The Supreme Soldier in the City -
Chapter 109 Host
Chapter 109: Chapter 109 Host
In the car, James Brown learned about the role he was now supposed to play—a wealthy scion with a hefty fortune, still unmarried. He had never wanted to take over the family business, instead loafing around in YODC City. But now that Lucy Campbell was starting her business here, he had no choice but to come over and help.
This provided a plausible reason for James Brown’s presence in YODC City. Even if some of the heavy hitters in YODC City recognized Lucy Campbell and saw her together with James Brown, it would still make sense. Clearly, Lucy had thought everything through.
At this moment, however, James Brown gave Lucy Campbell a wry look and said, "Why do I feel like you’ve lured me into your pirate ship?"
Lucy Campbell giggled and responded, "Who else do I trust in YODC City if not you? If you don’t help me, who will?"
"My heavens, if others knew that you, Lucy Campbell, could be so willful, I wonder how many hearts would be shattered."
"I’m a girl, aren’t I? Being willful is in our nature, do you have a problem with that?"
"No complaints, no complaints!" James Brown also laughed heartily, finding this side of Lucy Campbell truer and more relaxing for him.
As for James Brown, playing the role of a rich young master was a breeze, something Lucy Campbell clearly understood as well, so she didn’t elaborate on that aspect.
At seven o’clock, James Brown and Lucy Campbell arrived at the very famous L Hotel in YODC City. The establishment operated on a membership system; without a membership card, unless accompanied by a member, it was pretty much impossible to get in.
And the annual membership fee was seventy thousand dollars, and that was just for the membership. Dining there was also extremely expensive, and ordinary rich people couldn’t afford to frequent it.
Yet such an exclusive venue only made people more eager to enter, as it was a symbol of status and a demonstration of power. As a result, the business of L Hotel was surprisingly good.
Lucy Campbell had a membership card. After showing it at the door, they entered. James Brown glanced around; such an establishment, while premier in YODC City, was quite inferior compared to those in the capital of SSUP. When he was in the capital of SSUP, he frequently visited such places—not for enjoyment but for missions.
He also surveyed the exits and some of the furnishings, as being out with Lucy Campbell meant he had to ensure her safety. Should any unexpected situations arise, he had to be able to get her out of there in the shortest time possible.
Lucy Campbell took James Brown to the manager’s office. The manager, a woman in her thirties named Charlotte Davis, was astute and efficient, and she warmly greeted Lucy Campbell and James Brown.
After sitting down, Lucy Campbell spoke, "Manager Davis, this is my cousin, James Brown. He’s always kept a low profile living in YODC City. Now that I’ve come here to do business, I managed to enlist his help. He’ll be frequenting such venues from now on, so could you arrange a membership card for my cousin too?"
Charlotte Davis took another look at James Brown, evidently surprised that such a person had been hidden in YODC City. However, her face didn’t show it, and she enthusiastically said, "Miss Campbell’s cousin, that’s quite a notable figure! I can’t believe I didn’t know about him before; this is truly an oversight on my part. I will arrange to have one made right away. Miss Campbell, you go about your business; I’ll deliver Mr. Brown’s membership card personally in a bit."
After a short conversation with Charlotte Davis, they went to a private room on the fifth floor. The room, measuring fifty or sixty square meters, had a dining table that wasn’t very large, seating only eight people. Silver tableware was displayed on the table, showcasing opulence.
Furthermore, the room had a circle of sofas, a bed, and a spacious bathroom with a large bathtub. This place wasn’t just for dining but also for resting. Even a small cocktail party could easily be hosted in the middle area.
They both sat down on a sofa, and James Brown said cheerfully, "The life of the rich really is different. Having dinner here with two beauties, anything can happen."
Lucy Campbell gave James Brown a reproachful glance and said, "There will be two celebrities coming later. If you want to discreetly hook up with them, I think they’d be willing."
"Heh, better not. What would I do if that happened? If they got attached to me, I wouldn’t be able to support them. Wouldn’t that be asking for trouble?"
Lucy Campbell chuckled and replied, "No problem, I’ll support them for you."
Of course, James Brown didn’t believe Lucy Campbell was serious and laughed, "What would I be then? You support me, and then I go support others?"
Lucy Campbell giggled and said, "Someone like you, I wouldn’t dare support. Wouldn’t that be disrespectful to you?"
Lucy Campbell had a way of speaking that put people at ease. James Brown knew that although he had previously been the second-in-command of the Hawk Squad with considerable power, his status still fell far short in the eyes of someone like Lucy Campbell. Nevertheless, Lucy always showed him respect, which made it clear she had a great capacity for leadership—the kind that invariably secured the undying loyalty of those who worked for her.
They had barely exchanged a few words when there was a knock at the door. Lucy said, "Come in," and two fashionably dressed, tall and attractive women entered.
Lucy and James both stood up, and the two women quickly walked over to them, smiling broadly and saying, "Hello, Miss Campbell!" But when they turned to James, they seemed unsure how to greet him.
Lucy gave a slight smile and said, "This is my cousin James Brown. Cousin, this is Alice Brown, and this is Jennifer Hog, both well-known hosts from YODC City TV Station."
For the average person, being a TV station host was quite a reputable position, though there was a distinction between local, provincial, and national broadcasters. Alice and Jennifer were merely local hosts with a bit of fame in YODC City, usually attending some municipal events, and then only for average businesses. After all, large conglomerates and corporations would normally seek out celebrities, not them. For these two, there wasn’t much room for career advancement left in YODC City.
When Lucy sought them out this time, they were thrilled. Although Lucy didn’t approach them in the name of her corporation, the investment scale of seventy thousand dollars was already considerable enough to command respect. And since James was Lucy’s cousin, it was clear he was from a wealthy second generation.
Knowing that they were being approached by a beautiful woman like Lucy made Alice and Jennifer a bit nervous, as their own looks held no sway over her. But seeing a man like James present filled them with excitement; after all, to any man, their beauty would undoubtedly be an advantage.
Next to Lucy, however, the confidence they derived from their beauty vanished entirely. Lucy’s attractiveness simply overshadowed theirs, and next to her, they felt like ugly ducklings. So, in the company of Lucy and James, they seemed somewhat uneasy.
"Hello, Mr. Brown!" They each gave James a handshake before sitting down politely on a sofa to the side.
Lucy sat next to James and gave him a light nudge with her elbow, saying, "Cousin, don’t tell me you’re not familiar with two famous TV hosts?"
James chuckled and replied, "You’re actually right, I don’t watch TV usually. But I must say, both the beautiful hosts have such charm. If I had known you earlier, I would have become your fan."
Alice and Jennifer both giggled. Alice said, "Please, Mr. Brown, don’t tease us. A person like you would have celebrities flocking to you with just a wave of your hand. You couldn’t possibly be our fan."
Jennifer added, "We didn’t know Mr. Brown was in YODC City. Had we known, we would have come to curry favor with you long ago."
As hosts, their greatest skill was naturally their gift of gab. Initially a bit stiff, upon seeing that neither James nor Lucy were arrogant, they soon relaxed and played to their strengths: the conversation was humorous and witty, and the atmosphere became increasingly comfortable.
In reality, both of them hoped to entice James; marrying into wealth would be ideal, but even if they couldn’t, gaining his favor and being associated with him would make their career progression in this circle, or whatever else they chose to do, much more efficient.
After having been in this business for a while, they were no longer the untainted girls untouched by the world’s grime—they had long been assimilated by society.
After a while of conversation and once the meal was served, Alice and Jennifer frequently toasted Lucy and James, with their primary focus evidently being James.
Lucy didn’t interject but watched James quietly. She was curious to see how he, as a man, would react and respond to such a situation. Although she had developed genuine feelings for James after he saved her, she remained a very rational woman. Mainly, she needed to see if James truly suited her and met her criteria in other aspects. In essence, the two TV hosts were a test she had devised for James.
Unaware of Lucy’s motives, James took great pleasure in dining and chatting with two such beautiful women, and from their conversation, he could tell they were keen on impressing him.
James wasn’t averse to women like them; he wouldn’t object to a no-strings-attached fling, but this wasn’t his aim given their obvious intentions, which contradicted his principles. He preferred situations without consequences, just seeking mutual enjoyment.
Engaging with the two hosts could lead to them expecting significant benefits from him later, and currently, he had nothing to offer them. Moreover, it wasn’t his style to pursue such matters. So, while the interaction was pleasant, James remained courteous and did not show any lecherous behavior.
This was something Lucy found quite satisfying.
