Chapter 163: You Are Needed Here and Now
Elys sped past manors and buildings, and in less than three minutes arrived at the center of the capital. She dismounted from her horse, but then a debris from a burning roof fell down beside her.
Fire raged about the place, and immediately her trauma from the time her kingdom had been attacked turned her cold.
There were people screaming for help, yet Elys was shaking in one place. Although she wanted to help, Elys was frozen with distress. The wails of her people and that of the humans in the capital played simultaneously in her head, making her upset even more.
"Elysianne!"
Elys jolted as she turned to see Aleksander dismounting from his horse as well. He rushed over to her, hovering over her and looking for any telltale signs of injury.
The vampire lifted his hands over to Elys’ face, pressing her cheeks in between his large hands. His eyes locked in on her, but Elys looked like she was out of herself, her pupils dilated and shaking.
"Are you hurt?" Aleksander asked her.
"No," Elys mechanically replied.
Aleksander immediately recalled how Elys had told him the story of how her kingdom had ended in the hands of the vampires.
’Is she reliving through her nightmares around this pandemonium?’ the young king asked himself.
Aleksander shook Elys hard, "Elysianne, get yourself together! People need your help!"
Elys’ head bobbed like a plaything, but then recognition started to wash over her and her eyes turned to Aleksander’s.
"Husband," she spoke, her voice a bit shaky.
"I am here, Elysianne," he said as his hand lowered to her arms, his grip tightening. "Don’t think of the past. The future is ahead of you, and the present demands you to focus on here and now."
Elys squared her shoulders and straightened her back, determination bringing back life to her pale face.
"Let’s save my people," Elys said with an unwavering look in her eyes.
"Yes, let’s save our people, my queen," Aleksander nodded in agreement.
The two stood side by side, taking a look at the disaster that continued to rage around them. The knights have dispersed as previously instructed by Aleksander, trying to find any soul who was trapped or possibly passed out from the heat and smoke.
It was still too early in the morning, and yet this kind of trouble has already set in on the Western Kingdom.
Aleksander bit the inside of his cheeks and scowled. He couldn’t get Sir Noa out of his mind, and he was determined to find any evidence that could point to the Eastern Kingdom’s part in this attack.
Cordelia was not back from tailing the Eastern foreigner, and Aleksander could only assume that either Cordelia was discovered or she was already on her way to return and report her findings.
However, at the moment, Aleksander had no idea what was really the deal. He could only assume as much.
"Help! My foot is stuck!" a weak voice called out from their far left side.
Aleksander was too immersed in his thoughts that for the short seconds that the tiny voice called out for help, only Elys was able to hear. The young queen did not wait for her husband, and immediately rushed over towards what looked like a pile of wooden boards.
"H-Help! It hurts!" a voice called out, and Elys craned her neck to the left to see a little girl – barely in her teens – had been stuck underneath.
Her foot had been stuck under the piles of wood, possibly after the explosion had happened and the blast caused a wave of energy toppling things down on its path.
It was a good thing that the wooden boards were not burning, as that would be another problem if it had been. The girl wouldn’t just sustain bruises and possible bone fractures, but that also of burns.
"Don’t be afraid," Elys said, "I will help you out."
Aleksander was about to rush over to help Elys with lifting the piles of wooden boards, but to his astonishment, Elys yanked one board after another with much ease that she looked as if she was merely throwing away bones for the dogs.
One last huge wooden board was left, and Elys bent down to pick it up with both hands. She didn’t even need Aleksander’s help, as in mere seconds she was able to get the girl out to safety.
"Can you walk?" Elys asked the girl as she lifted her up.
The little girl shook her head, tears flowing like a raging river from her eyes. Snot was dripping on one hole of her nose, and she sniffed as she wiped her face with the back of her hand.
"Princess... thank you for saving me!" the child bawled.
’Princess?’ Elys was confused why the child called her that when she and Aleksander had already taken the throne.
She was already Queen of the Western Kingdom, no longer a princess but that of a king’s other half.
Upon closer inspection, Elys noted the girl had fairly white hair, and her eyes were pale blues that resembled a part of the Northern Kingdom’s population.
’She is one of my people!’ she thought.
Soot marked her cheeks, and Elys didn’t wait any longer for the girl to reply to her. The young queen lifted the girl in her arms, and then rushed over one of the knights.
"Get her to a safe spot, gather vampires that have affinities to contain or stop a fire," she instructed.
The knight nodded and mounted the girl on his horse. There were other people on his horse already, mostly humans as Elys assumed by the look of their faces and their dresses.
’Slaves...’ she thought with all the loathing she could muster. ’I swear that I will put an end to this system, and bring liberation to my people.’
A rumble erupted from above them, and Elys turned to look up and see a piece of a huge sign board toppling down them with the pull of gravity.
