Chapter 156: Chapter 156 Uncle, I Will Not Let You Go
James Brown laughed, "Well then, come on over, I’ll cook for you." He had just finished cooking and had hardly eaten a few bites when the thought of Melody Yoody joining him for dinner seemed like a very pleasant prospect.
"No sincerity. If you wanted to invite me for dinner, why didn’t you call me earlier?"
"I didn’t want to disturb you at work. What if you were having dinner with some leader and my call negatively impacted you?"
"James, I really appreciate you understanding me. I was afraid you would get angry with me over this." Melody’s tone suddenly became gentle.
James’s tone was equally gentle as he said, "Although I have a bit of a macho streak, liking you means having enough trust in you, right?"
"Thank you. Even though a lot has changed over the years, I can still feel that you treat me as well as you did before."
"If I don’t treat you well, who else would I treat well? You are the woman I’ve liked most in my life."
When James Brown said such sincere words to a woman, it was definitely meant only for Melody Yoody. If it were anyone else, it would likely have been flirtation or just teasing, like how he spoke with Joan Wilson.
At that moment, James seemed to have returned to the days of his first love. Talking to Melody on the phone was incredibly sweet, to the point that he even forgot about Sarah Grandy at home.
"Uncle, who are you chatting with?" Sarah Grandy’s voice suddenly rang in James’s ear.
James was in the midst of an engrossing conversation and jumped in surprise; immediately, Melody’s voice came through from the other end, "Who’s over at your place?"
James turned his head and glared at Sarah, laughing, "Just a kid who ran away from home and sought refuge at my place. I was just about to send her back."
"Oh, make sure to send her back quickly. Kids are rebellious, just like we were at that age, but you can’t let her develop the habit of thinking she has somewhere to rely on when she leaves home. You definitely shouldn’t let her spend the night at your place."
"Uncle, where did you throw my Underwear? Damn it, Uncle, you were quick to take them off, but now they’re gone," Sarah suddenly jumped next to James and yelled out.
James kicked Sarah onto the sofa with one foot, and as she cried out in midair, she only realized she was fine after landing on the sofa. She made a face at James but didn’t dare to bother him again.
But the damage was done. Hearing Sarah’s shout, Melody immediately became angry, "James Brown, what do you mean by this?"
Hearing Melody’s accusatory tone, James, despite knowing she was just nervous for him, still felt a bit off and sighed, "She’s just causing trouble on purpose."
"Is that so? How old is she?"
"She must be a senior in high school by now."
"A high school senior... We were together when we were that age. A girl that age is pretty grown up. After all these years, you still like teenagers. I’m really impressed by your taste."
"Heh, you don’t believe me, do you?" James’s tone revealed a hint of dejection.
Melody suddenly felt a twinge in her heart, and her annoyance towards James largely dissipated. Her tone also softened, "James, I’m not saying I don’t trust you, but you should understand that when a woman suddenly hears another girl’s voice next to her man and says such things, it’s normal to react strongly."
Melody’s attempt to smooth things over made James’s displeasure disappear, and he spoke softly, "Yes, I understand you. Since I’ve promised you, I won’t mess around with other women."
"Mhm, I know you’re a man of your word. What you promise, you will do."
"Alright, I’ll sort her out first, and then I’ll call you."
After hanging up the phone, James approached Sarah without any anger on his face, but his gaze was a bit too calm.
That look made Sarah very nervous, and she involuntarily backed away until she was cornered on the sofa, where she stammered, "Uncle, I... I was just joking. Don’t be mad, okay?"
"I know, but now that your joke is over, isn’t it time for you to leave?"
Sarah shook her head emphatically, "Uncle, I won’t go. If you kick me out, I’ll have to sleep on the streets tonight, get caught by bad guys, and be raped and murdered—over and over again."
James said irritably, "Even if you were raped Fourteen dollars times and killed a thousand times, it wouldn’t have anything to do with me. You better leave before I lose my temper, or else don’t blame me for being rude."
Sarah Grandy’s cheeks puffed out twice before she suddenly straightened her body and said, "Well then, don’t hold back, are you really so heartless as to watch me wander the streets?"
"I have no qualms about it; everyone must be responsible for their own actions. If you want to run away from home, then run away. My place is not your safe haven."
"You... you... fine! I’ll leave, is that not enough for you? You old jerk, you’re going to regret this, you will definitely regret this." Sarah Grandy jumped up, grabbed her bag, and headed towards the door.
She thought that once she left, James Brown would soften and stop her, but until she walked out of the door, he didn’t say a word. What infuriated her the most was that as soon as she walked out of the door, he closed it behind her with a bang.
"You old jerk, are you really letting me go? You really won’t keep me?" Sarah Grandy turned around and started pounding on James’s door crazily.
However, there was no response from inside the room.
"James Brown, you’re going to regret this, you definitely will, I’ll make sure you pay for not taking me in." After throwing out this harsh statement, Sarah Grandy angrily turned around and left.
As soon as Sarah Grandy got out of the elevator, she saw Joan Wilson. Joan, having been frightened away by James earlier, thought more about it and felt something was wrong. He usually didn’t show any interest in her, but his actions earlier were obviously meant to scare her off so she would forget to ask the questions she had in mind, which made her really angry with James. Now she was back to settle the score.
Unexpectedly she saw Sarah Grandy there, and knowing that this high school girl must have been there for James, and seeing Sarah Grandy’s state, Joan frowned and asked, "Sarah Grandy, where are you going?"
Sarah Grandy flung her arm and said, "Where I go is none of your business."
Joan Wilson immediately stepped forward and said, "You’re not in a good state, I must take you home."
"I’m not going home. Can you control that?"
Joan’s face darkened as she said, "I’m a police officer, of course I have a right to intervene. You must go home now."
"Being a police officer is so great, huh? Did I break the law?" Sarah’s temper was really flaring, and she glared at Joan Wilson as she yelled.
Joan Wilson’s face darkened, "Did you get taken advantage of at James Brown’s place? If so, tell me, and I will certainly arrest him."
Sarah Grandy was already furious but hearing Joan say this, she suddenly had an idea and put on a bitter face, sadly saying, "Yes, he raped me, go arrest him."
When Sarah Grandy had run away from home, she had cried, and she had been made to cry several times at James’s house, so her eyes were still somewhat swollen. When she said these words in such a wronged tone, she looked exactly like a young lady who had been bullied.
Joan was filled with righteous indignation and angrily said, "Don’t be afraid. If he dare to do such a beastly act, I will make sure he is brought to justice. Let’s go upstairs and find him." At this point, Joan was still not so impulsive. She wanted to confront James first, instead of directly notifying the station to arrest someone. She also remembered that James had never harmed her before, and the last time he even let her drive Sarah Grandy away, seemingly uninterested in such a young girl. Another thing, she felt that Sarah Grandy was quite cunning and not entirely trustworthy.
"I won’t go. If I go there, he will definitely beat me. I don’t want to go there." Sarah Grandy shook her head vigorously, looking not just like she had been assaulted but also like she had been abused.
"Don’t worry, I’m a police officer, and I’ll protect you," Joan Wilson said, grabbing Sarah’s arm and heading towards the elevator.
Sarah finally followed Joan into the elevator with a wronged expression. As soon as they entered the elevator, Joan’s phone rang. It was actually James calling. She answered, "What’s the matter?"
"Officer Monaghan, are you near my place?"
"I’m in the elevator right now, about to reach your place."
"Ugh, did you see Sarah Grandy? That girl ran away from home and came here. I just made her leave, and now she’s definitely not in the right state of mind. Please take her home."
The volume on Joan’s earpiece was not loud, as it was her habit to prevent others from hearing her phone conversations. The elevator space was not big, but Sarah Grandy couldn’t hear what James was saying.
With James saying that, Joan knew Sarah was lying; otherwise, James would definitely not have asked her, a police officer, to take care of Sarah. However, why should she do whatever James asks? She had questions for him, and that jerk had said disgusting words to scare her away.
Also, that jerk had taken advantage of her last time; her grievances had not been avenged, and he expected her to be at his beck and call. He was dreaming.
"Officer Monaghan, hurry down, you should still be able to catch up," James urged again.
Joan Wilson snorted and pulled Sarah out of the elevator, "Open the door, I’m at your doorstep." And at that moment, she had made up her mind to take her revenge on James Brown, the bastard.
