Chapter 147: Compensation

Chapter 147: Compensation

All of the vampires inside the throne room turned their heads towards the young man that entered unceremoniously. He raised brows of incredulity, while others had their mouths lifted in a curious smirk.

Who was he and why did the bastard king seem to have been shocked by his appearance?

Sir Noa... not many were those that knew his identity. Who he was and what he does, where he came from and why he had tried to get an audience with the vampire king in the very last minute.

Elysianne gave Sir Noa a once-over, trying to gauge his stand and his general appearance. He did not seem to have brought anything aside from himself. Not a bag or a document – Sir Noa just brought himself.

She reached out to tug her husband’s hand and mouthed, ’Calm down. Get everyone out.’

"Everybody, out right now!" Aleksander immediately ordered.

The nobilities of the High Court were intrigued by what seemed like fluster in Aleksander’s eyes. They slowly filed out of the throne room, and even Henry and Cordelia were ordered out.

The only ones left inside the throne room right then were the king, his queen, and the mysterious guest who sought Aleksander’s audience.

By the time the doors were closed with an ominous thud, Sir Noa turned his full attention towards the royal couple sitting regally in their thrones.

"I never thought that the two of you would be the ones sitting there as I visited the Western Kingdom today," Sir Noa noted, amusement twinkling in his eyes.

Elys noted the words he had said. So, the Eastern Kingdom had not heard news of King Raxus and Queen Zephyrine’s untimely and mysterious deaths?

That was kind of new to hear.

She knew the Eastern Kingdom was secluded from the rest of the kingdoms, but she had thought that usually deaths of monarchs were one of the fastest news that should reach another kingdom’s ears – even those that closed themselves off from the rest of the continent.

"Did you come alone? Or have you brought with you your pack of werewolves?" Aleksander asked immediately. "Let’s cut to the chase and tell us what you really came here for."

Sir Noa chuckled at Aleksander’s response to his small talks.

"Keep it down, your majesty," the Eastern man said, a lop-sided grin plastered to his face. "I do not seek violence, as it is not a part of the Eastern Kingdom’s culture like that of the West. We are much better than that."

Aleksander’s forehead creased and his brows knitted together with apprehension.

Sir Noa would never come into enemy territories without planning it out meticulously. He was the trusted adviser of the young Queen Euphemia, and they all know he was formidable in his own way to have taken such a job in his age.

"Then what is your purpose in the Western Kingdom, Sir Noa?" Elys spoke up this time around.

The man turned to the Western Queen and made a curt bow at her, "Greetings, your majesty. It has been almost been two full moons since you have escaped from the Eastern territories, and that of your responsibility from the havoc your kingdom left in ours."

Aleksander and Elys could not help but wince at the mention of the failed invasion of Prince Dominick.

The young king knew he had done a great part into the disaster, but in his haste to take advantage of his father and half brother’s passing, it had totally escaped from his mind.

He wasn’t able to think of diplomatic issues the Western Kingdom had with the rest of the continent, and had just focused on what was inside of his own kingdom.

Aleksander did note that the Eastern Kingdom returned Dominick’s head as a warning, but that was about it. He did not think more than to communicate with the kingdom his father and brother had tried to take for their own.

"Then why do you seek audience with his majesty, Sir Noa?" Elys asked him.

The man smiled and said, "Queen Euphemia had sent me to negotiate the Western Kingdom’s compensation for the dead and damages it had caused the Eastern Kingdom."

Elys’ nails dug into her throne’s soft armrest.

She had expected the Eastern Queen to demand for something like that sooner or later, but Elys was not the kind of royalty to give in so easily. It was another thing to try and keep the balance within one’s own kingdom, and a whole other thing when you consider the neighboring kingdoms as well.

"I must say that I am much amazed that you were able to pose yourself looking like a Western citizen," Elys scoffed, "I don’t think you had those clothes with you in the East or had you bought that from someone when you entered the Western territories?"

"It does not matter anymore where I got my article of clothing, your majesty," Sir Noa said.

"Well, if you do say so," Elys grunted. "I see that you did not send us a letter in advance to inform us of your arrival. Was this something you planned or had it been on a whim?"

Sir Noa squared his shoulders and straightened his back. His eyes were looking at Elys, but he was also being wary of her husband’s movements beside her.

"We had been very busy with the death of Alpha Iyoha, the passing of innocents at the hands of his majesty, the repairs of the Jade and Crystal Palace, as well as reinforcements of our walls," he admitted.

Elys’ eyes squinted as she weighed in the things Sir Noa had spoken about

He mentioned that Queen Euphemia had wanted compensation from the West to the East. Was she trying to ask for money? Gold?

The Eastern Kingdom was wealthy enough already to renovate the damages from Prince Dominick and his men’s attacks. There must be something that was not being explicitly said here.

"Sir Noa, I am confused with what you want from us," Elys asked, "Do you demand for what kind of compensation exactly?"

The Eastern citizen chuckled and turned to the young vampire king. Their eyes met as Sir Noa’s gaze bore into Aleksander’s.

The vampire did not like what Sir Noa was doing. He scowled as he got irritated with the prolonged stare, and Aleksander turned impatient.

The vampire focused on Sir Noa’s mind. He assumed that if he could pry into the thoughts of the Eastern adviser to the Queen Euphemia, then he was going to understand what he and Elys were about to get.

Was he trouble? Or was he trying to tie loose ends peacefully like what his kingdom promotes?

Aleksander concentrated, his brows furrowing further in the middle. Creases formed on his forehead, and his eyes turned into menacing slits.

He envisioned himself swimming through an ocean of thoughts. Eventually, Aleksander was able to get a hold of Sir Noa’s mind.

It was like being outside someone else’s home. Knocking was not the ideal way to enter though, as reading minds most of the time entailed stepping into private and holy places.

He slipped through the subconscious.

Aleksander picked a thought one by one, his finger twitching in his armrest as the split second he tried to read Sir Noa’s mind passed them by so quickly.

Suddenly, the young king stiffened in his chair, a look of surprise washing over his face. His hands gripped the armrest so tightly and with much force that it had cracked with just little pressure he used.

"I am not going to travel to the Eastern Kingdom to stand trial, Sir Noa," the vampire king stomped his foot to emphasize himself to Sir Noa, "It is not possible now that I have turned a new leaf, and a whole kingdom to manage."

The Eastern adviser’s eyes widened. He did not expect the young king to have guessed the mission he had been tasked with.

Sir Noa was only able to see the bastard fight when he was under the spell of his own father’s words. He knew that vampires were inherently gifted with magic, but he had not thought of the fact that King Aleksander could read minds.

He stood straight where he was standing and procured what looked like a tiny piece of browning paper from under his front vest.

Intrigued by the tiny piece of paper, Elys stood up from her seat and walked down to face Sir Noa. He bowed his head and handed over the letter towards Elys.

Recalling how Queen Euphemia had rejected their scrolls for precaution back then, Elys did the same with Sir Noa and held back her hand and said, "You open and read it yourself."

The Eastern adviser of Queen Euphemia smiled as he took the envelope back and inserted it into his front vest pocket.

"You are not going to read to us what was written in there?" Elys asked him. "You are being really suspicious here right now, don’t you think so?"

Sir Noa shook his head and said, "Is it not ironic how you have trust issues when you yourself had tried to take advantage of the Eastern Kingdom’s innocence?"

"I think it is quite ironic, but I don’t really care," Elys lied.
