Chapter 63: A Pack of Wolves Isn’t Good

There was an undeniable glow out there. As the carriage came closer, the glowing orbs multiplied into several pairs, and Henry started to panic.

"Did that just blink?" he asked. "Did that just blink?!"

"Don’t panic, you idiot, you are screaming my ear off!" Cordelia complained, her forehead wrinkled as her brows knitted together in annoyance.

"It just blinked," Henry repeated, still unable to process Cordelia’s words as the horses continued to run forward.

"Many predators feed on fear," Cordelia tried to talk to him logically, "I thought you already know that as an attendant to a vampire. Prince Aleksander should be feared more than animals."

Quite unexpectedly, Cordelia felt Henry reach out to her arm and gripped her firmly, trying to ground himself to something strong and stay calm. If Cordelia wasn’t concentrating on the road ahead, she would have already howled in laughter.

But the situation seemed too serious to tease the old man.

Even with his cowardly episodes, Henry was a trusted and useful attendant. He was far easier to manipulate too. If he had a heart attack because of her teasing, Cordelia feared the attendant that would replace him wouldn’t be as easy to push around.

Growls rose in the air, and with it the hairs of the two servants in front of the carriage stood up as they announced together, "Wolves!"

Just as they had yelled it out loud, the glowing eyes that previously were stationary, started to move about. One by one, they emerged into the road and blocked the carriage from going further.

"Stop right there!" one of the wolves bared his sharp canines, drool dripping to the ground.

Cordelia pulled the reins to halt the horses, and the carriage skidded to a full stop, dust and tiny bits of earth scattering around. Several other wolves emerged from the bushes to their side.

The maidservant was taken aback. A wolf just spoke to her! And with a voice that was vaguely reminiscent to that of a human too!

"A werewolf!" Henry gasped beside her, still holding on to her arm.

The knights that followed the carriage unsheathed their weapons, ready to defend the prince and princess. They might have been one of the lowest ranked knights in the kingdom, but they were formidable too if it came down to it.

"How dare you block the way of Prince Aleksander Ardorlean?" one of them stepped up to fill in the role of Teo who was still nowhere to be seen.

They heard the wolves snicker, and the leader spoke once more, "How funny. Why would the Western Prince come to the Eastern Kingdom? The Queen never accepted such a vile visitors."

The maidservant gripped the reins tighter. What was she supposed to do? Should she keep moving or should they listen to what the werewolves have to say?

She reached out to her side, where she had strapped an axe that she had taken from one of the dead bandits from earlier. If they were forced into another fight, she needed to be armed. There was only so much her bare hands could do.

The compartment that allowed the coachman and his passengers to communicate slid open, "What happened?" came Elys’ voice.

"A pack of werewolves just blocked the carriage from moving further, your highness," Cordelia spoke as calmly as she could.

Elys’ heart sank. Aleksander was right. Them meeting the werewolves one way or another had turned true.

But why did they bother to stop the carriage?

They could have just ambushed them if they were just there to defend their territory. Could it be that her hunch was true that the werewolves were working for the Eastern Queen? If so, they must take precautions with their words and actions.

The leader of the pack, a huge wolf with brown fur and a huge scar over his right eye, moved forward. He didn’t look too menacing as what Cordelia first thought, but he did exude in himself a sense of superiority.

"You in the carriage, slowly step out," the alpha demanded.

Aleksander grit his teeth. His nails scratched the wooden wall of the carriage, and Elys could tell his emotions were getting ahead of him again. She reached out to his hand, and his eyes widened in shock.

"Let’s take this slowly," she whispered, "my hunches might be wrong, it might be right. We will get through with this, but you need to keep your cool until we know for sure."

The prince nodded, and they slowly stepped out of the carriage.

The alpha’s eyes stared at the princess as she landed effortlessly without anyone else’s help. She had rejected one of the knights that presented himself to help her down. Her eyes caught the alpha staring, and she held her gaze steady.

The alpha was impressed. It was a first for him to see a woman so independent. Many of those that rode fancy carriages never did come down without the help of a man.

"Let us pass, mutt," Aleksander said as he waved the Western Kingdom’s emblem for the wolf to see, "you have no business blocking us from a diplomatic trip."

The werewolf snorted, "You are one cocky prince with no manners."

Elys stepped forward and spoke, "I apologize for my husband’s behavior. We have been travelling for almost a day with minimal stops. We had been attacked by bandits; everyone is cranky as it is -"

Aleksander made a move to cut her off, but Elys held him back with a stern look. The prince raised a brow of incredulity, but then just crossed his arms instead.

"I must be crazy... but go on," he muttered, giving Elys a chance to finish what she had to say.

Slowly, the prince was getting charmed by the princess’ strong demeanor. It had annoyed him at first, but she has proved yet again that she wasn’t just all talk – she truly meant business.

"So, Mr. Werewolf, if you don’t have any particular reason for blocking us, then please step aside and let us through," Elys continued, her voice cold and authoritative.

The werewolf whistled, and then stood up on both his hind legs as what a man would do.
