson had put so much effort into this, even tricking Fourteen dollars out of her family intended for her wedding. If it all failed because of this incident, James Brown could imagine Helen Wilson going insane with rage.

"Brother-in-law, is this really serious?" asked Emily Lopez cautiously.

James Brown nodded and said, "It’s very serious. Gina, you need to tell me exactly what he said to you on the phone and what you said to him, without missing a single word."

Gina Lopez also sensed that the situation was not as she imagined, but she was still confused and said, "Isn’t he your friend?"

"Why would I have such friends? I’m assisting the police with a case. That guy is an important informant. I’m currently using a fake identity, so what you said could decide whether my cover is blown."

Emily Lopez’s eyes lit up, and she excitedly grabbed James Brown’s arm, "Brother-in-law, this is so thrilling! Can I join you?"

James Brown shook his head and said, "Those people are extremely dangerous, ruthless individuals. How could I let you get involved?"

Gina Lopez frowned slightly and asked, "You’re not a cop, so why are you getting involved?"

James Brown, somewhat impatiently, replied, "We’ll talk about this later. This involves not just me; it could even lead to loss of life. Can you please just repeat the phone call?"

Gina Lopez felt a bit embarrassed being scolded by James Brown but still took a deep breath and said, "He called and started with, ’Mr. Lee, it’s Little Sam...’ I told him you left your phone here, and it wasn’t on you. I’d wait for you to call him back. He immediately..."

At this point, Gina Lopez’s eyes flashed with anger. James Brown hurriedly said, "I know he must have said something offensive, but you can’t hide it from me. You have to tell me."

Gina Lopez had wanted to gloss over it, but hearing James Brown insisting, she had to take a deep breath and continued, "He then said, ’Oh, it’s sister-in-law, heh heh, why did Mr. Lee leave you alone, running off by himself?’"

"At the time, I was still a bit puzzled and didn’t respond right away. Then he went on, ’Mr. Lee really threw such a pretty sister-in-law at home by herself. Sister-in-law, luckily I am free today too, why don’t I take you out for some fun? How about that?’"

As soon as James Brown heard this, he knew things were turning bad and urgently asked, "What did you say?"
