Chapter 35: Home Sweet Home(2)

When Rory met the Roberts family, Frank and Claire were just married. She remembered thinking that Claire is too young to be the mother of a twelve-year-old. And she came to know that she was not his birth mother only after a week.

Rory learned a little about Liam’s mother Brigetta. Liam’s mother and his father were childhood sweethearts. They were always together and everyone knew that they would end up together. They had Liam when Frank was just twenty-one—when they were still in university.

They married when they knew Brigetta was pregnant, but she got sick during pregnancy. Rory was not told what kind of sickness, but Frank quit his studies to come to live in his parent’s home because Brigetta needed constant care. Grandma Roberts took care of Brigetta and Liam was born in this house.

Brigetta died when Liam was eleven. Claire, who was working in Frank’s convenience store became his wife within a year of Brigetta’s death. Claire was twenty-one when she married and Frank was thirty-three. It sparked various rumors in the town.

Liam... whether he listened to the rumors or because of other reasons, hated Claire right from the start. He used to say that his father married someone close to his son’s age than to his age. He’d blame Claire for killing his mother. He is under the impression (that goes with the rumors in the town) that his mother died because of his father’s affair with Claire.

But Rory found Claire to be a kind and a very easygoing woman. She rarely takes anything to heart and she is a natural caregiver.

Liam was always an ass to Claire, but she never took anything to heart.

Grandma Roberts was very tired taking care of Brigetta for a decade. Grandpa Roberts was admitted to a hospice after having a stroke.

When they learned that Grandpa Roberts was getting abused in the hospice by a mean staff, Claire was the one who made the tough choice. She took an effort and with the family’s permission brought grandpa Roberts back home. She became his full-time nurse and she took very good care of him. She took very good care of grandma Roberts too.

Rory heard Liam’s eldest uncle mentioning that he is seeing his mother smile after a decade only after Claire’s arrival.

Grandpa Roberts lived a year more than what the doctors told the family he would live, all thanks to Claire’s care. She even postponed getting pregnant to take care of grandpa Roberts.

Rory likes Claire and they have had quality times together which Rory enjoyed. Liam would fight with her for talking to Claire, but Rory never cared. But slowly Claire stopped talking to Rory whenever Liam was around.

Liam’s hate for Claire only worsened as he aged.

Liam never talked to her about it, but Rory believed that Liam hates his father because he thinks that his father ignored his sick mother and had an affair with a young woman which led to his mother’s death.

And when he was seventeen, he had a big fight with his father and she believed that it should be regarding his mother’s death. Her heart still pounds remembering that day he was standing by her window at night, in the dark.

She let him in and although he showed himself to be okay, she had a feeling that if she let him go, she won’t see him again. It was just a feeling she had looking at his eyes and to this day she cannot confirm whether she overthought or misjudged or if she was right.

So she hid him in her room. And that led to a string of events that led to their wedding. She still doesn’t like how they forced her to marry him, but if the chance presents itself, she still would hide him in her room. She would take different decisions afterward, but she will hide him as she did before.

He was shaking that day and in his eyes, she saw exasperation. She had a feeling that he had given up on everything. She might have misjudged. She had felt the same when she learned of her parents’ death and she thought he was feeling the same.

"Billy!" Dorothy hugged Liam.

"Grandma! How are you!" Liam hugged his grandmother and kissed her cheek. He does love his grandmother.

Rory looked to see Claire has disappeared up the stairs. Claire tried her best to get along with Liam. But Liam never accepted her. He’d just snap at her and once he almost hurt her. From then on, Claire stays away from Liam.

It appears that she does so under Frank’s instruction. Rory didn’t even blame Claire or Frank. Liam is stupid.

"Do you have any soup, grandma? Rory is sick in the head," Liam walked to the kitchen.

Rory raised her eyebrows. "Sick? You’re the sick one, eejit!" she gritted her teeth.

He is the only one in this universe who can open his mouth and make her mad. Who is sick in the head? He is!

"She’s sick?" Dorothy looked at Rory. Frank rushed and got Ellie from Dorothy’s hands.

"Should I call the doctor?" he asked, concerned.

"No!" she stomped her feet but no one listened to her.

"I already got the medicines," Liam answered and Frank got relieved.

Within a moment, she was sitting at the dining table with a bowl of soup and Liam placed the pills in front of her. Rory checked the pills and they were fever pills.

Oh... this explains the headache and nausea I had...Ah... and that ginger soup...

She only then realized that she is having a fever. She looked at Liam and he raised his eyebrows with a smirk pointing at the pills. She curled her lips and looked away. She didn’t want to hit him in front of his family.

But it would be better if she eats and takes the medicine. She cannot make Ellie sick.

After she drank the soup, she was served dinner. She asked others to join her but no one was willing to eat until she finishes and so she finished dinner right to the apple pie. She was not happy to look at the pills, but she swallowed them pinching her nose.

The things I do for my baby...

By the time she finished dinner, her luggage was brought to Liam’s room on the first floor, the crib was settled in the room right beside the bed, and Ellie was given a bath and was changed.

I’m going to get lazy if I stay here...

Rory thought lying on the bed staring at the ceiling. After the refreshing bath, Ellie fell asleep once more in Dorothy’s lap. The medicine took effect and her headache went away. She got sleepy.

Liam returned after having dinner. His lips curved up seeing Rory lying on his bed so carelessly.

Rory got up hearing the door unlock. With a smile, he closed the door and walked in. Seeing his smirk, she came to a sudden realization.

Wait... why are my stuff in his room? Why am I in his room?

We are divorced...right?
