Chapter 59: [Bonus Chapter] Truth is Out

Charles had a lot of stories to talk about Rory and Ian.

"Ah...Everyone in the town loved her! That dull town brightened up with her antics. But..." Charles rubbed his knees. "After that grievous...accident... My wife wanted to adopt her. I had no objections and wanted to move forward with the procedure. We watched her grow up and she was, she IS one of us. And her relatives..." he cleared his throat. He didn’t want to talk bad about others.

Liam saw Agnes staring at Charles blankly. But her eyes were lively as if she was listening keenly. She looked better than yesterday.

"But Ian did not let us." Charles chuckled.

Liam gulped and looked at Ian.

"Pa, don’t!" Ian glared at his father.

Liam was intrigued.

"He wanted~"

"Pa! Please!" Ian raised his voice. Rather than anger, embarrassment ruled his face.

But Charles didn’t mind him. He looked determined to let the truth out. Liam looked at him intently and through his peripheral vision, he could see Mrs. Delport smiling.

"He was twelve then and yet he..." Charles sighed. "He didn’t want her to become his sister because he wanted to marry her in the future."

Liam hiccupped. "Excuse me," he mumbled and took a glance at Ian. Ian was bowing his head and clasping his hands together. His hands were shaking.

"That’s cute!" Mrs. Delport said rubbing her palms.

"It’s..." Charles cleared his throat. "It would have been something we welcomed with our whole hearts, but... Who knew she’d marry very young? In the end, fate has the last say..."

Liam didn’t dare to look at anyone’s face. He was ashamed. If it was a couple of years back, he would have answered impertinently to Charles. He would have proudly proclaimed snapping his fingers that Rory married a much better man not minding Charles’ age or title.

But now, he didn’t even have the guts to face anyone there. He felt like he was on fire.

He was sure that he wanted to marry her and promised everyone that he will take good care of her. And yet, he hurt her in every way possible and is currently in a bind to push her away.

Every time she talks to him, every time she begs him without being obvious not to go through the divorce, every time she asks him why he wants the divorce... he feels like a worm on fire.

He was holding it over her head that she fought with him for gifts and that she was materialistic. But today he learned that she did that out of insecurity. She asked for gifts because she was treating him as her husband.

Seriously? How did I not get it? Is there any wife in this world who won’t expect gifts from her husband? Why was I that dumb?

He thought about Mrs. Delport’s words. She was right. After she leaves him, she won’t stay single all her life. And...

Liam rubbed his forehead to soothe the throbbing pain.

"What are you talking about?"

Rory’s sweet husky voice was an oasis for him and he looked up.

"I was talking about how you used to make me run up and down the hills holding my car keys," Charles answered.

"You should have continued to run, uncle. It would have kept your cholesterol under control." Rory chuckled patting Ellie on her back.

"Haha...Indeed! Without you, my cholesterol shot up. The doctor said that I have diabetes too," Charles laughed.

Liam silently scooted over for Rory to sit, but she took the empty seat near Mrs. Delport. "She is sleepy but she is not sleeping. I think she wants to be with us all. So I brought her here," Rory whispered to Mrs. Delport.

Mrs. Delport got Ellie from Rory and started to talk to her. Ellie listened to her intently and started giggling whenever her voice got higher.

Her face turned sad hearing Charles’ illnesses. He saw the care in her eyes. She has a lot of love in her heart and there are a lot of people close to her heart. He was astonished to see how big her heart is.

Charles’ jokes turned her away from the serious thought and she started smiling with him. But Liam could not shirk off Ian’s stare at Rory.

"Rori," Charles looked at her and his face turned somber. "I want to talk about something very...important..." he looked at Liam.

Rory understood that Charles is hesitating because of Liam. Liam could see that too. He stood up immediately just out of courtesy. But he knew Rory will stop him from leaving.

Well, she would if it was in the past, but now...

Not breaking his trust, Rory stood up. She held Liam’s hand and sat beside him. "It’s fine, uncle. You can speak. He is my...um... he’s Ellie’s father," she said and let go of his hand. "What is it?"

Liam felt a sharp stab in his heart. She cannot introduce him as her husband anymore...

"I hear that your parent’s accident..." Charles cleared his throat and Ian bowed his head. Rory’s heart skipped a beat and she looked at her grandmother. She had no change in expression. Mrs. Delport stood up and walked closer to the window with Ellie.

Rory did not have a good feeling about it. "Yes?" she asked. Her hands have already gone cold. But then she felt a warmth enveloping her hand. It was Liam. Liam let out a deep breath and nodded at her with a slight curve of his lips.

Rory gulped and looked at Charles. She felt a little stronger with Liam’s warmth.

"The one who confessed..."

Rory rubbed her forehead as she guessed where it might go.

"They are saying that it was not the driver driving the car. It was John’s son Jason McCullen. And..."

"No..." she let out a grunt. "It can’t be...It can’t be..."

She handled her parent’s death somehow and has moved on. She did not want that case to be reopened now. She didn’t know if it is right to feel this way. Shouldn’t she want justice to be served and fight till the actual culprit gets sentenced? Is avoiding trouble the right thing to do?

Liam held her hand tightly. "Who is saying that? And isn’t John McCullen the running challenger for the upcoming Prime Minister election in your country?" Liam asked.

He can see that Rory is suffering. And he understood her if she didn’t want that case to be reopened.

But if such news is getting leaked when he is running for the election of the highest post of their land, it could very well be a ploy by the opposition party to cause trouble.

Or it could be the truth that will bring him down and it was leaked!

Charles let out a sigh. "There’s video proof..." Charles looked at Rory. "Your aunt...Theresa has a video. And she... Rori, she is planning on extorting money from him... Using you. Rori, don’t trust her. Don’t come there..."

"Go there?" Liam mumbled and Rory’s heart skipped a beat.

She stared at him with her eyes wide.

I’m screwed!
