Chapter 153: Erosion of Distance

Chapter 153: Erosion of Distance

Rory was in deep thoughts and mostly she was afraid. Everyone she knows and loves is warning her against doing anything alone maybe because they see the bigger picture.

Her heart pounded and she wanted to retreat. She loves Liam and hopes that. But is it worth risking everything? All she could now think of is Ellie. Without Liam and without her, what will happen to her?

She did not want what happened to her to happen to her daughter too. She didn’t want to leave her daughter to be raised by someone else, even if they are her relative and someone she trusts.

No one can replace their parents.

"Rory?"

Lennon’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts, and she picked up Ellie to get down from the aircraft. She saw that they’d parked at the far end of the airport in the private aircraft section, closer to the exit.

It was evening when she landed, and the entire place was illuminated with the golden orange evening sunlight. She knew that what appeared to be fog at the distance was just pollution. She could smell the burnt smell of exhaust even in the empty airstrip.

As far as she looked, there weren’t any cameras. This would be the best place for celebrities who want to travel without alerting the paparazzi, and also those who are trying to hide something.

For example...

Rory turned to look at Jake as he opened the luggage compartment. Another guy joined Jake in helping Jake carry the luggage.

"I’ll drop you. You are going to Georgetown, right?" Lennon asked turning Rory’s attention to him.

Rory didn’t know what to say. She had other plans before she goes to Lennon’s place.

"Sir, we have an appointment with our Netherlands investor in an hour," Jake reminded him.

Jake was behind Rory and Lennon looked over her shoulder at Jake. Lennon contemplated for a moment and then he nodded looking at his watch.

"I’m sorry, Rory. I will have to..."

"It’s fine, uncle," Rory smiled. "I’ll take a cab."

She’d feel more comfortable that way too.

"No, no... My chauffer..." Lennon waved his hand and the guy with Jake came running. "Drop her at the Georgetown apartment. Tell the security that she is my...guest and her presence there will be a secret..." Lennon said and took out his wallet.

Rory watched him count five hundred-dollar bills and he gave them to the chauffeur. "For the security."

Rory was surprised to learn that building securities could get $500 tips. And since it appeared that the security wouldn’t allow her in if she goes there alone, she didn’t refuse Lennon’s offer.

She was rather surprised when Lennon mentioned that he had an apartment in the not-so-rich part of the city. But it all made sense now, at least some of it.

"Thank you so much, uncle," she hugged him.

Lennon hugged her close. A little closer than usual. "I’m here for you. Remember that," he said, still not letting go.

Rory stayed in his embrace as long as he wanted to. He was definitely acting very differently from the past. She too. "I will," she said, closing her eyes and taking in his scent.

Her voice was low and devoid of the little distance she always kept between herself and others in the past. She knew her boundaries, but she saw the boundaries now slowly eroding. She let Lennon take the place she only let Liam in.

She needs his help, a lot. In this place, only he can help her.

"I won’t take long," Lennon said pinching her chin. Her glassy eyes reflected the golden sun and she nodded, expressing her gratitude in her eyes.

Carrying Ellie, she walked to the car parked some meters away. She didn’t expect the chauffeur to open the door for her and safely buckled Ellie in before taking her seat. She looked at Lennon as she wore her seatbelt. He was still standing firm in the same spot he was when she left him. He probably was staring at her the whole time.

With a small smile, she waved her hand. Lennon waved back putting his other hand inside his pockets.

His posture and the smile...

Rory looked to the front as the car started moving. Jake, although appeared to be calm, was keeping an eye on the both of them. That suitcase he tried hard to get in... he was still holding on to it.

Maybe it was a mirage or a weird result of staring at a stationery thing from a moving car, Rory thought she saw the suitcase moving. It was just for a fleeting fraction of a second and she cleared her throat and waved once more at Lennon.

Suitcases don’t move.

As instructed by Lennon the chauffeur took her to Georgetown. She knew the route and she was relaxed on the ride although she did not know the person. Also, she is not riding a cab to be skeptical. She is riding in her uncle’s car.

Uncle...Hmm...

Rory stared through the window in deep thought. Her heart sank and she felt something crawling over her skin. But she composed herself and dialed Bobby to inform him that she reached safely. He was happy that she called and both of them didn’t mention the money she received from Bobby.

As she was talking to Bobby, she received a call from Derick. She knew what this would be about. She didn’t answer him and switched off her phone. She didn’t want Derick to track her whereabouts.

The car stopped at the entrance of the apartment Lennon mentioned. It was not very old and shabby as she expected it to be. In fact, it was not very different from Mia’s place. She laughed at herself for thinking that Lennon would stay in some dilapidated building.

She got inside the building and the security stopped her. But seeing the chauffeur, he let her inside after looking at her up and down in a weird way. He even tried to control his snort when he saw the baby in her hand.
