Chapter 103: Chapter 103 My Backer is Officer Monaghan
James Brown, though still nursing some wounds on his leg, would have easily taken care of these henchmen. However, glancing at a distance, Helen Wilson was walking towards him. He immediately started to clumsily dodge and shout, "Help! Help!"
Helen Wilson’s past few days had been somewhat indescribable. It seemed like she should be happy, as she was now the deputy director and no longer just a beat cop. To become a deputy director so soon after starting her job was rare in the entire system, to the point that it might make others think she was the offspring of an official.
Yet, she could not muster happiness. Becoming deputy director had exposed her to things she had previously been unaware of, things she found intolerable, and even some matters she believed were unbefitting for a police officer to be involved in.
The main issue was that she felt she shouldn’t have become deputy director. It wasn’t due to her own abilities but rather because of the assistance of that mysterious man that she had been credited with achievements.
Today, the owner of a casino resort had invited her to dinner. She didn’t want to go, but since Director Lewis was attending and had specifically requested her presence, she begrudgingly went. And that meal was even more unpleasant for her. She had heard rumors of the casino resort owner’s involvement with the underworld. If even she was aware of it, how could Director Lewis not know? Yet, the director was treating the man like a brother, as if they were so close that they could wear the same pair of trousers.
Though Helen Wilson was a police officer with a strong sense of justice, she knew that with her experience and current capabilities, it was impossible for her to do anything about the casino owner. Also, having just been promoted to deputy director, it would be unwise to get on Director Lewis’s bad side, making it difficult for her to continue working there. She had no choice but to play along and have dinner with them, though it left her feeling incredibly frustrated inside.
Feeling depressed on her way home, she suddenly heard someone calling for help. She immediately sprinted towards the sound and saw several people beating a man. She called out loudly, "Stop, I am a police officer!"
The title of police officer still carried weight. The men surrounding James Brown all instinctively stopped when Helen Wilson shouted at them.
"Officer Wilson, Officer Wilson, save me!" James Brown quickly rushed over and grabbed Helen Wilson’s arm, hiding behind her.
Helen Wilson then recognized that it was James Brown. She didn’t have a great impression of him, but after overdrinking the previous night and ending up at his home—where he didn’t take advantage of her—she couldn’t help but see him in a different light. Besides, even without considering their relationship, the sight of these men ganging up on one person was something she couldn’t just ignore.
Seeing that Helen Wilson was not in uniform and was a woman, the henchmen didn’t immediately run away. After exchanging glances, they directly charged towards both James Brown and Helen Wilson again.
"Stop!" Helen Wilson angrily shouted. It was outrageous for these thugs to dare to be violent in front of a police officer, but her shout failed to deter them. Although they didn’t attack her, they didn’t stop their assault on James Brown.
"Officer Wilson, save me!" James cried out from behind her.
Helen Wilson was infuriated. She kicked one of the henchmen aside, pushing him back a few steps, and then moved to confront another.
After all, Helen Wilson had some martial arts skills and the authority of a police officer, so facing several criminals, she was still imposing, especially since she had already dealt with desperate criminals with James Brown’s help before. For such petty thugs, she held no fear.
However, these henchmen were no strangers to brawls. Even though they knew Helen Wilson might be a cop, as long as they didn’t strike her, she couldn’t do much to them later, and they had been paid to deal with James Brown. They were thinking they could beat him up and then still have time to run away.
James Brown was circling around Helen Wilson at this point. Since the henchmen didn’t want to hurt her, it was quite difficult for them to get to James. There was now a bizarre stalemate.
The most exasperated person there, however, was Helen Wilson. As a police officer, having thugs commit violence right in front of her, totally disregarding her presence, was utterly humiliating. With a swift flick, she brandished her handcuffs. She wanted to apprehend one of them to see what they were really about.
Seeing the handcuffs in Helen Wilson’s hand, the formerly skeptical men no longer had any doubts. With an inherent fear of police, they took off in all directions after a brief signal among themselves.
It surprised Helen Wilson that the henchmen, who had just adamantly refused to run, were now fleeing. She wanted to chase one but couldn’t select a target quickly enough, and by the time she regained her senses, they had all run far away, putting them out of her reach.
"Officer Wilson! Officer Wilson!" James Brown’s shouting came from behind. Helen Wilson turned to see James wrestling with one of the men. Both had fallen to the ground, with James holding the man tightly.
Helen Wilson was overjoyed and rushed over, quickly cuffing the man who then instantly calmed down.
"Are you okay?" she asked James Brown, helping him up with concern.
"Ouch, that really hurt. Damn it, I don’t even know how I offended those bastards," James Brown said between clenched teeth, visibly frustrated and upset.
Seeing James looking so powerless, Helen Wilson frowned. In her heart, she admired strong individuals, like that formidable mysterious man. Compared to him, James Brown was simply incomparable—as different as heaven and earth.
Feeling ridiculous for even comparing James Brown with that mysterious man, Helen Wilson laughed at herself. After all, James was just an ordinary man, and managing to capture one of his attackers was no small feat.
"Hmph, quite bold, getting violent right on the main street." Helen Wilson pushed the guy they had caught, a 22 or 23-year-old with strangely dyed hair and several piercings in his ears, sporting a typical non-mainstream look.
The little punk sneered contemptuously and said sarcastically, "Officer sister, we were just messing around, what violence? Don’t pin a big hat on me, I’m so scared."
Helen snorted and said, "Do you think I’m blind?"
"Officer sister, nowadays everything needs evidence, don’t you know? We got the wrong guy, we didn’t mean to hit him. Can’t we even make a joke?"
The delinquent clearly had frequent run-ins with the police, slick and slippery, showing no sense of fear. Most importantly, since they hadn’t beaten James Brown badly, even if they were caught, it wouldn’t be a big deal, so he was not afraid of Helen.
Helen coldly snorted again and said, "Well then, let’s see if you were ’just kidding’."
After making a call, Helen said to James Brown, "You’ll need to come with me to give a statement shortly."
James Brown replied with a long face, "But I haven’t had dinner yet."
Helen was instantly frustrated and snorted, "Giving a statement won’t take that much time. Don’t you want to know who’s targeting you?"
James Brown said helplessly, "Who’s targeting me? What can I do about it? You’re the police. If they’ve committed a crime, you should arrest them. You’re now the deputy director."
The punk was surprised to look at Helen, starting to feel nervous. They hadn’t been afraid of Helen initially because she looked young, just a rookie cop, and those types were usually easy to handle. But if Helen was the deputy director, it would not be so simple if they offended her.
When a police car arrived and two officers jumped out, both addressing her as "Director Wilson," it completely dispelled the punk’s doubts, and he inwardly groaned at the bad luck of having messed with the wrong person.
At the police station, a male officer quickly took James’s statement, then told him to wait for further instructions. James was familiar with this procedure, but as soon as he stepped out, he saw Helen.
Helen, with a stern face in the station, had an air of police authority. "Wait for me, I’ll go with you for a medical examination."
James quickly said, "Is that necessary?"
"What do you mean ’not necessary’? It’s a required procedure. Just wait for me obediently," Helen sternly said, giving James a glare, to which he could only meekly agree.
Helen went back to her tasks for a while and came out about twenty minutes later, walking outside together with James. After a few steps, James’s knee weakened, almost causing him to trip and fall.
Helen hastily supported him, asking, "What happened?"
James replied with a wry smile, "My knee hurts."
Helen hesitated and then said, "I’ll help you walk."
James quickly said, "That’s really embarrassing, it’s just some pain." Nevertheless, his hand was already resting on Helen’s shoulder.
Helen was speechless, this guy was all talk but his actions said otherwise. He claimed he didn’t need help, yet without any hesitation, he was already leaning on her. Moreover, he put all his weight onto her shoulder, which would have brought her down if not for her strong physique.
As she hugged James’ waist to ease the pressure on her shoulder, Helen felt a bit better but couldn’t help complaining to James, "How come you’re so heavy?"
James responded with a chuckle, "Can’t be that heavy, right? I’m only around fourteen dollars."
"That’s heavy enough," Helen gasped, shooting James an annoyed glare as she helped him walk outside.
