Chapter 44: Caring For His Happiness

"And that fat boy too... He didn’t jump at me. Did they go on a vacation leaving my dad?" Liam asked. "Hmpf! That woman sure is selfish, right? Just because she got married to a rich man, she thinks that she can spend it all on herself and that fatty will waste all the money on food alone. My dad is stupid to keep them~"

She could not bear hearing Liam talk bad about Claire as if he knows what she thinks. Claire has proved time and time again how much she loves Frank and this family.

It is preposterous that Liam cannot see it! Or he just doesn’t care! How can he be like this?

When she is with them, she would put a leash on Liam. Even then, he would hurt Claire and his dad occasionally. After she leaves for her homeland, how much will he hurt his family?

She was terrified!

He has a lovely father who cares so much for him and yet he cannot be happy for him and accept his family. If Liam is acting brash and boorish with the people who love him, what will happen when they give up on him?

Already Claire started to hide from Liam, and what if his father ignores him altogether? Who will be left for Liam? There is uncle Lenny, but...he is not his immediate family!

And Allison... she’s a vampire; a vulture. He is rich already and he will only get richer. He won’t lack "friends" around him. But how many of them will be true friends? How many will love him for real? Can he differentiate the ones who are with him for his money?

Why can’t he see the love his family has for him and return it? They love him even when he is an ass with them. Why can’t he show them love? When his grandmother is getting old, why can’t he make her happy by spending time joyfully with his family?

When will he learn to talk with respect? When will he find happiness?

Rory worried for Liam. He is not going to be honest with her. But that doesn’t mean she cannot learn his heart by other means.

"She left your dad and took Chubster with her," Rory said without opening her eyes.

She hoped he doesn’t laugh in glee or express his delight about it. She truly hoped Liam knows how much his father loves Claire and Chubster, and how happy Claire makes him.

She had a sliver of hope that he doesn’t mean what he says about Claire. That those are just words he speaks without meaning it. It is entirely possible. Hell, he said he blabbered in anger about doubting the paternity of Ellie, right? If so... does he truly hate Claire as much as she thinks he does?

There was no answer from him. And she continued.

"Last I heard, she was working as a nurse in a hospice in GR. She refused any support from your father; even child support. So you can rest assured that you will get the entire inheritance all for yourself," She lied through her teeth. "And your father is now wifeless as you always wished for him to be."

"Left?" he pulled her shoulder to make her face him.

"Yes." Rory met with his eyes.

"Why?" he asked, his eyes wide. He looked confused and a little...

Is that sadness?

"Why?" Rory shrugged. Heaven knows the relief she felt seeing his concerned face. He is not some heartless monster! She always knew that!

"Why do you care? Isn’t that what you always wanted? Go on and celebrate. The evil woman by your father’s side is gone !" she scoffed.

He opened his mouth trying to say something but words didn’t come out of his mouth. Looking at her, he tried to act unaffected. But he couldn’t. Rory kind of enjoyed seeing the "caught with his hand in the cookie jar" look on his face. But more than nervousness, he looked sad.

And it made her think.

If he does not want Claire to leave and asks her to leave without meaning it, then it means that he understands that Claire is an important person in his father’s life. And she has always seen how he acts with her family.

If he knows how to maintain a proper conversation with her family without saying something to ruin the mood, he can act the same with his family too.

And if he doesn’t...

Rory wondered if she is one of the reasons he crosses the line. He knows that she will stop him from going overboard. Maybe that’s what it is! If I leave, he will be kind to his family members too...

Or he would entirely ignore them! But that cannot happen.

"Fizzy," she placed her hand on his cheek. His face had gone cold and she rubbed his cheeks with both of her hands. He stared right at her.

Liam was perplexed. He didn’t think that his father would be left alone because of him. He remembered his father’s demeanor when his mother was alive. He was always tired and he never smiled. But lately, he was very happy. Of course, he was mad about it when he thought Claire was the reason, but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t want his father to be happy.

He got angry at Claire for leaving his father, but... Ah, her hands are warm...

"Be nice to your family, please...." She said softly. "You can see it, right? Everyone loves you, Fizzy. And it hurts them if you say hurtful words. Even if they know that you don’t mean it, words still hurt. Whenever they think about you, all they would remember would be those hurtful words forming a scar in their heart. Little by little, those little scars would accumulate forming a thick partition between you and them. So please..."

Liam stared at her intently. He didn’t know why she is talking about this now. But her eyes...

Is she saying that she is fed up with me?

"I understand that you don’t want me in your life. That’s fine. But don’t stop visiting your family, alright?" she added.

He needs good people around him.

Maybe she cried a lot and her tears were dried up, she couldn’t cry anymore. And she was very sleepy.

Rory closed her eyes and immediately fell asleep.

Liam stared at her and his heart shook with fear as the warmth from her hands left his cheeks. He didn’t know why she brought up this topic out of nowhere. But then he remembered that he was the one who brought up the topic. It calmed him down a little.

So, that woman left my dad..? Is that why dad was extra mad at me today?

Liam pondered.

Maybe I shouldn’t have been too hard on her?

He turned to look at Rory sleeping peacefully. The way she talked to him made him uneasy. The entire day, she’s been acting differently.

As if... She doesn’t have time.

What is that about?

And... I want her more than anything in my life...

His eyes clouded.
