Chapter 218: Chapter 219: The Righteous Emily Jenkins
Emily followed Big Brother Brown into his car. She had already recounted what happened to James Brown. Tonight, she didn’t wait for James to come back for dinner, so she came here to buy some food. While doing so, she saw a stall selling something interesting and decided to record the process. Just as she started recording, the accident happened, and she captured the whole incident on video. The group that assaulted the victim seemed to have some backing; they were shouting provocatively, claiming even if they killed someone, it would be in vain as the police would be of no help whatsoever.
That’s why Emily felt that the police station would definitely side against the taxi driver, so she wanted to testify to ensure the driver wouldn’t be mistreated.
James was quite surprised and said to Emily, "You have a strong sense of justice, huh?"
Emily, indignant, replied, "This has nothing to do with justice. I just can’t stand the arrogance of those people. They clearly hit someone first and not only did they refuse to reason, but they also beat up others. If I don’t take them down, I simply cannot swallow this injustice."
"But even if we have evidence, I’m afraid it might not make any difference," he said.
Emily clenched her fist and snorted, "Hmph, if they don’t care, I will release all the evidence online. I’d like to see if they’re afraid then. Even if his dad is Robert Taylor, it will be no use."
Seeing Emily like this, James had no reason not to support her. He had noticed the police station’s vehicles earlier and knew they were from the local station—Helen Wilson’s station. So he drove straight here.
As expected, they arrived at the police station and saw the police car from before as well as a BMW. The three of them got out of the car and walked directly into the station.
An on-duty officer at the entrance, seeing James and the others, immediately came out to stop them, asking, "What’s the matter?"
Emily promptly replied, "Officer, I recorded the entire scuffle that just occurred. I have proof that the taxi drivers are not at fault at all."
The officer nodded, "Then come in with me."
The officer led James and the others to a room and said, "Wait here for a bit. Someone will be with you shortly." Then he left.
It wasn’t long before another officer walked in, sat down, and asked, "Who has the video?"
Emily immediately answered, "I do."
"Alright, give me the video."
Just as Emily was about to hand over her phone, she quickly added, "I’ll send it to you."
The officer frowned, "That won’t work, we need the original evidence for the case."
"But there are some of my personal photos and such on my phone."
"You can delete those."
Reluctantly, Emily transferred everything but the video from the card to her phone and deleted the rest, finally taking out the card and saying, "So I’ll give you this memory card as evidence, alright?"
The officer nodded, "That will do."
Emily handed over the memory card to the officer, who took it and said, "Thank you for supporting the police’s work. You can leave now."
"Oh..." Emily murmured an acknowledgment and took a couple of steps towards the door, but then stopped and asked, "Aren’t you going to return my memory card?"
"It’s now part of the police evidence and cannot be returned to you, but you can buy a new one and get reimbursed by us."
Who would bother to get reimbursed for such a cheap item as a memory card?
But Emily said, "That won’t do. I’ll wait for you to resolve this case before I leave."
The officer’s eyebrows furrowed, "We don’t need to explain how we handle cases to you. Hurry up and leave, don’t disturb our investigation." His attitude had noticeably changed after obtaining the memory card; he wasn’t courteous to Emily at all anymore and just wanted to send her away.
At that, Emily was instantly furious, glaring as she demanded, "Then give me back my card. I’ll post the evidence online myself."
The officer snorted, "Police property isn’t something you can just take back."
"What police property? That’s clearly my own memory card," Emily argued.
"Now that it has become evidence, it’s no longer your personal property, and like I said, you can get another one and we’ll reimburse you."
Emily quivered with anger, retorting, "Fine, I want to see how you’re going to use the evidence to handle this case."
The officer’s eyes also flared up as he barked, "How does our police department handle cases? What business is it of yours? I’m warning you, if you don’t leave now, you’ll be making a disturbance. Don’t blame me for not being polite."
"What? I’m making a disturbance?" Emily was in disbelief. She had come to assist the police with the case, but now she was being accused of causing trouble, which was unacceptable to her.
The officer coldly looked at her, "What do you think you’re doing here?"
"Fine, fine! I’ll dig my heels in, and what can you do to me? I want to see how you’re going to handle this." At this point, Emily Jenkins was also stubbornly defiant, she plopped down on a chair, glaring fiercely at the police officer.
The officer frowned and huffed coldly before turning and walking out.
It wasn’t just Emily Jenkins who was angry; even someone as good-natured as Emma Campbell was fuming at this point, biting her lip and saying, "How can the police be like this? This is infuriating."
James Brown was very composed, lit a cigarette, and said, "There are too many infuriating people in this world."
Emily Jenkins pouted and said, "Anyway, I’m going to stick it out with them. I want to see what they’ll actually do. Big Brother Brown, Emma, you both should head back first."
James Brown laughed and said, "Can we really leave you here by yourself and not worry?"
Emily Jenkins immediately responded, "This is a police station, what can they possibly do to me? It’s so late, I’ve dragged you out here, and even interrupted your time together, you really don’t need to keep me company now."
Emma Campbell’s face turned red, and she said shyly, "Sister Sarah, we were just out for a walk, it’s no big deal."
James Brown laughed, "Let’s just consider we also came to the police station for a visit."
With James Brown and Emma Campbell accompanying her, Emily Jenkins felt somewhat reassured, though she herself was also quite uneasy being here.
After waiting for about ten minutes, voices could be heard in the hallway. Emily Jenkins immediately dashed to the door and peered out the window, seeing the group responsible for hitting people walking nonchalantly down the hallway, looking utterly self-satisfied.
"Director John, that’s that, we’re leaving. I’ll give you all a call tomorrow, take you out for a good drink," one of them said.
Director John shook hands with the young man who spoke and said, "No need, no need, it’s just a small matter, there’s no need for drinks. Just send my regards to Mr. Shaw."
"Ha-ha, definitely, but just don’t tell my dad about this, or he’s going to scold me."
"It’s such a minor issue, don’t worry about it. Even if it does reach Mr. Shaw’s ears, I’ll smooth it over for you."
"Director John, you’re a real pal. Don’t worry, I’ll talk to my mom about it. She’ll definitely say some good words to my dad for you, the promotion shouldn’t be a problem."
"I really appreciate that." Director John was beaming as he escorted the three men out.
Emily Jenkins had already guessed that these people had not received any punishment, which immediately stoked her anger. She yanked open the door and blocked the four men, pointing at the trio and demanding of Director John, "They assaulted someone, why are you letting them go?"
Director John was taken aback, then his face became stern as he said, "Who are you?"
Emily Jenkins, not to be intimidated, replied, "I’m a witness. I can prove they hit someone. I even provided you with a video that’s sufficient to prove the assault. And just because his dad is some Mr. Shaw, you’re letting them go? What kind of police director are you?"
Director John’s expression changed, and he said sharply, "Young lady, don’t you spout nonsense. I didn’t see any evidence you provided. According to our investigation, this was just a traffic accident. The traffic police will handle it."
"I didn’t provide evidence? I clearly handed over the memory card from my phone to one of your officers," Emily Jenkins said, her face turning red with anger.
"Is that so? To whom did you hand it?"
"I handed it to one of your officers."
"Well, then, I’ll call out all the officers on duty today, and you can identify who you gave it to." Director John called out, and several police officers emerged, but the one who had taken the memory card from Emily Jenkins was not among them.
Emily Jenkins looked distressed, but immediately exclaimed, "He must be hiding."
Director John’s face turned grim, "You’re blatantly slandering the police. Do you understand the consequences of what you’re saying?"
Emily Jenkins lifted her chin defiantly, "Then dare you let me search for it?"
"Hmph, go ahead and search. But if you can’t find it, I’m going to detain you."
"Detain me then, I’m not afraid of you," Emily Jenkins said through gritted teeth and then started searching room by room. But apart from the few officers present, she couldn’t find the one who’d asked for her phone’s memory card.
James Brown had already anticipated this result. On the opposite wall were the police station’s staff photos, and the officer who had taken the memory card was not among them. It wasn’t because that person wasn’t part of the station, but because he was an auxiliary police officer—a so-called temp worker.
The other party kept Emily Jenkins here, clearly foreseeing this move, and had the auxiliary officer leave earlier.
"Hmph, what have you got to say now?" Director John looked coldly at Emily Jenkins.
Emily Jenkins stood, dumbfounded in front of James Brown, completely confused by the situation. She had clearly given the memory card to the police, but now that officer had disappeared, and all her evidence was gone.
Mr. Shaw’s son, who had been watching Emily Jenkins, laughed and said, "Director John, why make it hard for such a beauty? Beauty, if you’re free, how about we go out to dinner? I’ll give you a proper explanation."
