Chapter 127: The Arrest

"Skyla... He’ll..." Sidney mumbled and Rory tried to listen closely.

"What is it, Sidney? Did something happen?" She asked.

But Sidney stared blankly at the ceiling. Perspiration wetted her forehead and she gulped.

"Nothing... It’s nothing..." Sidney said. "I’ll be fine. I’m fine... I am just sleepy, so... "

"Okay then, Sidney. Rest for a while...I’ll ask Claire to have an eye on Skyla for you, alright?" Rory spoke gently and after making sure that Sidney was calm, she left the room.

Rory closed the door and immediately winced and looked at her arm that was pinched by Sidney. Her fingernails had broken her skin making her skin sting. She got angry.

"I really am not a very considerate person..." Rory muttered and walked down the stairs.

She could only care enough to hurt herself only when it involves her eejit husband and her adorable daughter. Others are not worth that trouble.

She decided to hand over Sidney to her husband who loves her a lot and handles her mood swings perfectly.

When she got down the stairs, everyone was gathered in the living room and they all looked stressed. She could see colorful lights flashing inside the living room.

Blue and red lights...

Her heart skipped a beat and she looked through the window. As she expected, the cops were already there and she saw many media vans pulling up in front of their house. The road in front of the house was very congested as the vehicles from the lumber company were still passing through.

"Rory, don’t worry..." Frank walked toward her and Rory sighed seeing the rifle in his hand.

Surely he is not planning on shooting the cops, does he?

"I am fine, uncle... Let’s not cause trouble. Let them take him peacefully," she said.

She heard Ellie crying. She looked terrified as if she realized that something is wrong. She ran to Penny and got Ellie.

"I’ll get him..." Rory walked up the stairs.

When she took a peak through the window, she could see that the cops were walking in with their weapons drawn out.

"There... there... Let’s find dad, alright!" Rory said patting Ellie.

When she got to their room, she saw Liam dressed up and he was staring blankly at the mirror.

Hearing her walking in, Liam looked at her. "The lawyer called. They are going to take me to LA and he said he sent his assistants for me now. The cops..."

"They are here," Rory said and walked to him. "Here, kiss your daughter," she passed Ellie to him.

Liam got Ellie and hugged her close to his chest. Rory joined in the hug. She held his hand which was cold to touch.

"I’ll be there soon, Fizzy. We’ll handle it together." She said it.

She knew she is repeating it a lot of times, but she wanted to remind Liam again and she didn’t want him to ever feel like he is alone. She wanted him to be filled with hope.

"I don’t want you to..." Liam’s voice shook. "I’ve lost everything... I don’t want to lose you two too..." he said.

"You haven’t lost everything then, have you? You still have us. No matter what others say, we are here for you. So don’t mind anything. Focus on keeping yourself out of trouble," Rory rubbed his back.

She was struggling hard not to let out the tears that were collecting in her eyes. She knew if she breaks down, his hopes will become nonexistent.

She might not understand the extent he will be hurt by the accusation that he hurt a woman. But she did not want him to lose hope.

"You stay here. I don’t want you to see me in..." Liam’s lips trembled and Rory hugged him.

"Okay, I’ll stay here with Ellie... But you, be careful..." she hugged him around his neck.

She didn’t want to let him go. But she could hear the commotion from downstairs. Liam had to forcefully get out of her hold and walked out of the room, closing the door.

Rory plopped on the bed and burying her face in the duvet, screamed her heart out. Ellie started to scream as she could see Rory shouting and Rory picked her up wiping the snot on her face.

"Back to how it was again..." Rory mumbled.

She was so happy with Liam around her for sharing her parental responsibilities. She was happy and like a dream, those days are gone now. And she is back to how she lived when she thought that Liam never loved her.

She sniffed and took in a deep breath. "We cannot cry, Ellie. We have to work hard to bring dad back home," she hugged her.

She cannot break down now. Now is the time she needs to be strong.

She didn’t leave the room, but she checked the local news. All of the news organizations had sent their correspondents to film the arrest of the rising entrepreneur. She checked every channel and they all were live broadcasting the arrest of Liam.

She saw Liam walking out with his hands behind his back, cuffed, and his face covered with a baseball hat. The news organizations were posting pictures of her along with Liam’s as they could not find her in the live broadcast.

She didn’t care about her face being broadcasted. She could not bear to see Liam walking with his head bowed in shame. The reporters with the cameras pushed and shouted to have him react so that they would have a better picture of him. The cops dragged him to the car. Liam almost slipped and fell when he was getting inside the car.

She felt like someone was tearing her heart like a sheet of paper and crushing them under their feet.

She wanted to see Liam in a lot of ways. As a criminal was not one of them!

She contacted the lawyer to make sure he is on it. The lawyer was sending notifications and updates, but she was not sure if it is fine for Liam to go with the cops without the lawyer.

What if they end up hurting him?

She knew there are laws against hurting the one who was charged with a crime and under police custody. But what if something goes wrong?

She heard a gun go off in the front of the house and her heart skipped a beat. She ran to Derick’s room to take a peak at the front of the house. Her room only had a view to the back and the road that led into the forest.

She was surprised to see grandma Roberts with a shotgun threatening the reporters to get off her property. She shot at the sky a couple more times and only then did the reporters who were waiting to get Rory’s statement disperse from the front yard.

But they did not leave. They stayed on the road. But they were greatly inconvenienced by the trucks and loggers who were using that road.

Since the road was narrow in front of the house, the press had to move away from the house. Rory was thankful for the presence of the loggers.

She sat on the bed, humming a song for Ellie. She does not sing often. She only sings when she is asked to. She did not know why she was singing. There was an odd feeling creeping in the bottom of her heart and she wanted to hear something to not think anymore.

So she sang.

Ellie fell asleep. Rory did not want to leave her in the crib. She wanted to keep on hugging someone. But she knew it won’t be right to inconvenience her baby for her comfort.

As she was rocking herself to comfort herself, she saw her phone blinking. It was Mrs. Delport and she answered the call.

"I saw the news..." Mrs. Delport said.

"Yeah... I am..."

"Don’t worry. He did nothing wrong and he won’t be charged. Have faith in our law and justice system," She said.

Rory rolled her eyes. "I have no f*cking faith in this f*cking country’s laws or the corrupted justice system!"

"Language, lady!" Mrs. Delport corrected her.

"Heh! Of course..." Rory scoffed. Of course, she will be more worried about my knowledge than about my husband!

"He is already charged for r*pe, Mrs. Delport! Apparently, the proof is not needed these days. Evidence is secondary. Some belated statement from a friend who sprung up out of nowhere is enough to charge a man with a heinous crime he didn’t commit! And yeah, I will repeat what I said. F*ck your justice system!"

Rory ended the call and threw the phone on the bed. She knew the next word coming out of Mrs. Delport’s mouth would be about her homeland and how they treated her parent’s accident. She was not in the mood to listen to that.

Rory was so mad. She paced to and fro inside her room. Liam’s family came and talked to her to make sure she is fine. And she calmed down a bit.

It was then she remembered something.

Asking Claire to look after Ellie in case she wakes up, Rory ran to her grandma’s house. Mrs. Delport was not happy to leave the house empty and it made her wonder.

She wanted to check it out. She stepped out and she could not take the car because the press were there. For some reason, they were hellbent on getting her pictures.

She used the shortcut.
