Chapter 172: An Emergency
Elys then quickly produced something from her tiny waist satchel. She raised it high enough for the two to see, and then asked Henry, "Can your friend identify what this is used for?"
The old man was shocked at first that Elys knew of his ’friend’, but then thought Cordelia must have been the one to tell her. There was also the fact that Aleksander fawned on her and her powers, and there was a high chance that Aleksander himself told her of the attendant’s connections.
Henry squinted at the piece of glass in her hand, noting a bright greenish stain on what looked like a broken vial.
The old man was about to speak, but before he could even respond, the knight outside Aleksander and Elysianne’s chambers announced, "Marquis Lanz wishes to speak to his majesty!"
Aleksander clicked his tongue at the timing the Marquis arrived.
"Tell him I am busy right now," Aleksander answered.
"Your majesty," Marquis Lanz called out, "I humbly ask you to meet with the High Courts. There has been some emergency aside from the fire that they want to address."
Aleksander bit his lower lip in frustration and turned to Elys and Henry, "Keep that hidden for a while. I will answer my head secretary for a minute."
The young king stormed off towards the door, and he opened it just a crack for him to speak with his Knight Commander. Elys could make out several minutes of harsh whispers being exchanged before Aleksander suddenly stopped in his tracks.
"What do you mean by that, Marquis Lanz?" his voice turned louder.
Elys noticed there was an underlying tone of disbelief in his voice, and she pushed herself forward in curiosity.
"What is happening, Aleksander, Marquis Lanz? Are you arguing?" she asked.
Marquis Lanz’s face was grim, and his eyes slightly turned to the young queen, "No, I would never argue with his majesty, Queen Elysianne," he shook his head, "but the High Court has become restless. Rumors have spread that the Eastern Kingdom had infiltrated us!"
Elys’ ruby eyes widened with the news the Marquis brought them. She quickly turned to Henry, and then back to Marquis Lanz and Aleksander. Her husband’s brows had been furrowed deeply in between, and he had this irritated but distraught air in him with the complication of their situation.
"Marquis Lanz," Aleksander addressed the vampire.
"Yes, your majesty?" the secretary replied promptly, standing straight and attentive to Aleksander’s commands. "What can I do for you?"
"Tell the High Courts that the Queen Elysianne and I will arrive at the court rooms in five minutes," Aleksander said, "prepare them a few drinks. My personal attendant shall help you."
"Understood, your majesty," Marquis Lanz bowed down. He was about to take his first step to leave the Rose Palace when Aleksander suddenly called him back.
"And Marquis Lanz?" the young king added.
The secretary turned around and replied, "Yes, your majesty?"
"Don’t let them do as they please while my queen and I are not there yet," Aleksander said.
Marquis Lanz bowed down in acknowledgement, and then set off to scurry out and return to the court rooms to announce Aleksander’s arrival in a few minutes. The vampire took the flight of stairs as fast as the wind, and went out of the Rose Palace and scampered to the main palace.
Aleksander closed the doors and locked them once more. He turned around and Elys held his serious gaze.
"What are you thinking, husband?" Elys asked him, curious of his plans regarding the new addition of headaches they have come upon.
Aleksander reached out for Elys’ hands and squeezed them. She didn’t know what made him do it, but she assumed it could be his way of finding support. Elysianne squeezed back and the two exchanged an awkward half smile before they turned to Henry again.
"Henry, go off and help Marquis Lanz with the drinks. Make sure that the potion is distributed evenly as you have been instructed," Aleksander ordered him, "And as soon as you finish that, then go back to the manor. We need you to guard someone in the dungeons."
"As you wish, King Aleksander," the old man bowed down.
Henry did not ask more of it as he already understood the haste in his master’s voice. But before he opened the doors, Elys handed him the stained broken vial.
"Have this investigated," she told him, "I know you have connections in the underground. Cordelia told me of it."
"I will do so, your majesty," he replied.
The old man wrapped the broken vial with his handkerchief, and then tucked it inside his vest. He bowed down to them one last time before immediately going out to catch up with Marquis Lanz back to the main palace.
Elys’ other hand was still held by the vampire king, and she reached out her free hand to turn his worried face towards her.
"Don’t stress on it too much," she told him. "We will figure it out."
Aleksander couldn’t help but be worried, but Elys was comforting as she held his face softly. She smiled at him, and he promptly returned them back, genuine happiness creeping into his eyes.
Aside from Henry, Elys was the only one that ever showed faith in him.
"Shall we go now?" he asked her.
"We probably should," she replied.
The royal couple exited their shared chambers. Elys’ ladies in waiting were outside their rooms, peering over the side where the shared chambers were. The noble ladies were a bit skittish around the king, but Aleksander didn’t pay heed with them.
After all, they were his wife’s chosen ladies.
He wanted them to think that the two of them were worth their loyalty, and for that, he should give them enough leeway.
She called out to them and the ladies followed the two as they walked towards the stairs. They took their time walking down the flights of stairs inside the Rose Palace, and to dispel the worries in his head, Aleksander started to chatter.
