Chapter 270: The Wind to His Sails, The Light of his World, His Bedrock

"I kindly call Mr. Liam Roberts, the greatest entrepreneur, philanthropist, and visionary of our times to present The Humanitarian Award of the Year!!!"

The emcee announced cheerfully.

Rory clapped her hands enthusiastically. Liam gets invited to award ceremonies these days. This particular award ceremony is something that was like the Nobel Prize which appreciates talents in various fields.

Liam has won the Entrepreneur of the Year award a couple of times, and he also won the Innovator of the Year award once. This year, they’ve added this particular award. Rory was curious about who would be the first to win this award.

She doesn’t like to attend these awards much, but Liam insists she attends with him. He buys her couture gowns just to attend these galas.

Rory still didn’t find her interest in these luxuries. She would donate them to charity and people would buy her clothes for six digits, minimum. She still doesn’t understand why she is considered a celebrity.

"You should have colored your hair," she said kissing his cheek as he stood up to get to the stage. This guy spends any amount for her, but he won’t even color his hair unless she does it for him.

Liam smiled at her gleefully. Rory was mesmerized by his eyes. His eyes have never changed, nor has the way he looks at her.

Eh, in those bright lights, those little greys won’t be visible...

Rory proudly watched Liam buttoning up his suit jacket and walking up the stairs to that extravagantly resplendent stage. She would never get tired of watching him climb the heights.

He is amazing!

She felt a little vibration in her purse and took a peek in. It was her youngest son, John Francis, named after her father and Liam’s father. He’s their fourth child. He just sent a picture of himself in the library.

He loves studying and got into the Robotics Department of a prestigious university through his own efforts.

Their third child is also a boy. Jeffrey Roberts was born when Liam Jr was ten. John was born the next year.

Jeffrey, Jeff, is a free spirit. The last Rory heard from him was when he was almost caught in the crossfire of the fight between two drug cartels.

He’s a journalist, that’s what he calls himself these days. He loves to go where danger is and he takes pictures. And when he finds people who need help, he will refer them to her. She will do her best to help them.

Not a day goes by when Rory does not worry about him wondering what dangerous situation, he was in.

He calls her at least twice a day to let Rory know where he was and what he was doing. Only then she is able to sleep peacefully.

He was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and underwent therapies. It was a tough time for the family when they learned of his condition. His BPD was not severe. Rory was thankful for that. Jeff tried his best to adjust to society and he is faring pretty well.

Considering their grandfather was a murderous, cannibalistic psychopath, her children turned out pretty well.

Ellie became interested in the company and Liam got her a position at the company. It was no surprise for them when Ellie told them that she was dating Henry. They’re married for five years now.

Henry is a darling. He’s humble. He pampers Ellie more than he should, and even more, than Liam ever did. Ellie grew up as the Princess of the family as she was the only daughter. And now by Henry’s side, she became a queen.

They have a son, and they are expecting a daughter in a month.

Liam Jr, maybe because he was named after his father, followed his father in his every step. He still is following his father. He’s currently his father’s assistant.

Many didn’t understand why Liam didn’t give his son a managerial position in the company when Liam Jr joined the company after getting his business degree from an ivy league university.

But Rory knew that Liam wants their son to get to the top from the bottom just like he did. Only then can he appreciate his position.

And what better way to learn business than being on his father’s side 24/7?

Liam Jr currently has a steady girlfriend, Eva Grace Campbell. She is Ian’s daughter. The entire family was shocked when the twenty-year-old Liam Jr announced to the entire family that he was dating her. No one knew that those two talked to each other.

She was his first and only girlfriend.

He is planning on proposing to her during Christmas. Even Liam doesn’t know, or so Liam Jr told Rory. She was not very sure about that. It’s impossible he kept it from his dad. They are attached at the hips.

All in all, she had a very peaceful life. There were troubling times. There were times when they thought that everything was over.

But it wasn’t. Together they overcame a lot and they are currently in a better place; a place where they didn’t even imagine when they dreamed of their future.

Liam stood on the stage with the glittering trophy in his hand. Rory looked up and clapped along. Liam read the card and his face lit up.

Someone he appreciates enough to smile this much? Who might that be?

Rory got more curious. She didn’t feel jealous though. It’s been a long time since she felt jealous. Liam never let her be unhappy about anything.

They are in their mid-fifties. There are still women who come at Liam. Younger, much more beautiful, vibrant, and sexy women. Liam never looked at them.

He never took his eyes off her. His heart was always leaning toward her more, even though he loved his kids.

"Humanitarian of the Year is..." Liam held the microphone to his chest. "The wind to my sails, the light of my world, my bedrock, my wife, Aurora Roberts!"

Liam said with his hand on his chest. Rory was surprised. She just won a race she never knew she was participating in.

But she was glad though. This was her first award.

She does do some charity work here and there. After her kids grew up, she was very bored. And since she had a lot of money, more than she will ever need, she decided to use it for those who need it more than she did.

She started a charity foundation. She thought she wouldn’t receive many donations, but a lot of people donated, mostly to brown nose Liam. They wanted to get to him through her.

She was proud of Liam.

Unlike many charity foundations, she didn’t pay for the staff from the donations. She spent her own money on the expenses of the charity foundation and used the donations for good causes.

Most of her donations were used for the people her son Jeffrey finds. She had a soft spot for that boy and would do anything for him. And when he smiles seeing everyone happy, she laughed with him.

She didn’t do that to expect any honors or awards. But getting an award is nice. And to get it from her husband’s hands was nicer.

She walked to the stage. Liam was following her with his eyes.

"I don’t know if I’ve talked about my wife enough," he said.

Rory shook her head. "Please, no..." she said.

He never stops talking about her. Even if they award him for his contribution to National Relief Fund, or if he was awarding someone, he will talk about her.

Liam was not stopping.

"My wife doesn’t like it if I say that I had nothing when I met her. She would say that I was an uncut diamond. I should talk about her. We were pretty young when we met... twelve... And I’ve been in love with her for ages..."

Rory walked to him and hugged him. Wrapping his hand around her shoulder, Liam continued, facing the cheering crowd.

"She never anchored me down. She helped me set sail and venture into the deep, vast sea. She was in the boat with me and helped me when there was no wind. And when I was scared, she was the bright Northern light in the night sky and lit my way. My marriage is the bedrock that enabled me to rise to the heights I am today. Words cannot express the gratitude I have for the sacrifices my wife made for me to stand here."

Rory’s eyes watered. She wiped the corner of her eyes to not cry in front of hundreds of people.

"My husband is being a little extra now," Rory said and got the microphone from his hand. She recalled the past.

"Life was not smooth sailing for us. We’ve faced a lot of storms to be here. When I was at the lowest point in my life, when I thought I didn’t need him, I remember looking in awe at this tall building in front of me. I almost went back without meeting him thinking that he was too far up..."

She turned to look at Liam. Had she left that day, she didn’t know what would have happened in their lives.

"And here I am..." she kissed his cheek. "Here I am by his side at the top of the tower... He held my hand, brought me with him, and never let go..."

"Letting go?" Liam interjected her. "Never!"

The emcee joined with a laugh. "Give it up for the most amazing couple!" he said. "And Sir, you haven’t given the trophy to..."

"Ah, yes!" Liam handed the trophy to Rory.

"It doesn’t matter who holds it though," Rory said leaning on Liam.

"What advice would you give to today’s youngsters who are finding it hard to find a proper partner?" the emcee asked.

Liam shrugged and looked at Rory. "Marry your friend, I guess. And make sure to not let go of her hand."

Rory laughed and leaned on his shoulder.

One man’s obsession with her could have ruined their life. But they survived that; they survived storms almost the same as that storm.

And they are here.

On the top.

Just like they wanted to.

Happy, content, and filled with love.
