Chapter 158: Merely Three Minutes?!
Chapter 158: Merely Three Minutes?!
The human queen woke up to a familiar scent invading her nose. She doesn’t particularly use blankets, and the weather was just right last night which meant she slept without it. But then why does she feel like something was not quite the way it was?
’Wait... something feels heavy,’ she thought, the grogginess from her sleep still not fully gotten rid of.
Elys opened her eyes, and they almost burst out of their sockets when she saw Aleksander’s face.
The lamps flickered and shadows played along the young king’s face. Elys looked out to the open balcony, and her face turned into a scowl. He seemed to have fallen asleep despite the fact that it was just over an hour till sunrise.
His hand was outstretched from the edge of the bed, and Elys’ eyes traced the end and was all the more shocked by what she saw – he was holding her hand?!
So that was what felt heavy for her a while ago...
The young queen yanked her hand out of Aleksander’s grip, and the vampire instantly awoke with an ungraceful snort.
Their eyes locked on the second Aleksander turned his attention to Elys’ face. His jaw tensed at the expression she made, and he knew he made a big mistake.
"Fuck, my eyes fell asleep," he whispered under his breath.
"I thought you don’t sleep until an hour after sunrise?" Elys asked, her tone a bit mocking with a hint of morning sour attitude.
"My bad, let me see the time," he said as he fished out an old pocket watch from his vest, "ah..." he sighed with relief, "it was merely three minutes then."
Aleksander’s nonchalance made Elys’ blood boil.
"Merely three minutes?!" she yelled, "you fell asleep knowing the balcony was wide open. Have you got a death wish for being a sloppy for merely three minutes?"
Elys’ head was fuming. It was a miracle that they brushed off those three minutes of peaceful sleep without getting any assassination attempts.
Aleksander’s hand reached out for Elys, but the Western Queen hissed at him even before he could touch an inch of her skin.
"Don’t even think about touching me," she said as she jerked her hand further away from him. She scooted a bit to the opposite end, her eyes burning with fury at Aleksander’s error.
"Elys... let me - " Aleksander spoke but was cut off.
"You said you would protect me if I was with you," Elys said, recalling her husband’s words just as how he used it to convince her to rest where he can see to her safety. "It seems like that was just a lie then, huh? You just wanted to stare at me asleep and even hold my hand without my consent!"
Aleksander rubbed his palms together, a bead of sweat forming at the side of his right temple. He wanted to retort to Elys’ questions but she just kept on talking and it seemed like she would get even madder if he would speak out.
She did seem to demand an answer from him, but by the time the vampire was going to give his reply, Elys would go on to scream his ear off with how angry she was he fell asleep – for three minutes.
Well, it was true that three minutes was more than enough for an assassin to get rid of his target – especially if they were asleep at that – but Aleksander knew that there was bound to be no one who could enter their shared bedchambers except that two of them.
That was how the room was made – enchanted that only the king and queen were able to enter at will.
Aleksander’s eyes were cast down, knowing all too well that he had ought to have explained to Elys beforehand one of the reasons he insisted they slept in the shared bedchambers.
He gave her a quick glance, but Elys still continued to babble on about his mistakes and all his empty promises for her safety. It took her about a full ten minutes to start getting tired, and Aleksander almost celebrated as he could finally speak up.
Unfortunately for him, Elys grabbed a glass of water placed at the bedside table and gulped it in one go. After quenching her thirst and hydrating herself, she then went on to add another full five minutes of what seemed like an endless list of Aleksander’s mistakes.
’This is not going well for me,’ Aleksander grumbled in silence.
If he had been his past self – rude and proud – he wouldn’t have let Elys get her way with the fifteen minutes of howling his ears off.
But Aleksander was determined to change his bad habits and it showed with how he controlled himself from immediately lashing out to his wife when she started to yell.
"Aleksander!" Elys called out to him.
"Yes, are you done now?" he asked her.
Elys was puffing with madness, and it wasn’t even sunrise yet. Aleksander heaved a sigh and his silver eyes turned soft, making sure that he was conveying to her his intentions correctly.
His queen’s eyes slowly turned to look at her husband while she crossed her arms as she silently acknowledged his words. Aleksander tilted his head, amused but controlling his emotions not to spill or else he might infuriate her more.
His wife on the other hand, was doing her best not to burst out any further. Her father had reminded her in her dreams regarding her emotions, and this was not her best at that.
Her eyes turned to her husband, and she noted how he sat perfectly calm in his seat.
"Are you done now, wife? Can I speak my part now?" he asked.
The young queen clenched her fists to the side and made a sound, "Hmph!"
Aleksander almost laughed, but caught himself midway and thankfully stopped himself before causing another fifteen minutes of hounding.
"I will take that as a yes," Aleksander calmly said. "Very well then, to set things straight regarding our safety..."
