Chapter 36: Does His Family Know?

"Aren’t you forgetting something, Cherry?" Liam asked walking to her. "What?" he asked as she stood up suddenly.

Rory was not listening to him. She was in her thoughts. She found it odd that Liam cared about her grandmother and asked her to not talk about the divorce.

Liam rarely cares for others!

Judging by how his family is acting with her as if everything was normal, she had a feeling that Liam didn’t tell them about their divorce. After he asked for a divorce, she didn’t visit the town afraid to face both families. After Ellie’s birth, Liam’s family came to visit her and they only talked for some hours. She then thought that they are avoiding the topic of their divorce. But now she had doubts.

But Derick knows... I told him... But it is possible he didn’t tell the family. If so... Wait...

Rory’s heart started to beat fast. She grabbed Liam’s collar and looked into his eyes. He tried to pull back but she gripped hard.

"Are we divorced...for real, Liam?" she asked, pulling him closer.

She signed the papers—that she knew. But she didn’t get any update from him afterward. They started living separately and avoided talking but that doesn’t mean that they are divorced.

"Cherry, what-" Liam held her hands to get free himself. His heart pounded as he was caught.

What was he going to do? Let his child be born to unmarried parents? He didn’t sign the papers until Aurelia’s birth.

But he is willing to let the child grow with her parents divorced. Isn’t that...worse? But it is necessary!

Ugh!

He couldn’t even understand himself. What will he tell Rory?

Rory didn’t let it go. "Have you signed the papers? Why wasn’t there any~"

"Aren’t you here to visit your grandmother?" Liam asked.

Rory’s eyes widened. She let go of him.

Ah, damn! How did I forget that? Mrs. Delport said that grandma was not eating! Here I am... already finished dinner and... I forgot about her!

She let go of Liam and walked to her luggage to get a change of clothes. Liam sighed in relief seeing her getting to the bathroom to change. He left the room.

Rory got downstairs to where the family was. She passed through Claire’s room and she heard her talking to Chubster. She poked her head in. It was a video call and Chubster noticed her.

"Rory!"

Clyde Dewitt Roberts aka Chubster shouted in glee. In his PJs, he looked cute. He used to be fat. He was so fat they couldn’t carry him. But as he grew up he started to get thin. He does have the good genes of the Roberts family.

Hearing him, a group of nine-year-olds poked their heads to have a look.

"She’s Rory, my sister-in-law..." Chubster said with a wide grin. Rory could hear the murmurs among the boys whispering that she is pretty. Claire laughed covering her mouth.

"Ask her... come on!" Chubster told one particular boy. That boy’s face went red for a moment but with the courage given by the other boys with their assuring pats and looks, that boy asked the question.

"Is Clyde really an uncle?"

"Yes," Rory said placing her hand on her hip. "He has a niece. You all can come to meet her."

"Ooooh..." the boys started to giggle and whisper among themselves. They all acted as if they’d seen a miracle. Rory chuckled seeing Chubster sitting with his chest puffed. He looked proud.

"You came here alone?" Chubster asked. Rory knew what he meant.

"Ellie is with me," she said.

"And..?" Chubster’s pretty blue eyes widened. Rory couldn’t believe how Chubster ended up with blue eyes too. His mother has pretty brown eyes and brown hair, but Chubster came out with the Roberts family’s blue eyes. And his hair is getting darker as he grows up.

He is going to be a heartthrob!

"And what, Chu-" she paused.

She wanted to call him by his nickname but she knew the other boys would make fun of him using that name and so she held back.

"Your brother is here too," Rory whispered. What followed was the loud squeal of that boy.

"Mom, mom, mom...." He shouted, "Come pick me up, immediately...mom..." he started begging.

Claire tried to pacify her son. "But you wanted to go to the sleepover...I cannot come-"

"Mooommmm...but Liam is here! Mom, mom, mom... please... mom, mom..."

Chubster started to beg.

Rory expected that. This boy loves, no, he idolizes his big brother. He would look at his brother with stars in his eyes.

But that darn Liam... He is an idiot!

"Clyde," Rory interrupted him. "He’ll be here for at least a week. So-"

"Really?" Chubster pouted. He didn’t believe her. "Don’t lie to me, Rory. You always lie to keep me away from Liam. You’re a jealous bitch-"

"Clyde!" Claire interjected him angrily. "What are you saying? Apologize to Rory right now!"

Little Chubster pouted and he looked away. "I am sorry," he said. It was obvious he did not mean his apology.

Claire was not pleased. "Clyde Dewitt Roberts! Apologize-"

Rory placed her hand on Claire’s shoulder and shook her head asking her to let go. Claire was not pleased but she nodded half-heartedly.

They protected Chubster from knowing the other side of Liam. Whenever Liam is in a "bad mood" Rory would not let him near Chubster. She doesn’t like him to act like an ass with the adults but she would block him from acting even a little mean with Chubster. That child does not deserve to endure Liam’s tantrums.

Whatever short interactions Liam had with Chubster were very pleasant resulting in Chubster idolizing his truly awesome big brother.

Rory didn’t think that she would become the bad guy in this... But she didn’t mind that.

"I am not lying. When you come home in the morning, you can play with Ellie and your brother," Rory said with a smile.

"Really? You promise?" Chubster asked.

Rory nodded and Chubster ended the call with a smile after saying good night to his mother.

"I am going to meet my grandmother. Mrs. Delport said that she is very sick and she is not eating..." Rory told Claire her reason for the visit.

Claire apologized on behalf of her son. Rory didn’t mind. If she were Chubster, and if someone always stopped her from meeting her favorite person, she would get angry at that person too. He is a child. It is acceptable if he misunderstood.

Rory got downstairs and got the sleeping baby from Dorothy’s hand. She along with Liam got out of the house. Frank lent his truck for use and asked them to return here for the night. And they left.

The moment the truck left the front yard, Claire came running down the stairs and Dorothy looked at her.

"Are they really getting divorced?" Dorothy asked confused.

"Right?" Claire slapped her thigh. "Both are wearing their rings and they didn’t refuse to stay in the same room!"
