Chapter 223: Not What They Agreed Upon

"Make way for the King Aleksander and Queen Elysianne! Make way, make way!"

Men and women heard the trumpets and then the palace knight announcing the royal couple’s arrival.

Elys and Aleksander rode into the capital and saw the concerned faces of the kingdom’s residents. As how it looked, the news of the attacks had made the vampires restless, a number wanting to get answers from the King and Queen who were riding off to the borders themselves.

"Your majesty, what is the meaning of this?" a vampire woman asked with terror in her eyes.

"How come the borders are being attacked?" another asked.

Thinking that it was absurd, several of the kingdom’s residents – especially that from the capital – thought that Aleksander was truly cursed.

An old looking vampire raised his fists up in the air and hounded the knights that first passed them by, "This shouldn’t have happened at all! You are all slacking up there in the palace!"

"Sir Wiriam should have sat on the throne instead, now we are all doomed!" someone added.

"The prophecies were real after all! Disasters and troubles came our way ever since you returned to the palace – gah!"

A knight kicked the vampire that had shouted his frustrations. He was thrown to the sides, hitting the wall with a loud crack. Gasps rose from the crowd and slowly the shouts turned into murmurs instead.

"Keep your filthy mouth shut if you don’t want to die!" the knight said at the disrespectful crowd. "The King and Queen deserves your utmost respect!"

Dissatisfaction was evident with the scowls that scattered about every face that Aleksander and Elys could see. Several shouts of anger from the farthest corner of the streets were audible as well.

Obviously, Aleksander tried his hardest to stop himself from reacting. He didn’t have the time to waste with vampires who were useless and didn’t contribute to the safety of the kingdom.

They were all just sentient flesh who drank blood and did nothing else but to fatten themselves up in comfort.

"Keep going, dear husband," Elys said as she whipped her horse, making the beast bolt forward.

"I am doing my best," Aleksander replied through gritted teeth.

He kicked his horse and quickly caught up with his wife who was riding like there was no tomorrow. The sun was nearly rising in about an hour, and Aleksander was careful to actually bring a heavy-duty mask and a cape for safety purposes.

They passed through the capital gates and had soon joined the knights who were being sent to back up the knight commanders around the borders.

Aleksander saw a familiar face and promptly went ahead of Elys. He called the attention of the knight who rode with several hundred more, and the vampire turned his head to look at the young king.

In surprise, the vampire knight’s eyes widened as he didn’t think that the King and Queen themselves would get out of the palace and ride with them.

"Your majesty," he inhaled sharply, "what are you two doing here?"

"We are riding with the rest to take a look at the southernmost border of the kingdom," Aleksander said.

The young king turned to one of the knights that accompanied them, "What are you doing? Make an announcement and tell the rest of those in the front to make way for my queen and I."

"Forgive me, your majesty," the knight stuttered.

The knight rode to the front and started commanding the other knights to make way.

"The King Aleksander and Queen Elysianne will pass through! Make way, make way!" the knight announced, "pay your respects and make way!"

Soon the knights who were also riding as fast as the wind started to part. They created a space in between where Aleksander and Elys, as well as their company of knights came passing through.

Elys and Aleksander whipped their horses to go faster, and eventually passed by the other knights straight for the southernmost border.

They passed through several more towns, and during that short period of time that passed them by like a blur, Elys could tell how much of the human population were affected by this fucking attack on their borders.

There was even a time that someone got down on their knees in front of the royal couple and was almost run over by large horses. The mere power of a single horse’s kick was nothing compared to vampire’s cruelty, but an injury was an injury no matter how one would try to compare it.

"Your majesty, Queen Elysianne!" a woman called out to her, "Please help us all!"

Elys noted the light toned skin and ash blonde hair from the woman. Her eyes were sunken and her body so tiny and looked extremely fragile.

"Stand up, my beloved subject," Elys said as she tugged at her horse’s reins so it would stop running.

She waited for the woman to stand up and once she was able to, Elys reached out a hand and tapped the woman’s head softly, "Don’t worry, this will all be a worth it fight, and you all wouldn’t have to suffer nor face any trouble."

The woman wept and was convinced that Elys was all of the human’s only hope from the endless torture and slavery. She walked away and waved at Elys and Aleksander’s entourage as they passed by and continued off to the southernmost border.

As soon as they were out of the last town that was under jurisdiction of the whole Western Kingdom, there was only a long winding road ahead. It was not an easy trail as instead of stone path, the only thing that guided them were the tall grasses that were on both sides of them.

The young king himself was pretty much preoccupied during the long stretch of road leading to the furthest border of the kingdom.

"Aleksander, what are you thinking?" Elys asked her husband all of a sudden.

Her husband veered his eyes towards his queen who was just beside him and riding her horse, and then smiled forcefully.

"I was merely thinking of the grasses here, my queen," Aleksander murmured in response, not really thinking straight with what he gave his wife as an alibi.

Thinking that there must be really something that was bothering him, Elys tried to trick Aleksander into spilling whatever it was and started asking him several questions that lead to his real worry.

As it turned out, Aleksander was actually carrying with him the curses and angry words that were thrown at him during their passing through the capital.

"You are dwelling way too much on words coming from mouths that don’t matter," Elys tried to soothe her husband’s worries. "You should focus on our sole mission today, Aleksander. Now, do you get it, Aleksander?"

"You are right, Elys," he agreed with his wife, "we need to see for ourselves the extent of this invasion!"

The young king roared his instruction and started to motivate the knights they were with.

"We are already more than halfway from the palace towards the southern border," he yelled at the top of his lungs.

"Alright, now make haste!" the knight who had been yelling for announcements had inserted himself into the busy chatters of Elys, Aleksander and his fellow knights.

Even before all the knights could kick their horses to make them run faster, a huge blast suddenly exploded somewhere along west of where all of them were going.

Elys and Aleksander’s head whipped to the source of the huge explosion, and their knights soon followed suit, craning their necks as they watched the smoke rise from the distance.

Another set of explosions made Elys’ ruby eyes widen, and without much thinking, went full throttle ahead towards the explosion.

"My queen, wait for me!" Aleksander called her out, whipping his horse with his sword’s scabbard.

When the young king was running at the same pace as Elys and her horse, Aleksander started to ask Elys series of questions, "Where are you going on your own? You are not supposed to go all alone, Queen Elysianne!"

Elys merely glanced at her husband and said, "I don’t remember any mention of that when you had my ladies in waiting dress me up for battle, my king."

"You threatened me that we either ride to battle together or you go alone, my queen!" the vampire king screamed in protest, "This is not what he agreed upon."

Aleksander could not believe what he was hearing.

Elys was definitely being as hotheaded and incorrigible as she was at the moment.

The knights that were closely following them chased after their King and Queen. They were all supposed to go to the southernmost part of the border, and yet the human queen suddenly felt like going to a detour.

"I have a feeling that whatever is happening over there, would be something we would really want to get ourselves involved in as soon as possible," Elys said, more to herself than to Aleksander or the others.
