Chapter 188: Can’t Stay Like This

In the dark corner of Liam’s heart, some dark thoughts brewed. It is natural for a spouse to think that their partner should belong only to them, heart, body, and soul.

To think that someone else laid his hands on her, and not to mention, it was his father...

He stood up and left the room. He didn’t want to stay there. It was depressing to be there.

Ellie bounced back pretty easily, and he decided to stay with their daughter for his own good. Because if he does not look at the smiling face of his dear baby, he was filled with thoughts of murder. He wanted to murder Lennon so badly.

He wanted to kill him with his own hands. His thoughts were so evil and strong. He believed that washing his hands with Lennon’s blood only can douse the fire burning in his heart. Watching Rory drowning in depression only makes him end everything.

But no, he cannot lose his temper. For Ellie’s sake.

Ellie already has Lennon as the grandfather. She, without her contribution, has become the granddaughter of a serial killer who was obsessed with his daughter-in-law. This case has become high-profile now. Everyone knows the name, Lennon Roberts.

The least he could do for his child now is to not add something to her name. He knew what a single mistake from him will do to his child. People will start blaming his blood.

Ellie does not deserve that.

Rory woke up hearing a knock at the door. But she didn’t turn to look who that was. The doctors are useless and she was in the mood to talk to nobody right now. Or ever.

She hoped that whoever that was, would just leave on their own.

She heard a click. That person had entered the room. Along with that, a soft fragrance of peonies filled the room. She wondered if it was Liam. But he won’t knock before entering.

The footsteps of the person walking towards her were soft and slow. She didn’t even care if that person might be here to hurt her. She found that her mind is getting blank a lot these days. She didn’t mind what happens to her most of the time if she was not crying about something.

"My Laura would do that too," the woman’s soft voice made Rory sigh. But Mrs. Brown continued. "...Pretending to be asleep... I’ll wait until you want to talk to me..."

Rory waited for a long time for that woman to get bored and leave. But she pulled a chair and Rory could hear the sound of turning pages.

She did not bring a book to read, did she?

"Guess the agents at the door are just for decorative purposes!" Rory said in a loud voice for the "guards" to hear her. She sat up and faced Mrs. Brown.

"Finally, you woke up. I was almost going to fall asleep," Mrs. Brown chuckled slightly and closed her book. That was a thick book she had in her hand. She was planning to wait for a night. Rory shivered a little at that thought.

But she brought in her fakest smile. She didn’t have the energy to talk to her. She’d rather be rude than spend time with another human being. "The real killer is caught, Mrs. Brown. And my husband was not the killer or in any way involved in the killings. So please don’t invoke my daughter into~"

"They all say that you are a hero. That you were brave and a strong woman who courageously brought a serial killer to justice..." Mrs. Brown said.

Rory gulped as she was lost for words. She felt a sharp pain in her chest as if someone stabbed her in the heart. But Mrs. Brown’s face was filled with gentleness. A smile was hanging by the corner of her lips although she was not trying to. Her eyes were misted, and her cheeks were blushed red giving the impression of a kind old lady.

"Did you know who he was when you left with him? When I blocked you at the parking lot~"

"I’m not a hero or anything. I never thought about anyone else. I did it out of selfishness and distrust. Believe me, that is the truth," Rory said.

It was funny. She... a hero? If she was in the mood to laugh, she would have laughed at that joke. But she was only feeling pain. More than pain, it was guilt.

She left with Lennon of her own volition. And she flirted with him... She enabled him and he tried to...

She thought about it. Those eyes... Those blue eyes that were very similar to Liam’s as they lingered on her body. No, she did not see the resemblance that much. What made her skin crawl was that he looked at her like Liam looked at her.

She hated it. Thinking about that made her cringe.

And it was she who made that happen. She let Lennon look at her that way. It was her fault. Maybe the pictures and the stuff from the past were not her faults. But that day, inside his house, in the cellar, it was all her fault.

That’s what bothered her more. And that’s why she didn’t want to face Liam. Of course, there are many reasons. But this might be the greatest reason that she does not want to look at Liam.

And also, feared Liam. He does not filter his thoughts and one day or another he is going to blame her for willingly leaving with his father only to get forced.

Will he even believe if she tried not to let him touch her? Or will he think that she was willing to do anything?

And the baby...

She left the baby with Mia’s mother. She was told that someone tried to kill her baby when she was in Lennon’s house. She was not with the baby when the baby needed her. She was her blood. And yet she left her to go flirt with her husband’s father knowing that he was her husband’s father.

No wonder no one liked her. She had this wickedness inside her. Maybe everyone says her for who she is too. Maybe that’s why she was left alone and unprotected.

I deserve anything that will happen to me. I don’t deserve any happiness.

There were a lot of thoughts that clouded her mind and made her feel weak. This was one of them. She mostly felt alone, but when there are people around her, she was only snapping at them. She didn’t even know what she wanted anymore.

"Whatever the reason was, you were brave. That is undeniable. You walked into the devil’s lair with no help and~"

"I was not being brave. I was terrified. If I get a do-over by some means, I will not repeat that day the same way. I’m not..."

Rory couldn’t even finish her words. Her mind went blank. She didn’t know if that is okay. Because she did not feel okay. She was so tired. She was sleeping all the time but her brain was working and working putting thoughts in her head.

She wanted to end it all at times. But she couldn’t find the best way to do that.

"And you escaped him while other couldn’t... You exposed him for the monster he is~"

"At the cost of my sanity. I don’t think it was worth it," Rory scoffed. "Look Mrs. Brown, I do not appreciate you entering my room to collect material for your book or interview or whatever. I don’t want to talk to you anymore. Please leave me the f*ck alone. I do not want to talk to you. And I do not think of myself as a noble warrior who bravely brought some monster to its knees... I feel like sh*t. You can f*cking quote me on that.," she glared at her.

She spitted out at the old woman without even knowing the purpose of her visit.

Mrs. Brown let out a deep sigh. "You are not the only ones who thought that I was clinging on to my daughter’s death for money, you know. You, repeating those words I heard over and over, won’t hurt my feelings," she smiled.

Rory gulped. What could she say when the person she insulted is smiling at her? She was frozen.

Mrs. Brown continued with her soft voice. "The reason I didn’t want anyone to forget my daughter’s disappearance and when they told me that they’ve identified her body...And when I learned of the state she was in when they found her..." Mrs. Brown took in a deep breath and her eyes reddened.

"I’m sorry," Rory said. That would have been very hard for her to deal with. The police wouldn’t have let it out, but they probably informed the family that she was murdered brutally and was hacked.

"I wanted justice. I won’t lie and say that I wanted to protect other girls who might end up like my daughter. All I wanted was to make sure that monster gets the same treatment my daughter got during her last moments...." Mrs. Brown sniffed. "I didn’t want him to live peacefully after killing my daughter."

"How...What made you think that it was Liam?" Rory asked.
