Chapter 88: Escape the Eastern Kingdom
When he was finally done, Aleksander withdrew himself from Elys, licking his lips as he savored the tiny drops of blood from deeper cuts he tried to heal.
The princess’ arm was now almost fully healed. Save from the deepest cut on her right shoulder that needed more than just vampire saliva, everything else were as if the wounds weren’t there in the first place.
Vampire saliva was very potent for minor injuries, but it would take more than just licking or even spitting a wad of saliva at a bigger wound for it to heal.
"Is this some sort of apology without words?" Elys asked as she stared at her pale arm that was now fully healed.
Aleksander almost took a double take. His face was flushed with embarrassment, and Elys could see him blush like he was sunburnt. The prince’s alabaster skin didn’t really make the best of colors to hide a blush at all.
The princess found herself chuckling from the bastard prince’s blunder.
"Fine then," she said as she stood up, "I will accept this apology for the meantime you sort your pride out."
The princess walked away from Aleksander, and he watched her as she went towards Cordelia.
"Bandage this for me, Cordelia," Elys said as she handed over the extra pieces of fabric she cut off into strips with her dagger. "Make sure to cover what is needed, and make it quick."
"Understood, your highness," Cordelia said.
Elys sat down and Cordelia immediately went off to work on bandaging the deeply cut wound on the princess’ right shoulder. The old woman carefully pulled Elys’ top to the side and a bit downwards so she could dress her wound much efficiently.
"Would you have the decency to go away, Henry?" Cordelia asked as she noticed that the attendant was practically still nearby.
"Ah, yes... right. I will go to his highness then," Henry mumbled.
His words were almost incoherent, but both of the women were able to get the gist of it – he was going to scurry over to the bastard prince.
The attendant went over to the prince, and right off the bat, noticed the flustered look Aleksander had. Henry was taken aback, almost laughing even, but was able to hold himself back from doing so.
He had never seen Aleksander look the way he did at the moment.
It was as if Henry saw a teenage boy who was able caught peeking at a lady taking a bath down the river. The attendant couldn’t help but feel amused. He turned his eyes to the princess with the maidservant, and a smile slowly tugged at the corners of his mouth.
"What happened, your highness?" asked Henry.
He sat down beside the still flustered vampire prince, the rush of blood to his pale face very much visible. The prince didn’t look Henry straight in the eye, and that was when the attendant knew his master was at a loss.
The prince always donned a mask of strength and arrogance.
"What did the slave princess say to make you look like a ripe tomato, your highness?" Henry teased a bit.
The vampire prince scowled at the joke Henry added to his question. He didn’t appreciate that he had to point it out when he knew Aleksander was denying it to himself.
"Henry," Aleksander said, his eyes staring at the twinkling waters, "I messed up bigtime. The slave princess... no..." he shook his head, "my wife, she is actually the only daughter of the Northern Warrior’s king."
"Hahaha! That’s a funny joke your highness," Henry laughed, a bit hysterical that the prince could actually think of something like that to say. "There is no – you are serious?"
The attendant saw the furrowing of Aleksander’s brows. When he was in deep thought, this always happened and his thick brows would almost form a bridge as the more serious the situation is, the closer his brows would come together.
"When am I not serious, Henry?" asked Aleksander, "I’d be glad to give you a raise should you be able to mention a moment I was joking."
The old man swore there were several occasions Aleksander was in a lighter mood and joked around, but the moment didn’t seem like the appropriate time at all to fight the prince. Anyways, it was just a small thing.
Just as Aleksander was about to add something to say, the prince suddenly froze and his ears twitched three, four times on both sides.
"They are getting closer," Aleksander said. He closed his eyes and then listened in on the activities of the Eastern people, "It looks like fifteen people marching towards the room connected here. Five trackers, and handlers."
Henry was instantly alarmed, and called out to Elys and Cordelia, "We need to move! The Eastern people are on our tail."
Cordelia was about done with bandaging Elys’ shoulder, and she quickly tied a ribbon to seal it off. The princess dashed over towards Prince Aleksander and Henry; all the while Cordelia promptly followed her lead.
"Your highness, what are we to do? It seems like there are no exits here," Cordelia asked.
"Our efforts to get rid of our scent wasn’t that much effective after all," Elys added.
"It was worth a shot out of nothing at all," Aleksander snapped.
The princess crossed her arms, and Aleksander quickly looked away as he tried to search for a possible exit point. The roofs were too high for them to reach, and they didn’t exactly know which part of the kingdom the terrain they would reach above if they did try to dig their way up.
The walls of the cave were solid rocks eroded by natural means, and then Aleksander stared at the pool in the middle.
Its waters rippled, a slight breeze from somewhere pushing the surface of the water to move ever so lightly.
"Wait, the water rippled... wind... there must be a hole somewhere in here that keeps on blowing," Aleksander suggested.
He was sure of it, a secret passage that would lead to their escape from the Eastern Kingdom.
