Chapter 78: Lost Conviction

He heard me... But I am never going to hear what I wanted to hear, aren’t I?

He is sitting by my side now. But once we get out of here... He will divorce me and we will go our way...

I want to be with him more... But...

At least I have Ellie, right?

Rory clenched her chest. It was sore and heavy. She’s been away from Ellie for more than six hours. Her baby would have cried for milk. But she was not there. She wondered if Ellie accepted food from others.

Ah... Pain...

Her breasts hurt so much. There was no leakage and since she didn’t feed Ellie and didn’t pump, the milk stayed and had caused breast engorgement.

It hurt so much. And combined with the stingy feeling at the back of her head, she felt like fainting. She couldn’t keep her head up anymore and her entire body lost its strength.

"...Cherry...look at me..."

She heard Liam and struggled to look at him.

"Cherry, what’s wrong?" Liam slightly tapped her cheeks to keep her conscious. But her irises rared to go into her upper lid.

"Your breasts are hard... Cherry... Speak! Say something..." He gently patted her chest. He didn’t remember those perky twins to be ever this hard.

There must be something to it.

"I haven’t pumped... And it hurts...so much..." Rory mumbled. A tear drip rolled from the corner of her eyes. She was in so much pain.

She tried to lean back on the tree but Liam held the back of her head and pulled her close to his chest.

"How can I help? Cherry? Please say something..." He tried to wake her up. But she closed her eyes as if she needed rest.

Liam started to panic.

Her back was bloody with the blood she lost from her wound. He didn’t know what he should do. He tried to give her water but she was not accepting it.

And as if that was not enough, it started to rain again. And this time it was heavy.

No...

Liam knew it is not wise to stay under the trees when there is a storm. He tried to get back to the truck but the rain was heavy and it was accompanied by heavy winds. He could not take even a single step carrying Rory. The rain beat up his face.

He found a small cave between the roots of two big trees and placed Rory inside carefully. He pulled some broken branches and leaves and covered the mouth of the cave and sat hugging her.

"Come on, love... Hold on..." He patted her cheeks to wake her up. Her face was pale and her lips have lost their color.

He wanted to lose hope and sulk. But he knew Rory does not afford it. She needs help and there is only one person who can help her now.

He could sense that she is heating up. And her chest was still hard as a rock. She said it hurt so much and he ran his fingers through his hair wondering what he could do to help.

She said she didn’t pump... The milk..? Is that what caused this hardness?

"Cherry... Speak...say something... If you pump, will it get better? Answer me... Cherry, wake up!"

She was not moving. The rain was getting heavier and he could sense that she is getting warmer.

This is no good...

He covered her with his jacket but she started to shiver. He called for her but she was not responsive.

Pump...

He gritted his teeth and pulled up her shirt. She is his wife and it is not wrong of him to do this if there is an emergency, right?

"Cherry... I am trying to pump...with my hands, alright?" He talked to her.

There was no answer from her. He took her silence as acceptance.

He gulped seeing her naked torso. It’s been a while since he’s seen her naked.

She looked pale and...different.

Her belly had stretch marks and she had a muffin top. She never had a muffin top in the past. Her stomach was always flat as a board and he loved her flat abdomen when she wore bikinis.

She has changed, hasn’t she... She did carry a baby in her belly and delivered it!

His lips curved to a smile.

What an amazing woman!

He didn’t notice her muffin top till then even when she was wearing a dress. She must have sucked it in whenever he was near. Or he didn’t care and didn’t notice.

He bent and kissed her little belly.

You’re beautiful.

He pulled her shirt further up and unhooked her bra. The twins looked different too, especially the n*pples...

Her body changed to accommodate our baby... She’s become a mother. She’s amazing...

He held out his hand to hold them. They were hard. He didn’t know what was the process that happens for them to secrete milk.

How does a pump work? Should I squeeze? Or... Should I employ the same technique used to milk a goat? Will it work? But her n*ps...

He gave a little squeeze and he saw her eyebrows twitching. No milk came. He tried again only for her to groan in pain.

"Sorry... Does it hurt? I’m sorry... " he pulled back.

The sound of the rain played scary drums in his heart. The branches were swaying hard all around and he heard a couple of branches snapping and falling on the ground with a thud.

"Cherry..." He patted her cheek and she was not responsive. Her fever had gotten worse and she started to shiver with her chest exposed.

She was mumbling something and he placed his ear near her mouth to have a listen.

"I’m here..." He whispered holding her hand.

She www saying a lot and he couldn’t hear it over the sound of rain. He heard only a little.

"...don’t leave me..."

"I won’t..." He kissed her forehead. "My sweet Cherry pie, I am not going to leave you..."

His shoulder pressed on her hard chest and he knew she is suffering because of that. They should leave the forest as soon as possible for her survival.

Ah, screw this!

He opted to help her the easiest way. The way that any baby knows... The surefire way.

There was a lot of milk. He won’t lie. He wanted to do it ever since he saw her feeding Liah for the first time. He wanted to have a taste.

And it didn’t taste bad.

He finished one side and it became a lot softer. And he finished the other side too. His belly filled up although that was not the intention.

He looked at her. She was still lying motionless. Her lips were parted and she was panting. He kissed her lips. His eyes teared up for some reason.

You’ve gotten so frail, Cherry... What will you do without help? Who will you ask for help? What should I do? I don’t want to leave you anymore...

He hugged her and fixed her clothes. She’s gained some weight and yet in his embrace, she looked little. He never saw her so helpless and frail. She always held herself well.

She was here for him and is suffering needlessly. And once he returns he will have to leave her.

I don’t want to...

He kissed her.

She will be by my side no matter what... Why should I push her away? I need her and she needs me... Our baby needs us together.

What’s stopping me from being with her?

"Cherry..." He whispered as she opened her eyes. It was as if she read his heart and decided to open her eyes to show him that she loved this decision of his.

"Fizzy..." Rory placed her hand on his cheek.

Her entire body hurt and her hand ended up on her chest as she felt relief there.

"It’s...soft..." She looked at him.

She knew it wouldn’t have gone away on its own. Liam should have helped with it. She didn’t want to prod it. He helped and that should be it. She didnt want to get the details.

If it was the past, he wouldn’t have stopped until he explained how he helped her. But they are not what they once were, right?

She decided to keep her distance from him just like he wants to.

"How are you feeling?" Liam helped her sit down.

"I’ve been better..." She said looking around.

Liam had made a proper shelter for them. The rain was so heavy she couldn’t see ten feet in front of them. She knew they won’t be leaving here anytime soon.

"Do you think anyone is searching for us?" She asked.

"Maybe... Maybe not... Other than our family I don’t think anyone would risk it to look for us... They probably think that we are playing pranks as always..." He said with a sigh.

He remembered Derick begging them to remember the story of "the boy who called wolf" each time they played pranks on everyone.

"We should have listened to Derick..." Rory sighed and leaned back. But something pressed on her wound and she winced.

"It was nutty..." Liam leaned closer to her ear. "...and sweet..."

"What?" Rory was confused about what he meant but she realized what he was talking about seeing his smirk. She shrugged.

"You’ve never tasted it?" He asked and his smirk reached his eyes. He leaned closer to her.

"No...No... Liam..." She pushed his chest.
