Chapter 217: Chapter 218 Secretly

After buying groceries, James Brown personally cooked a lavish dinner. He drank quite a bit with Jonathan Lopez before taking his leave. He had a good reason, after all, since the place was small with only two bedrooms, it wouldn’t be right to make the old couple stay elsewhere or drive Emily Lopez out, so he decided to make do for the night at the office.

Fortunately, Charlotte Grandy didn’t call during dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Lopez tonight, otherwise, there would have been even more trouble. Yet, when he got home, he didn’t see Charlotte. From the signs around the house, it seemed Charlotte hadn’t been back since she left in the morning.

This got James worried. Now that Charlotte was staying at his place, if something happened to her, he would bear an inescapable responsibility. Although James Brown was unafraid of the responsibility, he couldn’t get over his own concerns. He quickly called Charlotte, but her phone was switched off, and this increased his worry.

At this moment, Emma Campbell called and informed him that Charlotte’s parents had taken her back home and confiscated her phone. She could only use QQ online to notify Emma. Emma had gone out with classmates for the evening and came back a bit late, only to see the message then and there, hence she informed James.

Knowing that Charlotte was safe, James finally felt relieved and also a little more relaxed; otherwise, that girl’s presence was making things increasingly unbearable for him.

"Big Brother Brown, you... you..." Emma suddenly started to stammer.

James quickly said, "What’s wrong? Just say it. Are you running short on cash?"

"No, no!" Emma hurriedly denied.

"Then what’s the matter? Did you run into some trouble?"

"I... I just wanted to ask Big Brother Brown... do you... do you miss me?"

James was taken aback for a moment, then a strong wave of warmth surged through him and he tenderly said, "Of course I miss you. I want to hold you right now. Shall I pick you up?"

"No! Don’t come pick me up," Emma seemed very flustered.

James asked in confusion, "What’s wrong? Don’t you miss me?"

"It’s not that. I miss... Big Brother Brown very much, but... but... I just got my... period today."

James could imagine Emma’s embarrassed and awkward expression as she spoke, and couldn’t help but chuckle, saying, "Silly girl, did you think I miss you only for that? We can talk, we can watch TV, and we can sleep cuddled up together, can’t we?"

Emma said softly, "But... But it must be tough for Big Brother Brown."

A wave of emotion went through James, and he laughed, saying, "Then you must have other ways to help me, right?"

"Other ways?" Emma sounded a bit perplexed.

Hearing Emma’s tone, James slightly regretted his words. Emma, being such a pure girl, knew nothing about these matters. His suggestion almost felt like it tainted her innocence, so he quickly added, "I’m just joking with you. Wait for me; I’m coming to your school now to pick you up."

"Ah! Are you really coming?" Emma sounded both surprised and delighted.

"Of course, it’s true. Would you prefer me to wait at the school gate or downstairs from your dorm?" James asked with a smile.

"I... let’s meet at the school gate then, Big Brother Brown. I’m not afraid of people seeing us, it’s just that... just..."

"Silly girl, I understand. You just don’t want to make others too envious, right?" James laughed heartily, "Alright, I’ll be at your school gate in half an hour."

"Mm-hm!" Emma agreed repeatedly before hanging up.

Most girls have a sense of vanity, and James could very well understand that. People like Charlotte Grandy and Emily Lopez loved to show off, but Emma didn’t think that way at all. She never thought about James driving to pick her up in front of her classmates to show off.

Having changed clothes, James drove to Emma’s school. It didn’t take long for an excited Emma to come out of the school and quickly get into James’s car.

She stole a glance at James and shyly said, "Big Brother Brown, sorry to keep you waiting."

James started the car and smilingly said, "When going on a date, it’s always good for a man to arrive a bit early to show sincerity."

"Date..." The color on Emma’s face deepened, but there was a strange gleam in her eyes, and then they started to well up with tears.

James Brown could understand Emma Campbell’s thoughts, and he couldn’t help feeling a bit apologetic. Holding the steering wheel with his left hand and grasping Emma’s left hand with his right, he gently said, "Emma, I’m sorry for not making you feel like you’re in a romantic relationship."

Emma grasped James Brown’s hand back and shook her head repeatedly, saying, "Big Brother Brown, it’s already really nice, truly very nice."

James Brown chuckled and said, "From now on, whenever we have time, let’s go shopping and watch movies and such. You can’t refuse to come out with me."

"I will definitely come out," Emma replied as she wiped her eyes and gave James Brown a sweet smile. That smile was indescribably brilliant and charming.

"Then let’s go have a romantic time right now. We can’t just go straight home and sleep, can we?" James Brown said to Emma with a wink.

Emma was so happy she didn’t know what to say anymore; she just nodded repeatedly. Whatever James wanted to do, she would accept unconditionally, especially if it was something that made her happy.

During this time, Emma had indeed lost that emotion of feeling indebted, but when with James, she still put him first in everything. Whatever James wanted to do, she would just follow along. This made her feel very sweet, but now James was giving her even more. Just thinking about going to see movies and shopping with James made her happy enough to feel like she could fly.

Knowing that Emma didn’t have any particular ideas at this moment, James took her out to the streets to shop. It wasn’t too late, and the shops in the commercial street were still open. James bought Emma a few pieces of clothing.

Emma was very reluctant to accept them; these clothes had cost more than two thousand, which for her was quite extravagant.

"Silly girl, aren’t you my girlfriend? When you dress up beautifully, it also makes me feel happy. A woman adorns herself for the man who cherishes her. You should know this," James teased.

Emma said with a pinch of heartache, "But this is spending too much. You still have to give me money for university and buy me clothes; it’s already a lot."

James Brown, with his arm around Emma’s shoulder, said with a smile, "Don’t worry, your Big Brother Brown isn’t the type to pretend to be well-off when he isn’t. If I didn’t have the money, I wouldn’t squander it frivolously. I can’t be so foolish as to buy you clothes and then end up without money to pay the rent or for food, right?"

Leaning into James’s embrace, Emma said softly as they walked slowly forward, "Big Brother Brown, we should still spend with a plan, and I really don’t need much. Don’t spend too much on me in the future."

James Brown knew Emma was thrifty and that she really couldn’t accept spending too much money. Even if he were to give her all that money, she wouldn’t be willing to spend it. Moreover, she would feel a huge burden with too much money. Therefore, James didn’t tell Emma about his actual wealth. The two of them continued to live their peaceful lives, and the thought of earning money and living together in the future was indeed a happy prospect.

Around nine, James Brown and Emma prepared to return. Having driven a bit, James wanted to buy some fruit. Knowing there was a small street nearby with a night market that sold many things, he parked the car nearby and walked in with Emma.

But as they just reached the entrance of the street, they saw chaos inside, filled with curses and screams.

Emma immediately gripped James’s hand tightly out of nervousness, while James frowned and, leading Emma, walked towards the commotion. They soon saw what was happening.

It was a fight; on one side were three people armed with iron pipes and such, and on the other, two people, barehanded, were getting the worst of it. Nearby were two cars, one a BMW worth around a million, and the other a taxi, both stuck together as if there had been a collision.

James stood there for a moment and quickly understood what was going on. The two cars had collided, and it was difficult to determine who was at fault. But in such a street, one generally wouldn’t drive in. If one did drive in, it would mean they were looking for trouble.

At that moment, James also saw an acquaintance, Emily Jenkins, the flight attendant neighbor. She was recording with her phone, although it was unclear whether she was simply watching the spectacle or gathering evidence.

The police car arrived with sirens blaring, and several officers jumped out, finally stopping the fight.

"What’s going on?" one officer asked coldly as he looked at both parties, but when he saw one of the attackers, the officer’s expression changed instantly, he nodded slightly but did not speak to that person.

The man simply took out a cigarette and lit it, paying no mind to the police’s arrival.

The beaten man, holding his forehead and covered in blood, urgently said, "Officer, their car forced its way through and scraped my taxi. They got out and blamed me, then they assaulted me."

The officer frowned and said, "You all get in the car to the police station to talk."

The beaten man hurried into the police car, while the attackers did not get into the police car but got into their own vehicle and followed behind.

"Hey, officer, I have evidence," Emily Jenkins shouted at this moment. The police car hadn’t sped off and should have heard Emily’s voice, but it didn’t stop and simply drove away.

As the crowd dispersed, Emily Jenkins saw James Brown and rushed over, saying urgently, "Big Brother Brown, do you have a car? Let’s catch up to them quickly. I have evidence in my hands; otherwise, the taxi driver will suffer a huge loss."
