Chapter 173: Poisonous Flowers Reminds Me Of You
Aleksander’s voice echoed within the intricate high walls and ceilings of the Rose Palace. His wife wasn’t entirely paying attention, as Elys noted that the flowers from her side of the chambers had slowly crept into the hallways, making its way around the banisters and pillars.
"You know I really love the way this looks," she commented on the flowers that bloomed as they walked by.
"I am glad that you do," Aleksander beamed. "I handpicked that because it reminds me of you. Do you know that it is actually poisonous?"
Elys gasped sarcastically and raised a brow at him, "You think I am poisonous, husband?"
Aleksander laughed for a bit and then explained, "You are poisonous in a good way, my queen. Beautiful and exquisite, with a bit of danger to those that would dare to defy it."
Lady Azalea who was closer to the two heard of the conversation, and she couldn’t help but roll an eye. If there was something the young king inherited from his father, it was the fact that he had a way with flowery words laden with honey.
How much of it was the truth, they would never know.
The noble lady was staring at the royal couple’s backs when all of a sudden, she felt a chill run up and down her spine. She raised her eyes and stifled a gasp as Aleksander’s golden eyes were staring at her whilst the queen was preoccupied with the flowers.
Lady Azalea’s eyes shook, as she had recalled the king could actually read minds.
’Did he hear what was running inside my head?’ she thought in silence.
The lady in waiting felt a bead of sweat fall down the side of her temple. Aleksander turned his eyes away, but not without leaving a terrifying impression on the noble lady.
Lady Penelope noticed her friend’s face had turned pale, and she asked, "A-A-Are y-you alright, Zale?"
Lady Azalea’s mouth twitched, and she turned to Penelope with a forced smile.
"I am fine, Penny," she said.
Aleksander was listening in on Elys’ ladies in waiting as he wanted to ensure they were truly not plotting against them at all. If they were, at least he could be aware of it earlier and warn his wife. Thankfully, aside from their prejudice of him, the ladies seemed to be predominantly focused on the perks of siding with his queen.
He didn’t intend to threaten that one girl closest to them, but he realized too late that he already had been staring at her for too long.
Aleksander loathed being compared to his father. If anything, he wanted to disown the late king despite the fact that he was of Ardorlean blood. If not for Elys and his thirst for revenge, Aleksander wouldn’t have even wanted to covet the crown at all.
"Husband," Elys called him out.
Aleksander was suddenly jerked back into reality as Elys called his name. Her ruby eyes stared at him, a brow raised as if to ask where his head was flying off to in those short seconds that he wasn’t paying attention to her or to his surroundings.
"You need to explain more on why that flower is all over my side of the chambers, husband," she demanded.
"You need not to worry much, my queen," Aleksander let out a nervous laugh as he also added, "That flower poisons only those that want to destroy it. You are free to touch, but once the thought of wanting to pick them off enters your mind, their thorns and every part of the plant sends toxins through your skin which could kill in merely a minute."
Both of Elys’ brows raised at his explanation, a scoff coming out of her in disbelief. He didn’t even mention it to her the first time she saw the other night. What if she had plucked one of them?
"I am flabbergasted to know that you put such a dangerous plant adjacent my chambers when you said you worried of my safety all the time," Elys pointed out, "you didn’t even mention it to me."
Aleksander sheepishly cleared his throat and said, "My apologies. It went out of my mind. Anyways, I was with you last night. I wouldn’t have let you be in danger at all."
The two of them finally arrived at the bottom of the Rose Palace. Knights who were assigned in the palace held the heavy doors for the royal couple. Aleksander put on his mask, and the ladies in waiting as well donned theirs for protection.
Even as the Rose Palace and the main palace was connected through a roofed archway, the vampires didn’t want to take any chances of damaging their eyes with the bright sun above them.
As they walked out of the Rose Palace, Elys continued to talk about the flowers.
"Why would anyone want to have that as a decoration? I could see that you vampires are peculiar and every bit eccentric," Elys remarked. "But I still don’t understand why you think of me when you see it."
He grinned and winked at her, and Elys couldn’t help but laugh at how ridiculous his explanation was moments ago.
Aleksander pulled Elys closer to him and said, "Just like the flower, your sharp tongue and mind is a poison to those unsuspecting, wife. They don’t expect you to be someone great, but soon they will see that you are going to be their undoing."
Elys shook her head and dismissed the idea.
She reminded herself that sometimes she doesn’t really have to understand Aleksander. And it shouldn’t matter if she doesn’t when it was just about flowers that reminded him of her.
If he had been talking about their plans for revenge then she would have pestered him until he could explain it clearly to her.
As the royal couple arrived at the main palace, they were greeted by more knights and the two walked over towards the courts room.
The servant attending the doors straightened his posture at the sight of them and immediately announced, "The King Aleksander and Queen Elysianne has arrived!"
