Chapter 53: Distance

Frank let out a sigh. His grumble changed to joy. If those two cannot keep their hands off each other, then that means they won’t go through the divorce.

"Making them stay in the same room worked, I think," he smiled.

Agnes Roberts is truly a genius. Rather than confronting the kids, she proposed to treat them as a married couple. And it is working!

"I am glad, Frank," Claire said pulling him to the living room. "I thought whether we would appear to be bragging when their relationship was bad but now... I am happy!" She did a little dance. "I know she just had a baby but wouldn’t it be awesome if she gets pregnant again?" She went on voicing her thoughts. She was very happy.

Rory didn’t let go of his lips. The little wall she tried to build thinking that he was dating Allison disappeared like fog and what was left was her uncontrollable desire for him. She forgot that she is currently lying in the hallway in his parents’ home. She missed him so much.

If he wants to be just friends, let him push me away!

She closed her eyes, slipped her fingers to clasp a bunch of his hair at the back of the head, and started nibbling on his lips. He did not protest and with a groan, he slipped his tongue inside her lips. He gently grazed his hand over her legs and to the north. Softly holding the crown of her head, he slipped his hand inside her shirt while kissing her lips.

As their tongues danced together, Liam’s rational brain tried to push her away. He has to keep her away from him; not stick his tongue inside her throat.

But he couldn’t stop. He missed her so much. He wanted her that much. Seeing her entirely mesmerized in his embrace made him lose his mind. He wanted her immediately. He decided to take her to bed.

*Grrrr*

The grumble of her stomach stopped him. She stopped kissing and looked at him with an embarrassing smile." I am very hungry," she whispered. "Fizzy," she pouted rubbing his earlobe. "Cook me something."

He let out a sigh. Her lips were glistening red but her eyes were not inviting. She truly was hungry. He pressed his crotch over her abdomen to show her his affliction. He asked her for some time to compose himself.

Rory nodded fixing the fringes of his hair falling in his eyes. He kissed her forehead and lay beside her.

"You do know that friends don’t kiss, right?" she asked looking at him with a sly smile.

He rolled his eyes and kissed her cheek. "What do you want to eat?" he asked.

Rory shrugged. "Whatever..." she truly didn’t mind.

She rolled the engagement ring on her finger. She realized that she was having that ring only in the morning. Liam must have been the one who returned her ring. She truly didn’t understand what he is doing.

He returns her engagement ring and says that he wants to be friends. What should she think of that? But she already promised him that she won’t talk about it. She didn’t want to break her promise.

"Thanks to you I had six hours of sleep last night," she said. She didn’t remember the last time she slept for six hours without waking up in the middle.

He looked at her. "Produce more milk and store it. I’ll make sure you get eight hours of sleep each night."

"Produce?" she chuckled. "You mean pump? And I don’t want to get used to you taking care of Ellie at night. You won’t be with me for~"

She stopped herself from speaking further. She didn’t want to bring up that topic but she couldn’t let it go.

Come to think of it...

He looked at her as if he is seeing a miracle. "By the way, I am not dying," she said. She guessed that’s what he wanted to know.

But I am going to leave for my homeland!

She was looking for words to tell him but she got another thought.

What if he is the one in trouble? What if that is the reason he is trying to push me away? But what kind of trouble? Is his business not doing well? Or is he the one who is sick?

"Liam?" she called him.

"Hmm," he looked at her.

Rory held his hand. "Know that when you are in trouble I will fight for you whether you want me to or not. It’s a promise," she said.

He need not tell her anything. But if he is in trouble, she will take his side with her sword out and will fight for him and his happiness.

He looked at her for a couple of seconds and without saying anything got up. He gave her a hand to pull her up and walked to the stairs. Rory followed him watching his back. She didn’t know that Liam was hiding his tears from her.

Rory looked around to see if Frank or Claire are around but the house looked empty. Grandma Roberts had taken Spikes for grooming and so the entire house was quiet.

"Don’t care for my affairs. Just be careful especially when driving, and take good care of the baby, Cherry," Liam said placing the hot pancakes in front of her.

"I am careful," she said. "I even stopped driving over 30 miles/ hour," she sighed. He is right to worry. She used to drive pretty fast back in those days.

"And... I always fear it when I leave Ellie alone when I go out. But then I will calm myself knowing that you are there," she smiled. "In a way, it is better we are separated. The probability of something happening to both of us at the same time leaving Ellie orphaned~"

"Nothing’s going to happen to you," Liam held her hand. "Don’t think stupid stuff."

Rory nodded. Maybe she is overthinking. But after losing her parents in a car crash, she doesn’t like car rides much but...

"Speaking of that... I was thinking of asking Derick to be Ellie’s godfather. What do you think?" she asked.

Liam raised his brows. "You still haven’t made these arrangements yet?" he asked. He thought she might have asked Derick the day the baby was born.

"I can’t make these decisions by myself, right?" Rory asked rubbing her forehead. "You’re the father and yet that day you..." she stopped herself as she didn’t want to talk about the past again.

"And Derick..." she bit her lips. "He’s... he’s acting a little distant from me..." she pouted.

"Distant? Him?" Liam was surprised. He felt guilty. He wondered if he is the reason Derick is distancing himself from Rory. But Rory misses Derick.

"Did he say something?" He feared if Derick talked to her about him doubting Rory with him.

"No," Rory said after thinking. "But I have a feeling..." she let out a deep breath. "Maybe...maybe he thinks that I caused his divorce and doesn’t want me involved in his life anymore..."

"That can’t be it," Liam refused.
