Chapter 232: Chapter 234 Drunk
Getting married definitely calls for a celebration. Originally, Gina Lopez proposed going out to eat, but Jonathan Lopez and his wife felt that dining out wouldn’t be so carefree. In the end, they decided to cook a table full of dishes at home. Although it was just the five of them, the atmosphere was lively, largely because of Emily Lopez, the lively little aunt, who kept teasing James Brown, adding to the joyous atmosphere.
Tonight, Jonathan Lopez and his wife drank quite a bit of alcohol and were extremely happy. Jonathan Lopez patted James Brown on the shoulder and said, "James, I’m entrusting Gina to you now. My daughter is quite temperamental. If there’s anything wrong, feel free to scold or chastise her as necessary. Women need to be pampered, but not overly so."
Gina Lopez immediately protested, "Dad, why aren’t you siding with your daughter?"
Jonathan Lopez laughed and said, "Of course, I dote on my daughter. But once she’s married, she’s starting a new family. Friction is inevitable when two people are together. If you always give in, it will only lead to bigger problems in the end. You are too dominant, and I don’t want James to end up too passive."
James Brown chuckled, "Dad, you don’t have to worry about that." Since they got their marriage certificate, Jonathan Lopez and his wife insisted that James Brown change how he addresses them. It was quite awkward for James at first, but after calling them a few times, it started to feel natural.
What mattered most was that after his parents passed away, James had not felt this sense of family. Staying with Gina’s family gave him that feeling again. Even if it weren’t for the fake marriage with Gina, he felt it was worthwhile to change how he addressed them, considering how well Jonathan Lopez and his wife treated him.
At this point, Mrs. Lopez chimed in, "The most important thing is to have children soon. James, don’t listen to Gina—all this talk about being busy with work and it not being the right time for children are just excuses. Once a woman gets married, she should have children. Human desires are endless. You’ve achieved so much now, and you will always feel there are higher accomplishments to pursue. But by the time you realize what’s important, you’ll be too old. Even if you can still have children, by the time they grow up a bit, you’ll be too old to have the energy to manage them. So, you need to exert effort now, you hear?"
Emily Lopez gave her mother a thumbs-up, "Mom, this is the first time I’ve heard you say something so philosophical."
Mrs. Lopez glared, "Don’t think because I nag, it’s not for your good. As a mother, would I harm my own daughter?"
James Brown humbly responded, "Yes, we will try our best."
Although Gina Lopez felt awkward, she went along with her mother’s words. However, she did not quite agree with them internally, as she had her own plans for her life—to marry at thirty and have children before thirty-five.
"Come on, let’s keep drinking and be happy," Jonathan Lopez raised his glass again. He loved to drink, and usually, his wife would not let him drink much. Today, however, he felt liberated and was not ready to stop.
They drank until past ten-thirty. Jonathan Lopez was quite drunk. James Brown helped Jonathan into the bedroom, and Mrs. Lopez, who was also very happy today and had drunk quite a bit, though she rarely drank, could not hold on either and went to her bedroom to sleep.
Emily Lopez was still full of energy. When James came back, she immediately tapped on the table and said, "Brother-in-law, make me a cocktail, will you?"
James Brown, though quite drunk himself, cheerfully agreed. Gina Lopez had intended to go to sleep, but seeing James with Emily, she couldn’t put her mind at ease, so she decided to stay with them.
The trio moved to the living room, where James mixed a cocktail for Emily and Gina with the few types of alcohol available at Gina’s place.
"Brother-in-law, are you not drinking?" Emily Lopez held up her glass, looking at James Brown.
James poured himself a beer and said, "I’ll have this."
Emily immediately protested, "No no, I have all sorts of alcohol here, how can you just drink beer? You... should drink spirits."
"I’ve already had quite a bit, drinking more will get me really drunk," James quickly excused himself.
"It’s fine to get a bit more drunk, we’re at home anyway. If you get too drunk, just go to sleep. Besides, today is the big happy day of your marriage with my sister, you should drink more to honor this special day," Emily winked at James as she spoke.
"Alright, I’ll drink just a little bit more then," James drained his beer and poured a small amount of spirits.
"That’s not enough, are you saving that to keep goldfish?" Emily grabbed the bottle of spirits, filled up most of the glass for James, and then stopped.
Gina’s eyes widened, "Are you trying to get your brother-in-law drunk?"
Emily giggled, "Getting him drunk is good. Drunken chaos, hehe..."
Gina’s face darkened, looking at James. She grew genuinely worried—if James really got too drunk and started making advances in the room, what would she do? If she screamed, it would definitely wake her parents. Even if she stopped James, their fake marriage would be exposed. After all, with a marriage certificate, Gina had no reason to reject James’s advancements.
And if James just did whatever he wanted, that was even less acceptable to her. She was still a virgin and not truly married to James. How could she just blur the lines and give her first time to James so casually?
Emily Lopez had one hand on James Brown’s shoulder and winked at Gina Lopez, saying, "Brother-in-law, look, my sister is already moved, you mustn’t let her off tonight."
James Brown chuckled lightly and said, "Stop messing around. You know very well what’s between me and your sister, I wouldn’t dare do anything to her."
Emily Lopez pouted and said, "Didn’t my sister insist on being with you? If it were me, I would marry you right away and go to bed with you to truly be your wife. It’s just that she deliberately prevents me from being with you."
Gina Lopez was startled, it would be terrible if the parents heard this. She glared and said, "Don’t talk nonsense."
Emily Lopez snorted and said, "How am I talking nonsense? You know I like my brother-in-law, and you’re just being nasty to keep me away from him. Hmph, brother-in-law, come, let’s drink."
"You can’t drink that much." Gina promptly held back James Brown’s hand.
Emily Lopez snorted and said, "If you don’t let my brother-in-law drink with me, then I’ll just shout out the truth."
"You dare?"
"What wouldn’t I dare? Speaking out doesn’t hurt me at all, it’s only beneficial for me."
"You..." Gina was at a loss for words.
James Brown gently pulled Gina’s hand away, smiling, "It’s alright, let me just drink with Emily. It’s rare for us to be happy today."
Gina, feeling helpless, could only watch the two getting ready to continue drinking, but Nina Lopez had just lifted her glass and then set it down again, saying with a sly smile to Gina, "You have to drink too. If you don’t, I will shout as well."
Gina was angry now, but she really couldn’t do anything about this sister who might really do it. She picked up the glass and said, "You think I’m afraid of you? Let’s drink." She then gulped down the cocktail in one go.
"Not bad, brother-in-law. Cheers." She also drank a glass in one gulp.
James Brown picked up his glass, made a sour face and said, "Do I have to finish mine?"
Emily Lopez did not agree, shouting, "How could you not finish? We both did, you have to as well."
"It’s liquor."
"What’s there to fear about liquor? I know you can drink, drinking beer for you is like drinking water, so there’s no fun in that. We have to drink liquor, that’s the only way I can have a chance of outdrinking you. What’s up, brother-in-law, you’re backing out now? That’s not like you."
James Brown laughed heartily, saying, "In front of a man, you can’t say ’I can’t’. Alright, then I’ll just go for it, I must drink merrily with you."
"Excellent, let’s have a good time." Emily was even more excited, and quickly filled the glasses of all three with beer.
In less than half an hour, the three of them drank about ten bottles of beer. Although Gina had built up some tolerance from attending various functions, she was overwhelmed by now. Although she wasn’t immediately passing out, she was swaying around, her eyes nearly unable to stay open, and she was starting to slur her words.
Emily was also drunk by this point, but she wasn’t confused or wild; her eyes were shining bright like light bulbs, but she was also having trouble sitting steadily.
James Brown wasn’t doing much better either. He could normally hold his liquor, but he wasn’t immune to alcohol. He had already drunk quite a bit of liquor earlier that evening with Jonathan Lopez, and then continued with beer and liquor. Although he was still holding on, he was already quite tipsy.
"No...I can’t anymore, I can’t drink anymore," Gina gestured with her hands, leaning to one side and resting on James Brown’s shoulder, but she didn’t stabilize and slid down, with James instinctively catching her, letting her head rest on his thigh.
"Brother-in-law, let’s keep drinking." Emily brought another glass to her lips, but she drank only half and spilled the rest on herself, then ended up leaning towards James Brown too.
James Brown also caught Emily, letting her rest on his leg as well. At that point, he had intended to go back to the bedroom but felt dizzy, closed his eyes just to rest, but soon fell asleep.
The next morning, Mrs. Lopez got up early and was astonished to see the three of them in the living room, gawking at their sleeping positions.
