Chapter 110: Chapter 110 Classmate’s Wedding

At that moment, Charlotte Davis, their manager, came over to toast, and then handed a membership card to James Brown with both hands. This made Alice Brown and Jennifer Hog quite envious. They also longed to possess such a membership card, but with their capabilities, getting their hands on one was simply impossible.

"Well, then, we’re relying on the two of you for some of our company’s promotion," said Lucy Campbell as they neared the end of their meal and she broached the matter at hand.

Alice Brown and Jennifer Hog hurried to agree in unison, because Lucy Campbell had offered them a substantial reward. Moreover, becoming friends with a boss of such stature was what they valued the most.

After the meal, James Brown sang in the private room with the others. Lucy Campbell directly admitted she couldn’t sing and just sat watching the trio, while James Brown sang joyously with the two beautiful hosts, who flirted with him now and then.

James Brown, however, was not one to reject such advances; easy pickings delivered to your doorstep should not go unclaimed. All he had to do was ensure that things didn’t end up in bed.

It was past eleven o’clock when the four of them left. Before leaving, Alice Brown and Jennifer Hog got James Brown’s phone number and saved their numbers in his phone as well.

However, they were surprised by James Brown’s few-dollar phone, but they didn’t doubt his identity was fake, because Lucy Campbell had already mentioned that James Brown had been living a low-profile life in YODC City for a few years. Plus, when it came to paying the bill, James Brown used a card, and this dinner cost over ten thousand, not something an ordinary person could afford.

Sitting in the car on the ride back, Lucy Campbell said with a playful smile, "I noticed those two beautiful hosts seemed quite interested in you. A simple gesture from you, and they’d probably go out and book a room with you."

James Brown lit a cigarette, rolled down the window—it was warm in April, and the open window wasn’t cold—took a drag, and then gently smiled, "Such women, they don’t interest me. I can’t give them anything."

Lucy Campbell leaned slightly to look at James Brown. She usually didn’t like men smoking, but she found James Brown’s smoking somewhat masculine. Plus, he was smoking the high-grade cigarettes she had provided, which pleased her. She laughed and said, "What they want is nothing more than fame and wealth. If you wanted to, I don’t think it would be a problem."

"It’s unnecessary. I wouldn’t put so much effort into getting into bed with some woman unless I truly fell in love with someone one day."

Lucy Campbell’s eyes lit up, "I didn’t expect you to be so conservative about relationships."

James Brown chuckled, "Relationships, that’s a lifetime thing. It’s not something to play with. Besides, I can’t afford to play that game."

Lucy Campbell was silent, wearing a faint smile, occasionally glancing at him. Although James Brown didn’t turn his head, he could feel her gaze. The attention from Lucy Campbell gave him an unexpectedly chilly feeling.

"Could it be she’s fallen for me?" James Brown thought, but promptly dismissed the idea. Even as self-loving as he was, he didn’t believe a woman like Lucy Campbell could fall for him. It was more likely that she wanted to use him.

Arriving back in the neighborhood, Lucy Campbell went directly to her home without saying much more to James Brown.

The weekend arrived quickly, and James Brown was to attend his high school classmate John Stephens’ wedding. The wedding was at nine o’clock on Saturday morning, but John Stephens had called James Brown on Thursday, asking him to come over on Friday evening when most classmates would be gathering. James Brown happily agreed.

Friday evening, James Brown took a taxi to a mid-range restaurant. They were meeting there first this evening, then having dinner; afterwards, they’d arrange accommodations for everyone, so they could all enjoy a lively reunion.

Having not seen these old classmates for many years, James Brown was quite keen on the gathering. There was also the possibility of seeing someone who had haunted his dreams, and the thought of her stirred indescribable feelings within him. He knew that after all these years, he hadn’t managed to forget her and yet, he was somewhat reluctant to face her.

And James Brown was aware that the reason he hadn’t accepted the affections of any woman was because of her.

When James Brown arrived at the restaurant it was almost six, and by then most people had already arrived. When he walked in, no one recognized him until David Johnson introduced him as their classmate.

During high school, James Brown hadn’t stood out much, and his academic performance was mediocre. Moreover, the experiences of the past years had matured him slightly beyond his actual age and completely transformed his temperament. It was normal that no one recognized him. The only reason David Johnson did, was because he was James Brown’s high school desk mate with a particularly strong memory of him.

"James Brown, why did you come so late, dude?" David Johnson clapped James Brown’s shoulder and beckoned him to sit next to him.

They were in a small hall with four tables, most already filled with people. James Brown glanced around but didn’t see the woman who haunted his dreams. He felt disappointed, yet somewhat relieved. He truly didn’t know how to face her—she was the only woman in the world who could make him feel this way.

Chuckling, James Brown said, "I didn’t have a choice. The boss had an issue; I had to wait for her."

"James Brown, spending time with the boss, it seems like you’re doing pretty well," a female classmate winked at James Brown.

James Brown couldn’t remember what her name was, but he at least had some impression of her and said with a smile, "Me, doing well? I’m just driving the boss around. I’m nothing but a driver."

Everyone’s expression changed slightly, some disdainful, others indifferent. That’s reality for you, even at a class reunion, a capable person always receives everyone’s adoration, while the incapable can only watch from the sidelines.

James Brown didn’t mind this and sat down with interest to watch everyone engaging in animated conversations. Among these classmates were a few who were doing quite well, like David Johnson, working at the town government, with a job as a civil servant that many envied. And a couple who had started businesses thanks to their fathers were also lavished with compliments.

But the majority of the classmates were just average, either working at some company or running a small business. Everyone casually inquired about each other’s income and job nature without any reservations.

Earning a few thousand dollars a month, James ranked about average among his classmates, not outstanding nor dismissive, not the focus of attention nor looked down upon.

As they were talking, James’s phone rang. The caller ID showed Alice Brown’s name, and he casually answered.

"Mr. Brown, it’s Alice Brown." Alice’s voice was very pleasant, befitting her status as a renowned presenter.

James replied cheerfully, "I can tell. Is there something you need, Miss Brown?"

Alice chuckled lightly and asked, "Mr. Brown, do you have time tonight?"

Upon hearing this, James knew what she meant and answered, "Sorry, I have a friend’s wedding to attend tonight, so I’m not available."

"That’s okay, we can meet up some other time if you’re free. Or do you need us to make an appearance or something?" In Alice’s eyes, a person like James surely mingled with high society, and attending their events could be a great opportunity.

"Thanks for the offer, Miss Brown, but we’re just getting together for a meal."

"I won’t disturb you then, Mr. Brown. But don’t forget to call me when you’re free. Laura and I will definitely be at your beck and call."

Listening to Alice’s seductive voice, James felt a stir in his heart. He could clearly understand the implication in her words; Alice probably worried that going alone wouldn’t pique his interest and opted to team up with another person. If he really went for it, it would undoubtedly be quite thrilling.

If they were ordinary people, James might have considered it, but as they were both seeking something from him, and he wasn’t really a playboy, he had no intentions towards them.

Moreover, in this setting, James had no mood to indulge. Watching his classmates, his mind kept returning to one person, and no other woman, no matter how beautiful, could spark his interest, not even the most beautiful woman in SSUP Country, Lucy Campbell.

After declining Alice’s invitation, James put away his phone. David Johnson leaned in and asked, "Your girlfriend?"

James replied with a smile, "No, just a friend."

"What kind of friend? With a voice that nice, she must be pretty too, right? You should go for it, James." Amy Smith, a lively girl sitting on his other side, wasn’t particularly beautiful but knew how to make herself appealing. She attracted quite a bit of attention from their classmates and now teased James humorously.

James laughed and said, "Stop it, she’s a TV presenter. I couldn’t possibly reach that high."

"A TV presenter, who is it?" Amy immediately asked with curiosity.

"Alice Brown," James answered honestly.

"Alice Brown?" Amy’s eyes widened, and she burst out laughing, slapping James on the shoulder and exclaiming, "James Brown... you’re hilarious... Alice Brown is the most famous presenter in YODC City, and you’re saying she called you? I even heard you turn her down; who do you think you are, some rich tycoon?"

The other classmates also laughed heartily, with someone chiming in, "James, you’re quite the comedian now, huh? Who do you think Alice Brown is?"

"Exactly, Alice and Jennifer Hog are the golden pair of YODC City TV Station, with countless fans. Only wealthy playboys pursue them. People like us shouldn’t even dream of it."

"James, if you’re going to boast, at least make it believable. If you were some big shot, we might buy it, but you’re just a junior employee. How can we believe such a tale?" A discordant voice rose, drawing everyone’s gaze to the speaker.

They were all classmates, and it was fine to joke around usually, but such words were overtly offensive, especially with the clear undertone of looking down on James. It would make anyone uncomfortable to hear.
