Chapter 197: Sparing No Mercy
Chapter 197: Sparing No Mercy
"You are planning on publishing your story? I thought you wanted to... get past this," Sidney raised her brows.
Rory rubbed her nose to cover her smile. The desperation on Sidney’s face was nice to look at. Sidney thought the only first-person account of what happened that night would come from her alone. That was her selling point.
Of course, there will be more than one publication that would want to make money from Sidney. But only if she gets to sign the rights of her memoir to the best publishing company will she get paid considerably and would be immune to any lawsuits that might come her way.
And isn’t Sidney adorable to think that she had resigned herself to her bedroom forever? Really? She thought Aurora Roberts would lock herself up in her room for the rest of her life! How silly of her!
"Well..." Rory shrugged. "I do think that way. You see, I have a little girl, and as she grows up... I don’t want her to be seen as the relative of that guy, you see... The abuses, the constant judgment she might face... Whatever she might do, and even if she was wrong out of ignorance, people will blame her blood, as evil and malicious. I don’t want to put my little daughter through that..." Rory sighed.
Sidney bowed her head in shame. Of course, she could understand what Rory was getting to. Putting out a book and signing off to make documentaries of her life, would bring her daughter’s life to the public too. It can’t be helped.
But Rory has money. She does not. Whatever she had she lost because of that monster. He hurt her and ruined her. She knows the rule of life--money is needed. It is for Skyla’s sake that she needs to do this.
And that monster... For everything he put her through, she needs everyone to know what he did. And if she can make money by doing so, why should she not do it? She deserves that money as compensation.
"But..." Rory let out a sigh. "There is this other thought I have too, you know... The trauma I went through, the nightmares, the trust issues, everything... I know there are a lot of women in similar situations, not knowing how to move forward. There are women who have trouble recognizing that they are in the clutches of monsters who are manipulating them. If I share my experiences, who knows how many would be benefited? There might not be many, but~"
"Yes!" Before Rory even finished her sentence, Sidney interrupted her. "That is exactly what I am thinking. How many women who are abused don’t know how to get away? I know how that feels to be trapped and that’s why..."
As she was speaking, her lawyer cleared his throat in an attempt to grab her attention. As that failed, he leaned to her to ask her to stop. But Sidney pulled away from him and continued. Her eyes never left Rory.
Rory had given her a great reason to release her book without any guilt. She cannot tell everyone that she is writing the book for the money and to get back at her husband. But she too can become a hero if she talks about her experiences to help other women.
"...that’s why I am planning on publishing a book in spring, next year. I even hired a ghostwriter, you see. She’s the best. And not many read books these days. An OTT docuseries or a movie would have a much wider reach and I am planning on making sure that my story reaches billions all over the world. I am already in talks with the most popular streaming services and they are very interested in a docuseries that focuses on..." Sidney paused as she saw Rory’s smirk.
"Huh?" Rory nodded. This is what she wanted Sidney to confess. "You’ve made all the arrangements already, huh?" she turned and looked at her lawyer with a smile. "Gosh, you’re so meticulous..." She looked at Sidney.
"By my estimate, a book by you would be worth at least..." she tapped the table with her fingers, "...seven figures in royalties. Plus, the signing bonus, the... movie deals, docuseries deals you are trying to negotiate..."
Rory looked at her lawyer. Her lawyer placed the recording device he had in his pocket on the table. Sidney was surprised, but not her lawyers. This state doesn’t require the other party to be notified before recording. Any recording could be legal. Even if that was not the case, there is the internet.
"Ms. Sidney Roberts on record has stated that she is making deals with publishing companies and movie companies. By our lowest estimates, she is bound to make at least eight figures in the coming two years. She does not need to sue Mr. Fitzwilliam Roberts for financial aid. And if she thinks that Mr. Fitzwilliam Roberts had stolen from Mr. Lennon Roberts’ company, she should prove it in court for we are filing a suit of defamation and slander for fifty million dollars considering her upcoming financial status. And~"
"What the!" Sidney banged the table with her hands and stood up all panicked.
Rory bowed her head and chuckled.
"You!" Sidney lunged at Rory and Rory stood up.
"You do not want to start a fistfight with me, here, Sidney with an ’i’," Rory winked. "You know I’ll win."
Sidney was angered more, and she lunged at Rory more ferociously like a cat. Rory hoped they had booked a table in the restaurant so that it would have ended up on the internet but having this conversation in the presidential suite conference room gave them a good piece of recording.
"You cannot attack our client, Miss," Rory’s lawyer gave a warning. "You are threatening the safety of my client right in front of our eyes. We might have to call the cops on you."
Sidney’s rage multiplied seeing as she was outsmarted by Rory. She is now looking like a fool. That b*tch Rory could hire better lawyers who would record her and even drag words from her mouth, and they are threatening her.
She is going to lose her money!
"I have proof that Liam stole money!" she shouted. She will get what she is entitled to. "The former associates of Liam will all attest to that. Liam~"
"You can prove that in court, Ms. Roberts," Rory’s lawyer interjected her.
Sidney’s lawyers tried to calm her down. Rory took her seat and crossed her legs. She still is not finished. These are the legal restrictions on Sidney.
And there are many illegal methods to destroy Sidney.
"You should get more therapy, Sidney," Rory said in a calm voice. "If you’re hysteric like this when we talk about the legal issues you started with... I worry for your daughter... Are you okay, Sidney?" she asked.
*Wheeee*
Sidney’s loud screech echoed in the room. "What are you planning, witch? Are you recording this? are you planning on taking my daughter? You are a witch! You f*cking ginger witch! Die! Just die! Just because you are influential, do you think you can do anything? I’ll kill you. I’ll burn you at a stake! I’ll rip your heart out and drink your blood, you witch. You are the reason for all my sufferings..." she screamed not minding anyone.
Sidney’s lawyers had to try hard to calm her down. She did calm down only after they assured her that it is not over yet and there is still a chance for her. Yet she was still glaring at Rory.
Rory looked at her lawyers and they led Sidney’s lawyers to the corner of the room.
"Sit," Rory pointed at the chair in front of her. "Let’s talk, Sidney. Like really talk..." she smirked.
Sidney excused herself to go to the bathroom and Rory waited. When Sidney returned, she looked a bit focused.
"For the record, my lawyers won’t be recording this conversation," Rory smiled and turned off the recorder on the table.
Sidney scoffed and sat in front of her.
"You are one greedy b*tch, aren’t you, Sidney with an ’i’?" Rory asked. "And ungrateful one to add!"
Sidney scoffed. "Will gratefulness feed my daughter? Did my integrity save me in the past? Did any of you care for my well-being? Did any of you ask how I was doing? I was waiting...waiting to be rescued and..." Sidney gritted her teeth.
"You never asked for help, Sidney. You only had time for your half-assed remarks and snarky responses. You could have talked to me. Or... if I was not your preferred person, you could have unrobed yourself to Derick earlier and asked for his help," Rory smirked.
Sidney’s face twitched with anger and shame. She couldn’t believe that Derick was talking about that with everyone.
"Now, listen, Let’s talk about the future," Rory leaned forward. "I give you the perfect suggestion for your future, Sidney. I’ll help you enroll in the Witness protection program with government incentives, tax exemption status and all. You can change your name and live your life peacefully somewhere far from here."
