Chapter 292 - True Reason
Chapter 292: Chapter 292 - True Reason
Eric stood by the side, looking out the window at the unfamiliar forest with a glum look on his face. These past few days had been a roller coaster for him. To be killed and arrested by his lover was the worst feeling ever. And to top it all, these people wanted to destroy his soul completely.
’What a shitty world...’ he drew a crane on the hazy window.
"Dinner is ready." Kai came up behind him with a bag of bread. "He didn’t leave much of a choice here. It was either cold bread or that..." he pointed to something that looked like a spiky plant.
"I’m not hungry," Eric whispered, looking away. He couldn’t bear to look at his face, mainly because Kai betrayed him and partly because Kai looked similar to his lover. His heart still held an inkling of love towards that familiar face.
"Eric... you have to eat."
"I don’t think I have to," Eric whispered softly. He had been stuck as a system for as long as he could remember. He had gotten hungry, but he had been fine without sustenance. Nothing changed even after he went through two worlds. His body did not require food.
"No, your body is made up of spiritual energy. Food in this world has a trace amount of spiritual energy, and it can really strengthen you." Kai moved closer. "Please... eat."
"I’m tired." He walked away before Kai could say another word.
Sadly, this place only had one guest bedroom. Even if he stormed out of there pouting, he still had to face that annoying person at night.
’Should I sleep on the ground?’ He gazed at the carpeted ground, highly tempted by the option.
"I’ll crash on the couch," Kai whispered by the doorway. "Rest well." Saying so, the man closed the door after him.
Eric gazed at the closed door with a sigh. When he was a system, he never had to deal with such complicated feelings. ’Being a human is tough... I should have just stayed a system all my life. Maybe then I could have avoided this heartbreak.’
He jumped onto the soft bed, burrowing himself into the warm sheets.
Before he could know it, he was out like a light. All that stress from the escape and staying in that prison cell made him sleepless and exhausted beyond anything. A soft bed was all he needed.
"Eric..." a soft voice called to him.
Eric turned over, hugging the blanket tightly.
"Eric..." Someone nudged him softly on his shoulder.
He cracked open one eye and gazed up.
Kai stood by his bed with a disheveled look. "Breakfast... you need to eat."
Eric closed his eyes again. Seeing that face first thing in the morning really made it hard for him. His heart clenched at that sight. He really wanted to wail. But no tears escaped his eyes.
"Please... your energy is low. You need your strength."
Suddenly, his blanket was yanked away.
The man named Mark stood by Kai with a frown. "Stop sulking and come out. We have things to discuss."
Groaning, Eric sat up.
"Princess is awake, Mister Romeo. Let’s give him some space to clean up," the man pulled Kai out of the room.
’Clean up...’ Eric frowned, touching his face. Unknown to him, he had drooled in his sleep, leaving behind a huge trail by his mouth. ’Fuck, so embarrassing...’
He rushed to the bathroom and cleaned himself up.
As soon as he walked out, he was greeted by Mark standing by the door. "Breakfast is getting cold, and little princess is taking a long time," he rushed him out into the dining room.
Kai was seen sitting at the head of the table. He cast a small glance at him as soon as he entered the room but soon pretended to look at the food. It was quite obvious that this man was trying to give him some space.
Even so, Eric felt a strange sense of rage at this sight.
Grunting, he sat at the seat farthest away from Kai. "I do not need food to live. You guys don’t have to force me to eat."
"We eat to live." Mark pushed a bowl of soup-like thing towards him. It had strange glowy bits floating around. "Okay, if you guys are trying to poison me, you have to do a better job at hiding it."
"Oh, princess, that is for your nourishment. It has spiritual energy. It makes you... well, more human."
"I am human," Eric growled at him.
"I know, but you are half the human you used to be. Well, you can tear up or excrete, right?"
Eric blushed. "S-shut it."
"So you eat to excrete."
"Oh god..." Grimacing, he put a spoonful of that strange soup in his mouth. It had a slightly salty and garlicky taste. Honestly, it was not bad.
Unbeknownst to him, he had chowed down on an entire bowl in just minutes.
Eric burped loudly, gazing at his empty bowl. He felt a strange rush of energy through his body. Before this meal, he had always felt like his body was floating around. But now it felt more grounded. More... strong.
’Kai was right... but I’m not going to admit it to him at all...’
"Elana was spotted a few miles away," Mark added, filling in the silence.
Eric froze. "Do we have to run again?"
"Yes, I guess... I’ve never seen the agency that resolute to capture someone. What did you do, princess?" Mark playfully nudged him.
"I have a name. And I didn’t do anything..." Well, he did run for his life into two worlds and might have altered some of its content. But they weren’t trying to kill him just for that, right?
Kai cleared his throat. "The agency has always had an interest in Eric. That’s why they had me sent to the worlds to capture him. But an accident happened, and I forgot all about my identity in those worlds..." His piercing eyes fell on him intensely. "What I’m trying to say is, feelings were real. What we had was real."
"I don’t want to talk about this now!" Eric snapped back. "Mark, you were saying how Elana is so set on capturing me. Let’s continue with that."
"No, no, I’m curious. Why did the agency send you?" Mark curiously gazed at Kai.
"They found something wrong with his soul sequencing. He was too powerful that he still held a consciousness even in that pit he was in. I guess that is what captured their interest."
Mark frowned deeply, tapping on the table rhythmically. "The agency never does that... Sending you was okay. But sending Elana to completely wipe his memories... something is fishy."
"You’re saying he knows something, and they want to destroy him," Kai shot up.
Eric just looked at him wide-eyed. "I don’t know anything. Hell, I found out my name was Eric just a few days ago."
Mark nodded softly. "But that was because you were in the pit. They had already erased you. The memory you had before you were wiped is what they are after."
