Chapter 80: Escaping The Woods

"The ring," Rory said, and without knowing she rushed forward to get that ring. All this while the ring was near her and she didn’t know it.

She wanted to get that ring back.

Liam held her back from rushing forward. His heart started to shake out of fear. The creature had heard her speak and was now staring right at them again.

His hand trembled. That creature had hidden her ring here.

How did he get her ring?

He wondered if that creature saw her fainting or if that creature was responsible for her fainting. Or it could just be that the creature found that ring and hid it here.

"You’re here... Little Rose... I found you again..."

The creature pointed right at Rory and smiled baring his blackened teeth. His eyes watered as he patted his flat cheek.

Rory started trembling and Liam held her hand.

"Hair..." That creature ran his bony fingers through the few hairs he had. "Lovely hair..." He laughed as a wheeze.

"I know you’ll taste better than anyone..."

As the creature spoke, his face turned menacing and he lunged at the branches they used as a hide.

Rory let out a blood-curdling scream and pushed the branches out. Maybe the creature was stunned by her scream he covered his ears with his hands and closed his eyes.

"Get the ring, Fizzy..." She shouted, trapping the creature beneath the layer of branches. She then pressed his head to the mud, trying to hit him.

The creature flailed his hands and feet. "I’ll eat you this time! You smell so de-li-cious!" The creature licked his black lips and tried to get a bite out of her hand.

Rory punched his face.

"My ring! Give it back!"

Rory tried to get the ring but the creature clenched the ring in his hands. Liam was shocked to see Rory trying to get the ring. She was terrified of the creature just moments ago. He didn’t know where she got the courage to fight the monster.

"No, Cherry..." Liam held her hand and dragged her back. "Stop being foolish!"

"The ring, Fizzy... Your mother’s ring! That’s the last thing you have of your mother..." She said and lunged back at the creature punching his face again.

Liam’s heart skipped a beat. She has gathered her courage because she does not want him to lose his mother’s ring.

What am I going to do with you, Cherry?

Rory was punching the creature and Liam noticed the creature trying to grab a rock. The creature looked like he was not feeling any pain. The rain fell on his face washing the blood gushing out of his face. But he looked like he wanted to eat Rory.

And then he saw the creature finding a gap to reach Rory’s neck.

"No!"

Liam pulled Rory back. But she was still getting to the creature shouting about getting back the ring.

"Let the ring go. It’s not important!" Liam shouted at Rory.

"But..." Rory could not accept it. She turned to see the creature grinning at them. He was holding a rock.

"Run!" She pushed Liam away.

Liam leaped at the creature with his knife. As Rory watched, the creature hit Liam in the head with the rock.

"Fizzy!" Rory screamed seeing the blood gushing out of his forehead. Liam wiped off the blood and a scuffle ensued.

"Run, Cherry! Run!" Liam screamed. He needed to make sure this creature does not follow them. He didnt think the creature was bluffing when he said that he wanted to eat Rory.

"Not leaving without you, Fizzy," Rory looked for a big rock to throw at the creature.

At that time she heard a loud snapping noise and looked up. She saw the thickest branch of the tree right above them, snapping.

"Fizzy!" She grabbed Liam by the collar and both of them ran away as far as they can.

As they ran a couple more branches snapped and covered the ground.

Rory looked back but they could not see the creature anymore. Liam grabbed her hand and pulled her as he ran.

They ran and ran as far as they can.

"Fizzy... Fizzy...stop..." Rory said among pants. She could not run anymore.

Liam stopped and took in a deep breath. He looked like he would run a mile more without breaking a sweat. But Rory slumped on the ground unable to take even a step.

"I’m sorry, Fizzy..." Rory looked at him and wiped the tears flowing from her eyes. "I’m sorry I lost your mother’s ring..."

"Idiot!" Liam shouted at Rory. "What were you even thinking?"

He wants to hit her head to check if she has a working brain inside. But he knew she is hurt already and he held back. Her hands and face had scratches and she couldn’t stop panting.

"Idiot!"

He sat beside her. He looked around to see if he could find out where they were. As far as his eyes could see, there were only trees. Lightning wasn’t even flashing anymore and there was only rain that didnt let up.

There was only a little light up in the sky and he knew they will lose that light within some minutes.

We are trapped in the woods!

His heart filled with fright. He regretted ever thinking of offing himself by getting lost in such a terrifying place.

And that creature... Who was that?

"Where are we, Fizzy?" Rory asked and he shook his head.

Rory let out a sigh. She knew it...

"We are screwed, aren’t we?" She asked and her voice choked.

"West... We need to find where the west is..." Rory said. "Phone... Compass..."

She said whatever came to her mind. Liam’s eyes widened with hope.

She got her phone. There still was no signal and with a sigh, she opened the Compass app. It opened and the needle started to move around.

Rory looked at Liam with a smile. "It...works..." She couldn’t contain her glee.

She saw the needle swirling over and over again without resting.

"Hold still..." Liam got the phone from her hand because he thought the needle is not settling because of her shaking hands.

But even in his still hand, the needle didnt settle. It rotated and rotated without resting.

"What is..." Rory knelt on the ground dejectedly.

"No way..." Liam joined her. The phone slipped and fell to the ground.

Even then, the needle didn’t settle and kept on rotating.

"What kind of place is this?" Rory hugged herself and looked around.

"Oh, God! What can we do? Oh, Ellie... Oh, poor Ellie... What will I do?" She started to sob.

Liam rubbed his forehead. "I am sorry, Cherry... I... It’s my fault..."

The rain started to get heavier and the wail of the rain on the trees made knots form in their stomach.

"What can we do, Fizzy?" Rory asked and he shook his head.

Both of them hugged each other. The wind picked up speed and not having a shelter, both of them curled in an open space they found.

Both of them lost hope.
