Chapter 226: Baby Got Reversed In Time

Swinging her whole body away from her husband, Elys jumped at least two meters away from him.

"Gakh!" Aleksander was thrown off balance as his wife pushed him away from her.

He stumbled backwards, his whole six footer build slamming butt first to the ground. The vampire couldn’t understand what was happening at all.

What was Elys talking about when she asked him what happened? He couldn’t remember doing anything at all.

Had he spaced out back there?

On the other hand, at the other side of the sea of grasses, Aleksander’s confused and hurt expression made Elys question her moves. She couldn’t find an explanation, but her body was reacting to the whispers in her head to get as far away from her husband.

She unsheathed her sword from its scabbard, its long and shiny blade glinting in the dimly lit forest. The ex-warrior princess swung her sword and cleared her immediate surroundings from the tall grasses that blocked her view.

"Wife, what are you doing?" Aleksander called out to her.

Elys didn’t reply to her husband’s question but instead looked up towards the trees. She swore she saw something jumped from one branch unto another, a dark silhouette that looked vaguely like a human or perhaps about the size of one.

Aleksander reached Elys with just a few steps, wading through the tall grasses as he followed the sound of her beating heart. He saw her with her face scrunched up in an ugly scowl.

"Wife, what the fuck?!" Aleksander grumbled.

"What the fuck, yourself, Aleksander," Elys said as she squinted her eyes upwards. "Stay away from me for a while, I don’t trust you when you don’t even remember what happened to you."

"But I wasn’t doing anything!" he said as he took a step forward.

Elys backed up from where she stood and then pointed her sword at Aleksander, "Don’t even try, husband. Stay away until I figure it out what happened to you. I am not risking what happened back at the Eastern Kingdom repeat itself."

Recalling the events of what happened to their first and perhaps last political travel to the Eastern Kingdom, Aleksander frowned at the thought of it.

Was Elys pointing out the part where he lost all control of himself?

The young queen’s eyes glanced momentarily at her husband’s face and she said, "I don’t want to fight you, husband, but for our safety, we better keep away from each other even just a few meters apart."

The corners of Aleksander’s mouth dropped down into a frown. His lips parted as his mouth opened but immediately closed again. He was about to protest against Elys’ order, but thought at the last minute not to speak at all.

Thinking that it was best to keep a safe distance from each other despite his initial protest, Aleksander stayed put from where he was and the vampire king turned his head towards where his wife was staring at.

Up in the tree branches, something was truly moving. It was jumping from one branch unto another, but they couldn’t quite catch its entire figure as it moved too fast – even for Aleksander’s eyes.

"This thing is definitely not a Western Kingdom citizen," Aleksander whispered towards Elys.

"A monster?" Elys asked, keeping wary of both the figure above them and her husband that she was suspicious of.

She knew her husband well, but the figure in the trees – not so much. The only thing that was ever recognizable about it is that it had three glowing bloodshot eyes which peeked over the leaves that covered him from their view.

The figure, upon noticing that the two had seen it moving about, growled at them.

Aleksander did not recognize the growl from any of the animals or monsters that he had ever encountered in the Western Kingdom’s forests during the limited times he had escaped Henry and wandered out of the capital.

’Is this some sort of wild animal or is this truly a beast that is being controlled by the Eastern Kingdom?’ Elys found herself asking at the back of her mind.

Both Elys and Aleksander knew that the Eastern Kingdom boasted their strong connection between their flora and fauna, with each citizen actually having an animal companion.

"Alright, I think it is high time that that thing – whatever the hell that is – comes down and take a bow in front of the Western King and Queen," Aleksander muttered under his voice.

For all he cared, it could just be a monkey, but the monkeys that lived in the Western Kingdom’s forests were not anything like this. They could never move as fast as to trick a vampire’s keen eyesight.

Whatever this thing up in the trees were, it was something foreign from their kingdom.

The explosions started to erupt more frequently from either side of where Elys and Aleksander were, but at this very moment, they were pretty occupied with this ’beast’ hiding in the tree branches, observing them with its bloodshot eyes.

Elys raised her sword and was ready to defend herself if the figure suddenly starts attacking them. Raising her hand, the young queen started to chant a quick spell.

She sent a series of white laser-like blasts towards the trees, trying to hit the figure that was looming menacingly up in the dense canopies. Her attack hit several large branches, and even larger tree trunks.

It goes to say that not much was left of the parts of the trees that Elys’ magic hit. Smaller ones disintegrated with just a passing light, whereas larger branches and trunks exploded or split in half.

Splinters scattered and leaves fell in a flurry of fresh and dead colors.

"What the hell, why can’t I hit this bastard," Elys grumbled as she continued to sent blast after blast of her magic towards the figure above them.

At some point an angry yowl echoed from the trees and the said figure dropped in a series of loud cracks of the branches it hit on the way down.

The couple exchanged looks as they heard a muffled thud over where the figure had dropped over. Aleksander unsheathed his sword as well, and with a nod to his wife, the two of them began slicing through the grasses.

Once they saw the wriggling body of something black and wrinkly, Aleksander raised his sword sideways to block Elys from taking any further steps towards the figure.

"Why is it curled up like a baby?" Elys found herself asking out of the blue. "It shouldn’t be the case after falling several meters up the tree tops."

"Perhaps he got lucky and the branches turned out to be the reason he could move and curl up like this," Aleksander replied with a disappointed grunt.

"Let’s take a quick look and head off towards the explosions," Elys prompted the young king, "If this is rather insignificant to the real reason we are here, then let us move on."

Aleksander nodded in agreement with his queen, and slowly lowered his sword which had prevented her from taking any further steps forward.

The couple took only two steps closer towards the figure that was huddled up in a ball, skin wrinkly and looking old rather than muscled and toned like most tree dwelling animals like those of the monkeys Aleksander had first thought it was.

Its back was facing them, and they couldn’t tell what it really was from behind. It had a tail, but it was indistinguishable considering that the animal had it tucked between its legs. It sorts of looked human, but with less hair in its head and was entirely naked all together.

"It looks kind of like a..." Elys noted as they got closer and closer.

"A baby that got reversed in time," Aleksander made a quick snide joke.

Elys didn’t laugh at his words, but instead waited patiently for an opportunity to move in closer. As they stood a few steps away from the curled figure, Aleksander prodded it with the tip of his scabbard.

It didn’t make a tiny move at all.

"I think its dead," Aleksander said, "I don’t hear its heart beating at all."

"Then let’s get going," Elys said, "and don’t forget to stay several meters away from me."

Aleksander frowned at her words, but complied nonetheless. He didn’t want to risk her safety too if by chance the Eastern Kingdom’s forces had tricked them in this dense forest.

They could have snuck behind them without even getting noticed, as they were completely magicless and in turn could have slipped past Elys who was making sure no one with strong magic was near them – or at least was looking out for anyone who was strong enough to fight them.

Screams erupted from further away as another explosion took off. The young king and queen recognized the screams of the knights, and they started running like crazy towards the screams.

Everything that happened afterwards was quite a blur.

The couple was suddenly hit by something that felt like a boulder crushing them, losing consciousness as they fell to the ground.
