Chapter 102: Chapter 102: Deceiving People

His mind whirred quickly, and James said, "Sarah, let’s talk about this later. First, dial the emergency call in the elevator, so someone can come and let us out. I really don’t want to sleep in this elevator all night."

Sarah hurriedly agreed, stood up, lit up her cellphone again, found the number, and dialed it. She described the situation in the elevator, but when she was about to mention James’s injury, he snatched her cellphone and turned it off. Otherwise, if an ambulance or something came, it would be even more embarrassing.

"Big Brother Brown, why did you do that?" Sarah was startled by James’s reaction.

Her phone was still on, and as James saw the nervous look on Sarah’s face, he felt a buzz of anxiety. Playing the hero to save the beauty could easily lead to the beauty offering herself in gratitude, and seeing Sarah right now, he sensed danger. He sneered and said, "No worries, just don’t make a fuss."

"Make a fuss?" Sarah was confused.

Gazing at Sarah, James’s smile became even broader, and he said, "Sarah, you’re really beautiful."

Sarah’s phone nearly slipped from her hand, and she looked down to avoid James’s gaze, stuttering, "Big Brother Brown, you... you’ve seen me before."

"Yes, I have, but you look more beautiful now." As he said this, James had already stood up.

"Big Brother Brown, how... how come you’re standing up?" Sarah’s eyes widened in shock at James, but then she screamed in surprise.

James let out a sly laugh and said, "Of course, I can stand up. With a beautiful girlfriend like you, it would be such a loss if I couldn’t stand."

"You... you... didn’t you say your leg was broken?" Seeing James unharmed, Sarah was immediately embarrassed.

"Right, if I hadn’t said my leg was broken, how would I have gotten a kiss from you, or have you as my girlfriend? Seems like the act was worth it after all," James laughed proudly.

"Big Brother Brown, you did it on purpose?" Sarah’s eyes flickered with complicated emotions.

James narrowed his eyes at Sarah and suddenly raised his hand towards her face, his eyes gleaming with a predatory wildness, and said, "What do you think?"

Sarah felt like she was being targeted by a beast and instinctively shrunk back, terror filling her eyes as she stuttered, "Big... Big Brother Brown... what are you going to do?"

James let out a playful laugh and said, "It’s just the two of us in this elevator. Don’t you think it’s the perfect opportunity?"

"Big Brother Brown, please don’t scare me. I know you’re not that kind of person," Sarah said, shaking her head emphatically, tears welling up.

Seeing the panic-stricken Sarah, James almost softened, but still leered and reached for her face, saying, "You’re mistaken, I am that kind of person. Holding you just now, feeling how soft your body and lips are, it really moved me. Come on, let me touch you, let me kiss you."

Sarah let out a shriek, recoiling sharply, and the cellphone she was holding clattered to the floor, the battery falling out. The elevator was plunged into darkness again.

In the darkness, James laughed ominously, "Sarah, I’ve had my eye on you for a long time, just give in to me, I’ll treat you well."

In the elevator, all that could be heard was Sarah’s heavy breathing, and judging by the sound, she had backed into a corner of the elevator.

James felt that he was being quite excessive, but it was also a preventative measure. Even if it meant Sarah would be wary of him in the future, it was better than her having any designs on him.

Just as he was about to scare Sarah with another comment, her breathing suddenly calmed, and she said softly, "Big Brother Brown, you’re too bad, scaring me on purpose."

James was speechless, suddenly realizing he had gone too far. Overdoing it had backfired, and Sarah had seen right through his act — a major blunder.

As James was contemplating how to cover his lie, there was a banging on the elevator door from above, and someone called out loudly, "How is everyone inside?"

"We’re okay, please open the elevator door," Sarah replied loudly.

"Ok, don’t be nervous, we’ll open the elevator door shortly," the person above reassured them then began to work on the door.

At this point, there was nothing James could say. He felt Sarah approaching; then his arm hurt as her voice reached his ear, "Big Brother Brown, turn on the phone, I found mine."

James had no choice but to take out his phone. The elevator was lit once again, and then he saw Sarah’s reproachful gaze. She also looked at him plaintively, saying, "Big Brother Brown, you’re so bad."

James gave a dry laugh and said, "That’s just who I am; sometimes I can’t control myself. If it weren’t for the repair crew arriving, I would definitely have taken advantage of you."

Sarah puckered her lips and said, "I don’t believe that for a second. You’re nothing like that. You just risked your life to save me. If that counts as wanting to take advantage of me, then I would willingly let you."

Blushing, Sarah crouched down to pick up her phone.

"Look at you, scaring my phone right out of my hands and onto the ground. If it’s broken, you’re going to owe me for it."

James Brown was speechless. Was he really that non-threatening?

Finally, the elevator doors opened, but they were stuck between the third and fourth floors, and people above needed to pull them up.

It was quite a height, and Sarah felt very scared, so James said, "Don’t be afraid. I’ll carry you up."

Sarah’s face turned red, and she shook her head, saying, "Big Brother Brown, is your leg okay? I think I should help you up."

Knowing he had been faking it before, James replied, "It’s fine. I’m pretty strong. Don’t forget, I used to be a security guard. Come on."

This time, Sarah didn’t insist any further. She nodded and said, "Then I’ll trouble you, Big Brother Brown."

James rubbed his nose, bent down, and wrapped his arms around Sarah’s knees. With a bit of effort, he lifted her up. With her back to James, as he picked her up, her buttocks brushed against his face; she could even feel the warm breath from his mouth on her behind. It was terribly embarrassing for Sarah, and she felt so weak she could barely hold herself up.

The people above hadn’t thought much about it and quickly grabbed Sarah’s hands, pulling her up while James effortlessly climbed up after her.

Both of them were mostly unharmed, and it turned out that the people who pulled them up were from the building’s security team, who James knew. One even winked at James teasingly and said, "Had we known what was happening, we might have delayed our arrival a bit longer."

Sarah’s face instantly turned bright red, and she took off running. But in her heart suddenly popped the thought: if those people had been a bit slower, what might have happened between her and James in the elevator?

The answer was probably nothing. James was just trying to scare her before, something Sarah was quite sure of. And when James saved her, he truly risked his life. If they had fallen deeper, he would have been injured for sure, and she would have been fine.

Though they had only worked together for a little over a month and had grown somewhat familiar with each other, having someone risk their life to protect her, even after knowing someone for ten or twenty years, was unlikely. Solely based on this fact, Sarah had come to see James as a genuinely good man.

Having run out of the building, Sarah stopped and waited until, after more than ten minutes, James walked out.

"Big Brother Brown, what took you so long?" Sarah approached him, her face flushing involuntarily.

James had deliberately chatted with the security guards for a while, thinking Sarah had left first, but upon realizing she had waited for him, he could only laugh and say, "I was just shooting the breeze with my former security friends. Why are you still here?"

"I said I would treat you to a meal, didn’t I?" Sarah felt slightly aggrieved; it seemed James hadn’t given her a thought.

"That’s right, I haven’t eaten yet. But I don’t feel like eating now. Are you going to get something to eat?" he said, hailing a taxi and getting in first before adding, "I’ll head off first. See you tomorrow."

Sarah was stunned, not expecting that kind of reaction from James. But as he was getting into the taxi, he suddenly stumbled, almost losing his balance.

After James’s taxi had departed, Sarah let out an alarmed shout. Although his walk seemed not too different from usual, he was visibly slower, surely because of his injury. He had not mentioned it to her at all.

She took out her phone to call James, but it was broken from the earlier fall and wouldn’t turn on. This left Sarah frantically pacing; James had been hurt because of her, yet she hadn’t noticed or accompanied him to the hospital. Now, unable to contact him, she felt extremely frustrated.

James wasn’t severely injured, but he indeed had sustained a contusion to his soft tissue. It wasn’t serious, but it was genuinely painful. However, he didn’t want to show his pain in front of Sarah to avoid additional gratitude.

The road by the entrance to the neighborhood, which was clear earlier that morning, now had a new trench, making it impassable by car. James had no choice but to exit the taxi and walk slowly towards the entrance.

But after only a few steps, several men smoking nearby suddenly approached him. James frowned upon recognizing that they were coming for him.

"James Brown!" one of the men even called out to him.

James found it amusing. He clearly didn’t know these men, so they shouldn’t know him either. Their calling out his name was simply to confirm his identity.

"Who are you?" he responded deliberately, then asked them in return.

"Go!" barked the leader. The men immediately charged at James.
