Chapter 160: Are You Trying To Be Stupid?
"Would you give me a hug too so I can sleep well?"
Aleksander’s words ringed in Elys’ ears for a few seconds before it finally sunk into her what exactly he had asked for. A hug? Why would she even hug him?
Holding hands in front of the public to pretend they were a happy couple was one thing, but hugging him in private was entirely another thing.
"Are you trying to be stupid, husband?" Elys asked him, internally trying not to show her embarrassment.
"I don’t need to try, my queen. If I want to be stupid, it would be effortless," the vampire replied, a cocky grin plastered on his face.
Elys scoffed, her hand pressed to her chest as she regarded Aleksander and how unbelievable he was being right now. The young queen was utterly out for words with the sudden change in her husband’s demeanor.
The vampire leaned to his side, propped his elbow perpendicular to his body and leaned his head on his palm. He had a droopy look to his eyes, the early signs of drowsiness settling in his face.
"I am still waiting for that hug, you know," he said as another yawn got him, "quickly now, my queen. What if I have trouble sleeping? You would leave me no choice to have you accountable for that afterwards."
Elys crossed her arms and snorted, defiant not to give in to his absurd request, "Not in a million years, vampire."
The human stomped her foot away from the bed, making her way towards the sofa where Aleksander had previously occupied before he sat next to her by the bed.
"Aw... I really thought it was going to be a fair bargain with you, Elys," Aleksander continued to tease her. "Are you sure you won’t change your mind regarding that hug?"
As Elys sat down, she grabbed for something that was lying still on the sofa. With a swift movement, the warrior royal from the North threw a pillow towards Aleksander.
If not for the canopies of the bed, she would have hit her husband square on the face.
"Such a violent wife you are," Aleksander pouted, "I was only asking. It wasn’t as if I forced you, unlike what you did to me when you were asleep."
"Shut up, Aleksander and sleep already!" Elys grumbled.
Her eyebrows were practically merged together as Elys’ scowl deepened the longer Aleksander stayed awake. He was yawning one after another, and although Elys had awakened refreshed, she couldn’t help but feel affected with his continuous yawning.
She had been trying to hold it in since Aleksander’s first yawn, but this was probably the fifth time he yawned and Elys couldn’t help it any longer. Her mouth reflexively opened wide, a circle shape forming with her lips as the young queen yawned too.
"Pfft..."
Elys’ eyes turned to her husband, and she saw him stifling a giggle. Her cheeks suddenly turned hot with embarrassment, and Elys quickly covered her mouth to stop herself from yawning again.
’Wait,’ she thought at the back of her mind, ’Was Aleksander doing that on purpose to get a laugh at me?’
The young queen turned her head gradually, her eyes locking in on Aleksander’s figure through the sheer fabric of the inner canopies.
The light outside was slowly easing in the room, and Aleksander pulled a blanket over his legs to protect them. His hand lifted to shield his eyes from the ray of sun which had seemingly targeted his face. It made him wince at the disturbing and disorienting source of light to his extremely sensitive eyes.
Elys heaved an exasperated sigh, and stood up from her seat.
Aleksander was quick to notice this, and then he asked, "Where are you going? Are you leaving our shared chambers?"
His wife shook her head and then walked over towards the bed, "No, you light-allergic idiot. I am here to stay – despite how incorrigible you get. We had a deal, and I am pushing through with my plans for my people."
The young king let out a small laugh and said, "Quite impressive, my queen. I am sure that you will be successful in that."
"As long as you keep your part, my king," Elys responded.
She drew the thicker layers of the bed canopies. Rays of sunlight were already slowly seeping in their room, and Aleksander had to be shielded from it or else he’d be complaining about how his eyes hurt.
Elys untied the ribbon around the fabric, let it loose, and then pulled it the heavy and dark fabric to close it fully.
"Thank you, Elys," Aleksander whispered from inside his little dark enclosure.
"Don’t get too happy with this," Elys merely replied with a cold tone.
As she was about to turn around and walk back to the sofa, she heard Aleksander say, "Wife..."
Elys turned her torso halfway and listened in, "What is it now?"
"If ever you want to talk to me about something that is bothering you, just about anything. Your worries, your sorrows, your joy, your fears," he started to enumerate, and then quickly added, "Please don’t hesitate to talk to me. I would love to hear what you think of everytime."
Aleksander waited, but Elys was silent for a long time.
She didn’t reply to her husband’s words, and in turn the young king worried if she took him seriously with his offer to be a listening ear.
He did expect her to turn him down, knowing she valued her privacy and the fact that she wouldn’t speak with him anything about her past as well gave Aleksander the impression that she wasn’t entirely ready to open up with him.
But it goes to say that he did hope Elysianne would one day find him to be someone she could fully trust. Because truthfully speaking, Aleksander’s only goal at the moment was to give her what she wanted.
The only catch was that he needed to get a hold of the whole kingdom first.
Just as Aleksander had closed his eyes, all of a sudden, a loud explosion erupted outside.
