Chapter 43: Talk To Me

Liam met with her eyes. With the fever and all her crying the entire day, her eyes looked puffy and her face looked pale. She wants answers which is acceptable. But he was not willing to talk to her about it.

*Brrr*

The vibration in his phone came as a nice distraction. The only one who would bother to send messages at this time of the night would be "her". It was not necessary to reply immediately, but he didn’t want to interact with Rory now. He immediately picked up his phone.

Reading the received message, his heart started to pound. His fingers trembled as he searched for the right reply. Because he needs to be very careful about his interactions. It is possible he is being watched and his interactions will be made public in the future.

And that means he will have to push her far away from him!

He bit his lips seeing her walking away with disappointment.

Rory saw him typing on the phone. She didn’t know who would send a message at this time of the night.

Well, maybe it is Allison. Does she know that we are sharing a bed? Did he tell her or is he lying to her too?

Rory with a wry smile walked to the crib. She saw that Ellie is starting to wake up. If she feeds and burps her when she is half awake, it would make her night a lot better.

Showing her back to Liam, she fed Ellie and burped her. As she was patting her, Rory pondered about a lot of things.

She was sure by now that Liam does not want to talk about the divorce. Because if he is willing to talk to her about it, he would have opened up by now. She has cried to him, asked him gently, and still, he is avoiding the question.

He will never tell me!

This is not the first time he is trying to hide his heart from her. He has hidden a lot from her—about his mother, about the fight he had with his father, and now this. His heart is a locker and he protects his important emotions in there as treasures. She does not have the key to his heart. She is just a guard who can stay by the door and never gets invited in.

Maybe I should just leave... I don’t like standing outside, waiting for the door to open... Why should I waste my time and love on someone who will never return it?

It’s lonely and cold out here!

She didn’t like giving up on him. But it appears as if she is clinging to him. She keeps on deciding to let him go but she cannot move on without knowing why he doesn’t want her. In just a day she was hurt plenty of times and still, she is trying to reason with him as if he cares for her.

But he does care for her! Why else is he taking care of her when she is sick?

She got more and more confused. Her emotions went haywire and she didn’t want to think about it now. Ellie fell asleep without any struggle and Rory carefully placed her in the crib.

She didn’t want to talk to him or lie beside him, but she was too tired. The medicine took effect by now and she got sleepy as her temperature started to go down. She decided to clean one of the guest rooms the next day. She didn’t want to stay in his room anymore.

He was still texting and she laid showing her back to him. She could hear him type. He was sending long messages as if he was giving orders. She got curious about who he is talking to. She had a feeling that it cannot be Allison.

And it was then she realized that there was not a single phone call from Allison to him the entire time he was with her.

Are they even dating? But then, we never texted or called often too. Well... why should I care?

Rory almost fell asleep when she felt the bed sinking behind her. And gradually she could feel his warm breath over her ear getting closer.

"Cherry!"

He loud whispered in her ear making her wince a bit. But she wanted him to think that she is asleep. If he is caring for her, he should back off to let her sleep, right?

But her expectation was not met. He kept on calling her. And she kept on pretending that she didn’t hear him. She couldn’t change her expression because she is pretending to be asleep and she had no outlet to release her anger.

Ugh! Does he want to kill me?

Liam knew she needed sleep. But he didn’t want her to go to sleep crying. He wanted to make sure she is not crying.

But she was pretending to be asleep. He knew she was pretending because her nose was flared. She always flares her nose when she is pretending to be asleep.

"Grandma said that Derick is inviting his ex-wife to the wedding," he whispered. He wasn’t sure of it but he said it anyway to grab her attention.

She never ignores news about Derick. And she hates Derick’s ex-wife deeply.

But he was surprised she is still not moving.

Rory wanted to open her eyes. She wanted to cuss Derick for being an idiot. Seriously! Who invites their ex to their wedding?

And that woman... she couldn’t pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were on the heel.

Yeah, she is that smart! But she doesn’t accept that. She thinks she is going to solve the string theory because she watches a sitcom about geniuses.

One can adjust with stupidity and pride, but that woman is toxic. She couldn’t believe Derick invited her to the wedding knowing her character.

It’s pure stupidity! I should talk to Derick!

Liam saw the creases on her forehead and smiled. He upped his game to rile her up. Because, if she is angry, she won’t cry.

"Since you broke up their marriage, she would be very angry at you...just be careful..."

Rory fisted her hands inside the duvet. He actually said that I broke up Derick’s marriage!

If it was someone else who said those words to her, she would have punched them in the face and fattened their nose. But it is Liam.

And she did make Derick divorce that woman! So...

Liam was disappointed to see her not reacting to those words. But it was a nerve for her. No one knows what happened, but the complaint the family received from that woman was that Rory hit that woman and Derick took Rory’s side(no surprise there, but he should have taken the side of his son’s mother!)

Rory refused to talk about why she hit that woman and Derick didn’t open his mouth about it either. He asked the family to not talk about it again. Even when it affected his chance to have sole custody of his son, Derick refused to throw Rory under the bus.

’Rory did nothing wrong and no one should bother with what’s between us!’—that’s all he said about that issue.

Liam never liked Rory’s deep connection with Derick. And he hated Derick forever. Those two had a separate world where they shared secrets of their own. He felt like an outsider.

And he let the jealousy affect his heart to the extent that he doubted Rory. And that was the biggest blunder of his life. Because of that, he is currently in a terrible bind.

Liam sighed seeing Rory not reacting to this either. He wondered if she truly has fallen asleep. Her face was relaxed but her nose was still flared. His lips curved to a mocking smirk but then his lips trembled as panic filled his heart.

Why is she not talking to me?

Like a worm writhing on hot asphalt, his heart writhed in pain. His stomach got twisted into knots. He felt desolate.

"Cherry," he softly caressed her cheek. She was not reacting to it either. He thought of some other interesting topic.

"That woman... why is she not here?" he asked.
