Chapter 195: Need To Step Up

Liam was a little surprised Rory figured out what Sidney wanted without saying much. He wouldn’t have been surprised in the past, but he thought that Rory had gotten a pretty understanding of Sidney after that incident and had gotten so close.

He had seen her talking to Sidney once or twice, just to ask her if she was okay or if she needed help. He heard his wife telling her to ask her for any help that she might need.

And that b*tch wants to sue!

Rory should be a lot more surprised. But she was not. She knows exactly what that ingrate wants. And that means that she has almost returned to how she was before that incident.

She had become very slow in the mind for a brief time. He was glad he came out of it. Whatever she is doing works and she is getting better day by day.

It’s good!

"Why are you so smart, dear?" he held her hand.

"Mmm..." Rory shrugged. "What do you want to do with her?" she asked. She had a feeling that he might have already arrived at a decision. She wanted to know.

Because all she wanted to do now was to destroy Sidney into atoms. But she cannot do that. She wanted someone to calm her down. Whatever Sidney might do, she is the mother of Skyla, and that child needs her mother.

"I don’t know," Liam shrugged. "I can understand that she would be in financial struggles and~"

"Who was representing her?" Rory cut him off.

"The Birmingham Law Firm..."

As he said that Liam raised his eyebrows. The Birmingham law firm is not something that anyone can afford. They represent major companies and conglomerates. For them to talk on Sidney’s behalf, there is more to it.

"Ooh la la," Rory shook her shoulders. "I think I am going to ask the help of my great-spy grandma."

"Are you going to visit her?" Liam asked.

He was told that Agnes’ condition has stabilized but she was not all there. She is forgetting a lot of stuff and Mrs. Delport said that she had to be reminded of everything daily. Agnes would be definitely happy if Rory went there.

"What? No!" Rory shook her head. "I am going to tell them that I need them for their connections. I am not going to give them anything in return. I am going to take and take until..." she sighed seeing Liam’s mocking smile.

She could not keep up this uncaring grandchild farce for long. She is going to keel over and visit her grandma soon. But her pride is stopping her.

"I saw Jake today," Liam said. He was sitting with his hand supporting his cheek and smiling.

"He saw you?" Rory knitted her brows. That cannot be coincidental.

"He said that he is leaving the country," Liam said.

Rory raised her brows. When she learned that no charges were filed against Jake, she was surprised. It took her some thinking to understand what might have happened.

Her grandmother!

When he said that he was not fired, he was not lying. He never left her grandmother’s employment. Only that explains why Jake was there at the right moment and how he forgot about the gun he had in his coat before he passed it to her.

At first, she thought that he wanted to get in the good graces of the cops to escape prison by turning into an informant, but judging by the clean chit he received, she couldn’t deny her grandmother’s involvement.

She was very angry at her grandmother at first, but as days passed, so did her anger toward her grandmother. She is the only relative left on her father’s side. And that poor old woman only has her as a relative. She cannot leave that old lady alone forever. She does not have forever.

She was grateful that her grandmother got to spend some quality time with her daughter before she lost her mind. Her grandma was truly happy when she was with Ellie. That was sure. She only hoped that her grandmother has a peaceful rest of life.

"So..." Liam looked at her.

"Can I handle this issue?" she asked. She needs to step up and do this. It was for her sake and the sake of her family and child. She is not going to let Sidney do whatever she wants to do.

Liam nodded readily. As long as she does not stare at the walls, he wouldn’t mind anything she does. It’s best to keep her mind occupied. And nothing gets his dear wife’s mind occupied like paying back.

"Yes!" Rory jumped up and walked to the kitchen with the plates.

Liam watched her with a satisfied smile. He should get rich once again. His wife deserves to wander around wherever she pleases with no care. He will make it happen. He has a lot of work to do.

Rory took in a deep breath and nodded at the smartly dressed lawyers who were with her. She talked to Mrs. Delport and before she said anything, she mentioned Sidney on her own. She was surprised that she knows about it because she thought that Liam won’t be honest to her about it to protect her.

Well, she was surprised too. But it is obvious that Liam has changed.

Mrs. Delport asked what she wants to be done to Sidney. When Rory told her the plan she came up with, Mrs. Delport went silent. Rory was expecting a long lecture on how that is the dumbest idea and how her grandmother would never have come up.

But she was in for a surprise when Mrs. Delport admired her. And she agreed to help readily.

And here she is, people from a law firm she had heard of once or twice. These are the people who represent the evil guys and at times would make them get away with their white collar crimes. They are experts in finding loopholes in the law and using them against their opponents and giving them a blow so hard that they won’t be able to stand on two feet ever after.

Sidney does not have a chance against these cutthroat lawyers. So does the expensive firm who is representing her.

This whole thing was arranged by her lawyer. She wanted to pay them, but obviously they were already paid by her grandmother. They even arranged the meeting in a five star hotel! It was all so weird for her.

"Shall we?"

The one in the Armani suit asked her. She always forgot his name already out of stress. But he didn’t seem to mind that. He smiled and told her that he has a forgetful name.

Yeah, whatever!

With her back straight, and chin up, Rory walked with the pointed heels making clicking noises against the floor. She was a little nervous to get dressed and enter this place but she was not afraid to face Sidney.

Her confidence only doubled seeing Sidney’s lawyer’s face going pale seeing the guys beside her. They must be well-known in the community, and they needed no introduction. Although the guys with Sidney looked older and more experienced, they fumbled a bit seeing her guys.

Well, I’m a big shot! Who knew?

"Rory!" Sidney too was surprised. "I didn’t expect you to attend this-this meeting. Is- is Liam... Is he?"

"I wanted to meet you, Sidney," Rory smiled widely and pointed at the chair asking her to take a seat.

She knew why Sidney talked to Liam and avoided her. She is the one they want. But she won’t go along with her wishes. And so they were planning on coercing Liam to get her involved.

The law firm that represents Sidney also represents a very big production company and a publishing company. They probably want to release a book and then a movie about the baddest serial killer of this time.

It was one thing Sidney talked to the cops about Rory. But for those who want to make money... whatever accounts Sidney gives them won’t be enough. She can talk about her experiences all she wants to, but she still is not the hero.

Rory was the hero in the story, even in Sidney’s account, after all.

Imagine a story about a wife whose husband was a serial killer. Imagine that she kept his secret because she was "abused" and she was scared. But imagine, there is another woman who is beautiful beyond measure and brave who stepped up to take down a monster to save her husband...

Which story will sell better?

It never was about them telling Sidney’s story. It’s about those vultures trying to get Rory through Sidney. And...they will need Rory’s permission to portray her.

Rory did not know if Sidney could see what those companies want from her. Even if Sidney was a side character, she would still get substantial pay.

But then that would leave ways for Rory to sue the publishing company or the production company. They won’t want that to happen. And they want to hold her husband’s throat to make her comply.

But don’t they know who she is? She is Aurora Roberts. She is not going to bow to threats.
