Chapter 106: Chapter 106 Emily Lopez is Coming
James Brown was buying groceries when Gina Lopez was lying on the couch with her eyes closed, sound asleep.
Luckily, when James brought Gina home earlier, he had taken her house keys just in case; otherwise, knocking on the door would have woken her up.
After putting away the groceries in the kitchen, he took a blanket and gently covered Gina, then gave her another look. Even in sleep, her brow was furrowed, clearly troubled by some vexing issue.
James shook his head. Being too ambitious wasn’t really a good thing for a woman; it just made life too exhausting. On this point, his view coincided with that of Emily Lopez.
Lately, Gina hadn’t mentioned Emily, seeming to no longer harbor any suspicions, but having not chatted with her for a while, James suddenly found himself missing Emily.
He decided to start cooking first and then finished cleaning up the vegetables. Today’s meal consisted of just a few stir-fries, which could be whipped up in minutes, so he would wait until the rice was done before starting. With nothing else to do at the moment, he sat down on the living room sofa, picked up the phone, and dialed Emily Lopez’s number.
"Sis... why did you think to call me today?"
"I’m not your sister, I’m your brother-in-law," James replied with a chuckle, his voice low.
"Ah! Brother-in-law, you actually remembered me?" Emily sounded pleasantly surprised.
James let out a soft laugh and said, "How could I not remember you? You’re Gina’s sister, after all."
"Stop it, you haven’t even managed to win over my sister yet."
James knew that Emily was referring to not having taken Gina’s virginity and felt slightly embarrassed, quickly responding, "I’m just respecting your sister."
"Let’s not talk about that. Isn’t my sister at home?"
"She is, but she has fallen asleep. She’s been stressed with too much work at the company these days."
"Oh, then let her sleep. Brother-in-law, I’m thinking of running away from home."
Emily’s leap in conversation caught James off guard for a moment, and he instinctively asked, "What did you say?"
"I said I want to run away from home. If I stay any longer, I’ll go mad. My mom keeps nagging me every day, ah, to find a boyfriend, to get married. You and my sister are driving me to my grave."
James couldn’t help but smile and said, "Then just find one."
"There’s no one suitable, but I don’t care anymore. I’ll come stay at your place to lay low for a bit in a few days. You won’t mind me ruining your alone time with Gina, will you?"
James felt a headache coming on at the thought of having to deal with Emily visiting, but he couldn’t refuse her at this point and quickly agreed, "Sure, come on over. Gina and I will make sure you have a good time."
"My sister, can I count on her?"
"Oh, good point. Then let your brother-in-law take good care of you. That should do, right?"
"That’s more like it. I’ve only been to YODC City once, and my sister didn’t spend any time with me. I nearly died of boredom. This time, you have to show me around properly."
"Okay, but I’m not familiar with this place myself. After being away for seven or eight years, everything has changed. It’s not the YODC City I remember."
"At least you’ll be better than me. It’s settled then, but I can’t say for sure which day I’ll show up. You better be prepared."
"It would be best if you gave me a heads-up before coming. Gina’s busy these days, and I have a lot on my plate too. I’ll need to ask for time off in advance, otherwise, I might be out too, and you might end up bored again."
"Okay, okay, I’ll call you."
After a few more words, James saw that Gina had opened her eyes, so he handed the phone to her. After speaking with Emily for a short while, Gina hung up. The twin sisters seemed to have little in common; their phone calls never lasted more than three minutes.
"What did Emily say just now?" Gina sat up and, noticing the blanket on her, spoke to James in a gentle tone.
"Emily said she wants to run away from home, and she’ll be coming over to our place to stay for a few days," James replied.
Gina frowned slightly and asked, "Did you agree?"
"Dare I not agree?" James countered.
Knowing that when Emily set her mind to something, not even their parents could dissuade her, Gina said with a headache, "So what do we do when she comes?"
"We’ll do whatever needs to be done. I’ll take her out to have some fun. You can drive yourself."
"I’m fine with driving, but if she’s staying here, then you..."
With a sense of resignation, James admitted, "Then there’s no choice. I’ll just have to stay at your place for a few days longer."
Gina Lopez originally wanted to say that it would be somewhat awkward for them to live together in the same bed again, but seeing James Brown’s calm demeanor, she relaxed and said with a smile, "Yes, I’ll have to trouble you to stay at my place for a few days again. Oh, and you need to bring some of your clothes. After all, we’re cohabiting, and it wouldn’t make sense for you not to have your personal belongings at my house."
"Okay, I’ll go and get some," James Brown replied cheerfully.
"Just bring a few. Later we’ll go shopping for you so that you have things at home. If you’re not here and Emily comes over, I’ll have an explanation."
"Hehe, seems like I’m saving money again."
"You’re doing me a favor, it’s only right."
During the period when Gina Lopez was being driven around by James Brown, they became more familiar with each other, and her way of speaking to him was no longer as cold as before.
"Alright, I’ll go cook the vegetables. Dinner will be ready soon."
Watching James Brown walk into the kitchen, Gina Lopez stood up as well, washed her hands, and went to the kitchen doorway. Seeing him busily working inside, she felt a sense of happiness welling up in her heart.
After they had eaten, Gina Lopez and James Brown went shopping together. James was still wearing his work clothes, while Gina was dressed in light gray sportswear and sneakers. Without her professional outfits and high heels, Gina no longer had an air of haughtiness and aloofness; instead, she exuded a girl’s tranquility and ease.
They only browsed the men’s clothing section, picking out two sets of spring clothes for James, and then moved on to the underwear section.
Gina had accompanied James to buy underwear before. Although she still felt a bit embarrassed, she was able to face the situation calmly this time.
And Gina couldn’t deny that James, the guy in question, really had a great figure. Even the models on the packaging boxes couldn’t compete with the masculinity James exuded when he wore them.
"This one is nice." Gina picked up a pair of underwear, held it up to James’ hips, and then told the sales clerk the size. She had an excellent memory, having bought them for James previously, and had remembered the size. And as a boss, she was used to making decisions; she was now making decisions for James as well.
However, when the two turned around, they saw someone they both knew: the logistics worker, Emily Smith. Emily’s eyes were exaggeratedly wide, her mouth gaping enough to fit an egg.
James and Gina exchanged glances, then greeted Emily with a smile, "Ms. Smith, what a coincidence."
"Ah ah!" Emily finally closed her mouth, looking at them with an extremely unnatural expression, "Yes, yes, such a coincidence. Mr. Brown, hello."
Gina hadn’t expected to run into a colleague from the company here, and in the men’s underwear section no less. It wasn’t easy to explain such a situation, so she just nodded at Emily, deciding not to explain anything.
James smiled and said, "Buying underwear for your husband?"
"Yes, yes," Emily rapidly agreed, and then gave James an ambiguous smile, "I won’t disturb you two, I’ll be going now."
This was when Gina said, "I don’t want to hear rumors about me and James at the company."
Emily jumped in fright and hurriedly replied, "Ms. Lopez, rest assured, I won’t talk. My lips are sealed."
Gina nodded, and like receiving reprieve, Emily quickly left, not even purchasing the underwear for her husband anymore. After bumping into Gina Lopez and James Brown in that section, and having Gina deliberately take up her attention, Emily felt it was best to leave the awkward situation.
However, after leaving the underwear area, Emily couldn’t help but look back. She saw James and Gina still browsing inside, which surprised her greatly. She was convinced that Gina must be James’ girlfriend; otherwise, how could Gina be buying underwear for James, and even know his size?
No wonder James had rejected Sarah. With a boss like Gina as his girlfriend, naturally, he couldn’t afford to be interested in other girls. But James, that guy, was really something for being able to win over the boss herself.
Meanwhile, James was talking with Gina.
"We’ll have to explain to Ms. Smith tomorrow when we’re at work."
"There’s no need," Gina shook her head, "this kind of thing can’t be clearly explained. The more you try to explain, the more she will be convinced it’s true. It’s better not to explain at all."
"But... if everyone in the company knows you’re my girlfriend, that would..."
Gina said nonchalantly, "Then let them talk. It will keep others from bothering me anyway."
James rolled his eyes, "Ms. Lopez, you might not care, but with you as my girlfriend, how am I supposed to find a girlfriend?"
Gina was slightly choked up, annoyed that this guy was only thinking about his own issues. She had thought he was being considerate of her. Also, somewhere inside she felt a little indignant, "Am I such an embarrassment to you as a girlfriend?"
"Boss, it’s not real. You might not want a boyfriend, but I still want to date girls."
"Hmph, don’t you have Sunny? You shouldn’t be going after other girls anyway. Consider me holding a place for Sunny to keep you from being fickle. Yes, that’s the reason." Gina’s face showed a triumphant smile.
James was at a loss for words, "Ms. Lopez, you can’t be serious?"
"What do you mean I can’t be serious? That’s exactly how it is. Tonight, I’ll have Sunny come over to stay. You better behave yourself." Saying this, Gina really took out her phone and called Sunny Nguyen.
This left James genuinely frustrated. Although Sunny had divorced, the allure of a mature woman was undeniably compelling. Yet, James really hadn’t thought about having a romantic fling with Sunny. Gina meddling in this way was indeed quite troublesome.
